Fun fact if you cast heal (the spell of that name) on your dark urge after finding out you are a bhalspawn you regain some memories of your childhood, that you lived in the city and had adoptive parents, friends, a life before the Urge appeared and washed away who you were, making it possible for you to have been a paladin before your blood corrupted you

I love how they not only included the Oathbreaker, but they didn't stick to a generic "I broke my oath because I'm EVIL" story. No, they broke their Oath because they realized they swore an Oath to someone cruel and undeserving...but they still BROKE their OATH. But further, The Oathbreaker knows what MAKES a Paladin, and so can reassure you that whatever good deeds or cruel you've done as a Bhaalspawn, it isn't all you are.

I fully beleive if they ever include future oaths in the patches, we get acess to the Crown Oath. Mainly cause I think that was the Oathbreaker's original Oath... you make an Oath to a King/Council/City/Law, wich means you may be forced to do some messed up shit to maintain it depending on the law/kings order.

@@stellabjerkered2375 maybe you could swear an oath to balduran and break it by going against the emperor's wishes, like going to the house of hope. maybe even by going through the creche or trying to kill the dream visitor, but that would kinda spoil the whole plot twist of act 3 in act 1, although the dream visitor could say that they were "very close" to balduran or something if you do that and that's why your oath was broken. or swear an oath to a specific ruler of a certain race's home city, i.e. elturel and break it by killing any members of that race that aren't hostile to you by default. being a crown paladin of balduran could maybe give you a lot of interesting dialogue choices in act 3, and dialogue options with florick and the flaming fist, and being a paladin of another city could give you dialogue options with specific races, i.e. a crown paladin of elturel could have some more dialogue with zevlor and the tieflings. could be interesting. paladin and bard are already kinda established to be the "main character" classes by courtesy of getting a lot of dialogue options and special interactions, so it wouldn't be too far-fetched to have a paladin oath directly connected to the game's plot either.

I love it so so so much. I love how they made Oathbreaker a class with nuanced lore instead of basic "MUAHAHAH IM EVIL NOW" lore. I honestly always loved the aesthetics of Oathbreaker, but I never vibed with the "Paladins who seek power and to do evil" because it is a very simple reason and I always thought a paladin can break their Oath for very good reasons; like a paladin can falter in their convictions, and not for selfish evil reasons either, or even do acts of good that go against the tenants of their Oath. Oathbreaker in BG3 heavily reminds me of Dark Knights in FFXIV, we even have an NPC similar to the Oathbreaker Knight and I wouldn't be surprised if they got inspired by this to adjust the lore.

My theory: the paladin oaths are vague, nonsensical and easy to break on purpose. Whoever is responsible for them needs money to keep the whole paladin infrastructure going. Fun fact: The “Oathbreaker” Paladin in BG3 is actually the Dark Knight Paladin from original D&D lore/game play. While most Paladin mains prefer the Holy Knight version that traditionally runs a good play style, the Dark Knight/Oathbreaker is for those who want an evil play style. The only thing I wish BG3 incorporated was the ability to play as a Shadow Druid.

My Dark Urge was a Wild Magic Sorcerer, but I multi-classed as an Oath of Vengeance Paladin in Act 3. I almost immediately broke my oath by helping Astarion sacrifice 7,000 people to become a Vampire Ascendent. Not my finest move, but I killed Isobel to unlock the Slayer Form, and convinced Shadowheart to kill Dame Aylin to become a Dark Justiciar, so an Oathbreaker Paladin suited my Dark Urge quite nicely. With the Gloves of Dexterity and the Finesse weapon you get for killing the Hag in Act 3, I was havin a blast making my father proud.

IMO starting as Oath of Ancients or Oath of Devotion is kind of a stretch for Durge. Oath of Vengeance sort of works since your first thought upon waking up is that you're going to claw your way out of the nautiloid and punish whoever took your memories. They would probably have been something like Oath of Conquest pre-tadpole, but that's not a choice in the game.

it's never explicitly stated that durge was a murder-hobo during the events that led up to their capture, so it's possible that paladin durge decided to turn against bhaal shortly before they were betrayed, since it's already established that even pure bhaalspawn can turn against bhaal with enough willpower, which durge would've presumably had since they're repeatedly described as being far more "controlled" than orin. maybe they even swore their oath while captured, which would make a lot of sense for the oath of vengeance. in 5e and BG3 by extension paladins don't get their powers from any deity even if most of them follow one, they get them solely from their oath, so it's honestly more reasonable for durge to be a paladin than a cleric as the barrier of entry is just "swear that you'll serve your oath", unless you argue that they turned to the gods when betrayed considering that bhaal has forsaken them and whichever god is chosen would've gladly answered their prayers to take such a loyal servant away from bhaal.

It didn't, it's pretty canon that Durge broke their Oath by murdering their entire paladin order if they are a paladin. I think, however, what could have happened is that once you awoke in the Nautilod you had no memories of your past life, and that very personality you had before being corrupted as the Temple of Bhaal's leader (not when your first urges appear, because Bhaalspawn can still be good and have good morals) reemerges, so that's why you have your Oath again; because you forgot what made you cruel. However, my honest opinion is that this makes no sense because a Paladin's Oath is so engraved in a person's soul that even after losing your memories you would still be an Oathbreaker. But probably they decided to make it this way to not give you spoilers (If you are an Oathbreaker it kind of shows you were not a very good person before or something corrupted you), because Oathbreaker is harder to play and mostly in the Shadow-Cursed Lands (Aura of Hate gives more damage to you and undead), and because of technical issues (how would the Oathbreaker Knight introduce himself if you have already broken your Oath, etc.)
