OASIS: The Ultimate Comedown Album
Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants is Oasis' fourth album, and one of their most unique and underrated. Join me to learn the story of how the album was made by a songwriter and a band in crisis.

Roll It Over is arguably the best, most overlooked, rarely talked about Oasis songs. It’s so so good, I can’t believe it never gets discussed when people talk about Oasis “underrated” songs.

Great tune
Liam would probably never admit it, but Noel leaving in 2009 was probably the best thing that happened to him. Because Liam no longer had the protection of his big brother. He had to do all the press tours, interviews, award shows, etc by himself. Back then Noel used to do all these and Liam just partied around. And Liam himself admitted that he became much more disciplined during his solo career than he ever was in Oasis. He knows if he does not show up to a gig now, Noel is not there to rescue him.
That interview with Noel on the balcony in Japan is by far the most interesting he's ever given.

@@gomezthechimp1116I was about to say, Not the live version! I saw them May 1 2000 (day May be wrong) at Radio City Music Hall in NYC and it changed my whole view of “Gas Panic”. Liam belted it out like only he can and it was (as they say) biblical. That show is one I’ll never forget - especially cause it’s right here on YT 😁
SotSoG is an album that sounds much better today than it did on release. One of the problems was that every time Oasis released an album post Be Here Now everybody just wanted another Definitely Maybe or What's the story and people just weren't ready for a new sound. Oasis had so many good songs during their second phase but get overlooked because they wasnt as meaningful as the 90s. Noel got older and became a different kind of songwriter and is showing even more in his solo work how versatile he is.

Been on another Oasis mood lately so this was very welcome. Go Let It Out is one of their best ever songs imo.
18:33 "I had my rock and roll phase, I'd my drug phase, my women phase...this is a calm phase." It's like describing Oasis's first four albums.
I've always had a soft spot for this album. It came out when I was just entering my teens, so I remember the singles being all over the radio and it takes me back to happier times. The formula definitely needed updating after BHN and, at the time, I thought this album had a current sound that slotted in with what else was going on in UK music at the time. It had a drum sound that gave it some of the drum and bass/garage flavour that was exploding in the UK at the time. I still think Go Let It Out is one of their best singles and is often overlooked when discussing their all time classics.
The Gas Panic performance on Jools Holland was outstanding.
SOTSOG is by far the most mature Oasis album. It’s also incredibly experimental in comparison to the previous 3 albums. Absolutely mega album

It was a bit of a mess though. Like James said, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and I Can See A Liar should have been dropped for Carry Us All, Lets All Make Believe and One Way Road. I would have also dropped Little James and finally Noel would have sung Gas Panic! instad of Liam.
As a Canadian, I find _Standing on the Shoulder of Giants_ to be more significant than people might realize for two reasons: "Go Let It Out" became Oasis's first chart-topping hit here, and "Put Yer Money Where Yer Mouth Is" became the opening song of the hit television show _Dragons' Den_ several years after the album's release. While I never hear "Go Let It Out" or Oasis's other Canadian chart-topper "The Hindu Times" on Canadian radio stations anymore, I have to wonder if Oasis would've had the lasting popularity here that they've had without _Giants_ to solidify their legacy.
This was Noel’s strongest songwriting period when it came to poignancy. Even the B-Sides like ‘Let’s all make believe’, ‘One Way Road’ and ‘Cigarettes in Hell’ and as for Roll it over, it has one of the most beautiful, sad and haunting endings ever. Pink Floyd vibes but with that Oasis twist.

Best song in that period was a b-side called `Lets all make believe' How did that not make the album?
Who feels love is my favorite Oasis song! Super tune very good live as well

Absolutely incredible video man, thank you for putting your time into this
Thanks, James. I've been listening to 'Standing...' quite a lot recently off the back of watching your videos, and it's great to see you give this album one of your deep dives.
Fascinating video once again, James. Spent many a Saturday and Sunday morning coming down listening to this album. Good times
Great video once again! I love sotsog album, the singles and the whole era. 👌
I remember my local record store in the states, had a release at midnight. Not sure why? , but I stood in line with a bunch of people and bought the CD . Went to the liquor store bought some beer and went home. I listened to the album over and over... what a great memory! One of my favorite albums
Sunday Morning Call and Roll It Over are my favorites. Thank you for the video bro! 👏🏻
Brilliant vid as always! It's in the top three Oasis albums for me, you really do get the sense when listening that it's the end of the 'living large' era of the band and the start of something new and 'mature'.
Fantastic video James!! Great breakdown of that part of the Oasis story!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Always enjoy how much effort and thought and research you put into these!
such a great job!! thanks!! I really enjoy every video you do
Another great video James - thanks for sharing. Sunday Morning Call is one of my favourite Oasis songs - used to cover it with my band when it first came out 😀
Great video. Love this album. Hopefully we will see your reviews or history of everything else going forward. The later Oasis albums, Beadyeye, and of course Noel and Liam with their solo albums.
Another stunning video James !!!
This is great James - its a brilliant album overall. Some absolute classics on it!
Thanks James, it never gets old when you talk about oasis
SOTSOG is their best '00 album. Glad to see you dedicated a video to it. It was the first Oasis album I heard and since there I'm aboard on the Gallaghers boat
Thanks James! You're doing a brilliant job X
Great video James! I was lucky enough to see Oasis live quite a few times and I can tell you, the whole vibe changed from the 90s to 2000s. The shift felt deeper than just a change in band members or musical style. At the time, I thought it was because I went from being a starry-eyed kid in the 90s to a young adult in the 00s. Turns out the band was going through a metamorphosis. Interesting stuff. BTW, Let's All Make Believe should have been an album track!
Will never understand the hate for little James! Ones of my favourites from this album, unbelievable instrumental and great vocals, brilliant start for liams songwriting too

This album is actually one of my top 5 Oasis albums, involving the Masterplan compilation. There's a lot of very underappreciated gems on here and I am one of the fans who loves Little James, yet it was a light and bubbly sweet one while most of the album was dark and as personally deep for Noel. I do love the album but I don't think Sunday Morning Call is one of my favourites. It would've been a stronger album if Let's All Make Believe could've been added on the original tracklisting. Awesome video James.

Hats off to you, sir. As a bloke in my mid 'ish' 40's, I thought I knew about Oasis. Your videos are ace mate.
I vividly remember when this album came out. I remember thinking... What has happened? Some tunes were ok. Some others were merely average b sides. But the oasis sound, the full on guitars, the arrogance, the passion was gone. It was quite depressing at the time. The party was over. Now I appreciate some of the songs like gas panic or roll it over more than I did at the time. But still... I will always remember the come down and not meeting any of my expectations. Since then every oasis album was presented as a return to form... But the magic was long gone. Forever. 😢 Some pretty good songs in the rest of the albums, but never again a great great Oasis album. I think if we put together some of their later solo stuff... That would make a really mega oasis album. Maybe is time for another try and a massive tour.
Beautiful video, thank you James
Great video by the way, was looking for something to watch with my beers tonight and here it was waiting for me ;-) Nice one James!
Great video. Thanks James.
So many good songs on this album, I luv it!
For me SOTSOG is massively underrated and my go too Oasis album along with the first two albums. This was when Oasis grew up and started to explore themselves musically and experiment a bit like the Beatles did in their second half of their career.
Brother I SO LOVE YOUR CHANNEL❕
Brilliant well researched vid as always
Great video James! I was going through my drum and bass phase at that time so it was definitely a come down album for me 😂
“Things were more Democratic in the studio, but because of that dumb decisions were being made.” Seems to perfectly sum up a lot of things, not just Oasis
The most interesting period in Oasis history in my opion!
This is a great video James. I remember absolutely loving this album when it came out - but the couple of white songs on the album brought it down. Noel should have stuck to his guns on that one!
I have been thinking for years that Standing On The Shoulder of Giants was the epilogue to the original three albums. It feels buzzare, James to hear aloud the thoughts that I have had in my head for years!
Great video. Gas Panic is one of Noel’s most underrated songs.
this has always been one of my favourite oasis albums
Wham! was bigger. :-) Great job, so much detail in your videos.
Loved this video! Cheers
I was 18 when Standing on the Shoulder of Giants came out. I remember hearing it for the first time and feeling like it was the ultimate coda to everything the 90's were. We all rode such a high in that time, and nu metal along with boy bands became the thing in America. Even Green Day had fallen off, and rock music in America had shifted so far away from when Don't Look Back in Anger and Champagne Supernova were dominating MTV. I loved the record, and looking back now, Let's All Make Believe and Roll It Over really tells the story that the innocence and pure energy we all felt between 1991 through 1998 were truly gone. We've never recovered.

Good content, will listen again. 👍 👍 👍.
"I'm good at what I do. I was great. I might be great again someday..." Noel might really be the best rock n' roll interview ever.
I love how the bass sounds on this album, i almost would liked to see Noel lending the main guitar to Gem and grabbing the bass on live. Because on tracks like Go Let It Out or Who feels love is the bass what drives the song.
I've said for ages that if Noel had told people Sunday Morning Call was about an ecstasy come-down, rather than his ex-wife, a lot more people would like it. Himself included. The words fit perfectly. Noel should have kept Let's All Make Believe (I think he swapped it for Gas Panic or Little James). I really like the album. Makes me think of parties in the 90s and putting that album on at 10 in the morning when the MDMA and coke have worn off, the weed comes out and everyone is just chilling.

Hey James. This is an excellent video. I’m actually a fan of Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants. I like it more than Be Here Now. it’s my third favourite album, of course beaten by the first two albums. I like a majority of the songs on the album. I don’t think any songs on there are hateful or anything. And I massively agree with the B-sides being really great, especially Carry Us All, Let’s All Make Believe, (As Long As We’ve Got) Cigarettes In Hell and One Way Road. I’m actually in the minority of Oasis fans who like Little James. I just find it to be a pleasant song to listen to and it sounds sweet. Again, awesome video. I love your channel and you are my go to for Oasis content. Live Forever, you are a Rock N Roll Star. 👍
Beautiful in depth essay, love it! And I think you're bang on in placing the album in Oasis history. Sadly it deteriorated a bit further after this, but they regained strenght on Don't Believe The Truth and Dig Out Your Soul. Only to disappear forever after that :P
I bought a CD to hear the album properly before watch the video and it's absolutely awesome. I think beside Little James (it's nice), all the songs are bangers, but for me, the best song is curiously I Can See a Liar, followed by Gas Panic and Roll It Over. Sad it's not liked by many people as I imagined. Loved your video, you do an awesome work

Same here, personally loved the Wembley gigs as I heard Who Feels Love and Gas Panic live rather than the later ballads.
This is a great channel. I don't normally post comments because there is not much to say about Oasis that hasn't already been said but coincidentally I have been thinking about this album for a while now. I revisited it a couple of years ago and have been listening to it regularly since then. I always thought Heathen Chemistry was the strongest post 2000s record they did because it was the one that sounded most like Oasis but I was wrong, its definitely SOTSOG. For me personally PYMWYMI is a bit of stomper and the arrangement on Little James makes it a good track in the context of where it sits on the album. I agree with most that I Can See a Liar is disappointing. However, if you add Lets All Make Believe, Getting Older and the version of Solve My Mystery/Revolution Song (not the over-polished version from years later) from the SOTSOG sessions then you have arguably got the most interesting Oasis album of the lot. It would have been one of the greatest albums ever if they also had the version of Let There Be Love from DBTT, but unfortunately in 2000 it hadn't morphed from the acoustic demo with an earlier version of the lyrics. For anyone interested in the SOTSOG sessions, have a look at the 3cd SOTSOG Demos on youtube. Highly recommended!
Waiting for counsil skies review. Love think of a number, just heard the pets hop boys remix. Cannot want for james to talk about this album x
Great video as always, i've never seen any problems with Little James, the lyrics may sound too naive but the song overall is sweet and it have cool psychedelic vibes
This was actually the first Oasis album I thought "I'm going to buy that". The experimentation, working with samples and loops and trying something different is what attracted me to it, and I still think its one of their best. I Can See A Liar that will just rip your face right off!
Glad to see a vid on this topic. This album has always been my favourite *sounding* Oasis album even if one or two of the songs aren't so strong - fully agree on Mouth and Liar. Agree with other comments about how good Roll It Over is. And as has been said in one or two publications in the past, replacing the weaker songs on this album with the Go Let It Out b-sides would be a no brainer. One Way Road is better than some of the songs that made the album also for me. As for Little James - it is lyrically and harmonically primitive, but the sonic textures in the production are still enjoyable. This is the perhaps most experimental work Noel ever worked on and to me it was a success for that reason and it is a shame they never really revisited this dark sound.
Thanks. Love your work
Thank you for doing this video James. I fuckin' love that album!!!!
Great video James. you've cleared up a question I've had for years.. why did the oasis logo change? I didn't realise there was a 3 album masterplan, but now you've said it - the new logo must have been a visual sign for phase 2
"The charts will look after themselves"
I asked for this mini doc a while back. Thank you so much for doing it James 😊😊
I was a teen when this came out. I missed the first phase of oasis and this was my first album. I still love it. I do like PYMWYMI but I can agree with the other two songs. The b-sides from this album are brilliant. Is my third favourite oasis record. I love how trippy it sounds.
Replace "Sunday Morning Call" with "Cigarettes in Hell" or "One Way Road" and you've got gold. I also do consider "Let's All Make Believe" as something of a "credits" track to the album. "Little James" is too sincere and vulnerable as a track to really remove it. This album is an Oasis great and I'm tired of people pretending like it isn't.
SOTSOG is my 3rd favorite Oasis album (Morning Glory at 1 and Definitely Maybe at 2). I love the sound and the darkness of it. It’s different, and I appreciate it. Gas Panic is the best song they wrote post-first two albums and I will stand firmly behind that opinion.

Gas panic one of my favourite oasis songs. An absolute masterpiece
That b-side version of Helter Skelter is painful to me. They take one of the most energised Beatles tracks and turn into a one-note dirge with zero spirit. The live version on Familiar To Millions, with the Oasis 2.0 line-up is so much better in every way - though it’s still not as good as the original. But their version of My Generation is chef’s kiss
Great content and an excellent thought process. This is an excellent channel 👏👏👏
Roll It Over and Sunday Morning Call are all timers.
