oakmont country club fastest greens in the world

Спорт

I went to Oakmont this June 2009. And I could not believe the speed of the greens. Watch this video.

that makes no sense.. actually. Why would they slow down the green for the best golfers in the world? They must make it challenging. Unless, they put the cup in ridiculous places so they are forced to slow the greens down. So, they can actually get the ball in the hole. Edit: Oakmomt is actually one of the few golf courses that does slow the greens down. After playing there with a couple members (freshly cut) I understand why!

Thirsty Virus: He took it back 8 inches. A Tap is more like 2-3. That 20 footer seems like 4-5 and more break (after seeing what 8 inches did.) My gang of mid singles are always reading too little break on ultra fast (11+ for us) greens. That 5-6 foot trickle after the ball seems to come to rest just kills us. Pelz says most players (including pros) read too little break. Three times, as he says, is too much for me but on fast greens, when I see a foot of break, I take Dave’s advice and play 3 feet. Thanks to Pelz, I make a lot of money when we play those fast greens. (We normally see around 9.) BTW, I don’t believe Pelz is a naturally gifted putter/short game player. I appreciate his data but his style from his engineering background is not for me. PenguinGolf

When I worked at the US Amateur as a marshal in 2003 I saw a young man having a 4 foot putt on #2 for a birdie. The ball was above the hole. He missed the putt and the ball rolled off the green some 30 feet away. It finally stopped on the higher fringe cut about 5 feet in front of the green. He did make a bogey, which was a great effort considering that he had to be shaken up a bit.

I don’t want to go back too far, but let’s just start in the 1950’s. Here are the year’s, player’s names and winning score for each time the U.S. Open has been played at Oakmont: 1953 Ben Hogan -5 1962 Jack Nicklaus -1 1973 Johnny Miller -5 1983 Larry Nelson -4 1994 Ernie Els -5 2007 Angel Cabrera +5 2016 Dustin Johnson -4 I’d say Oakmont is a very fair and consistent test of golf and normally fits right in with a typical U.S. Open winning score which, over the years, has been in the range of E to -6 or so. Yes, there have been a few aberrations, but honestly not all that many, especially if you discount Tiger’s ridiculous score considering he was playing at a video game level at that time and Rory’s -16 number that he shot at Congressional because the course was playing very easy because they got a ton of rain and the course was super soft, however he did still win by 8 shots. I don’t know what was up in 2007. I know Oakmont is hard, but that winning score just doesn’t fit with any of the others. And the winning score the previous year at Winged Foot was also +5.

Most golfers will tell you they like fast greens. The folks at Oakmont take the idea pretty seriously. I have played in one round in the past when the greens were likely a bit faster than they usually are at Oakmont. The Ocean Course at Kiawah was in perfect condition this particular day, maybe the best ever. I’m not sure what the actual speed was that day but it had to be in the 14s and possibly even faster than that. The weather changed that morning and it became very breezy. The greens were so fast it was almost impossible to keep the ball on them. If you had an uphill putt that was downwind and you missed the hole, it would usually keep rolling and roll completely off the green. That was a Pro Am back in the 90’s and I believe the low score of the day was something like +6 or 7.

This putt is very downhill but putts like this do exist in some places on the course. Depending on the pin you have to know where to be but even more importantly where NOT to be with your approach. Put you approach above the hole and in some cases you will either make the putt or have a 20-30 footer coming back. I've even seen people putt the ball 20 yards down the fairway!

I use to wonder how they didn't burn the greens to get them so fast. But, if you saw the them up close you will instantly see that this grass is VERY different than any other course. There truly is no grain. You'll never see any form of substrate (soil) when fixing a ball mark because its just decades of healthy heavily compacted grass that grows on top of itself and deep below the putting surface. Its almost like that old flaky old form fit packaging foam (for lack of term/explanation). Difficult to describe. They have to be the truest greens on the planet.

A “real” golf course will keep their practice green at the same speed as the greens on the rest of the course. Like you say, a muni course might not put the same amount of effort into keeping the practice green and the regular greens the same. I GUARANTEE that Oakmont, widely considered to be one of the best courses in the world, keeps their practice green the same. What we’re seeing here could very well be a downhill putt and also wind aided. I had a medical problem a few years ago and can’t really play anymore, but when I was at my best, I got down to a 1 or 2 handicap and I played courses all the time where if I hit my ball in the wrong spot (above the hole) I could easily put a 20 footer 10-12 feet past the hole and I was putting on greens that were probably about a 10 on the stimp meter vs Oakmont’s 14 or 15.
