if the greens are fast, then you need to adjust your approach shots. I'd play them short all day, so I wouldn't have to put downhill. That doesn't mean it's a done deal, it'll be just to avoid triples and quads.

I don’t want to go back too far, but let’s just start in the 1950’s. Here are the year’s, player’s names and winning score for each time the U.S. Open has been played at Oakmont: 1953 Ben Hogan -5 1962 Jack Nicklaus -1 1973 Johnny Miller -5 1983 Larry Nelson -4 1994 Ernie Els -5 2007 Angel Cabrera +5 2016 Dustin Johnson -4 I’d say Oakmont is a very fair and consistent test of golf and normally fits right in with a typical U.S. Open winning score which, over the years, has been in the range of E to -6 or so. Yes, there have been a few aberrations, but honestly not all that many, especially if you discount Tiger’s ridiculous score considering he was playing at a video game level at that time and Rory’s -16 number that he shot at Congressional because the course was playing very easy because they got a ton of rain and the course was super soft, however he did still win by 8 shots. I don’t know what was up in 2007. I know Oakmont is hard, but that winning score just doesn’t fit with any of the others. And the winning score the previous year at Winged Foot was also +5.

Im a superintendent and clearly they have the greens way to fast to the point that its unfair and literally impossible just to lag a putt or the holes are cut in position on green that trumps the total degree allowed when cutting holes. Pisses me off to see supers do this shit on purpose fooling the public into thinking pros play on greens like that.

that's not because the greens are fast -- it is because it was downhill...a ball that nearly stops, re-starts and picks up speed is going downhill...I've played Oakmont and, yes, the greens are fast, but what you showed was a putt that reached a downhill point

  • @dblyoi

@@dblyoi gravity doesn't only exist on fast greens...a green with an area on it of 7% of slope that stimps at 8 will still roll downhill...it is why we don't position cups with more than 1% within a 3 foot circumference of it

Most golfers will tell you they like fast greens. The folks at Oakmont take the idea pretty seriously. I have played in one round in the past when the greens were likely a bit faster than they usually are at Oakmont. The Ocean Course at Kiawah was in perfect condition this particular day, maybe the best ever. I’m not sure what the actual speed was that day but it had to be in the 14s and possibly even faster than that. The weather changed that morning and it became very breezy. The greens were so fast it was almost impossible to keep the ball on them. If you had an uphill putt that was downwind and you missed the hole, it would usually keep rolling and roll completely off the green. That was a Pro Am back in the 90’s and I believe the low score of the day was something like +6 or 7.

I use to wonder how they didn't burn the greens to get them so fast. But, if you saw the them up close you will instantly see that this grass is VERY different than any other course. There truly is no grain. You'll never see any form of substrate (soil) when fixing a ball mark because its just decades of healthy heavily compacted grass that grows on top of itself and deep below the putting surface. Its almost like that old flaky old form fit packaging foam (for lack of term/explanation). Difficult to describe. They have to be the truest greens on the planet.

Thirsty Virus: He took it back 8 inches. A Tap is more like 2-3. That 20 footer seems like 4-5 and more break (after seeing what 8 inches did.) My gang of mid singles are always reading too little break on ultra fast (11+ for us) greens. That 5-6 foot trickle after the ball seems to come to rest just kills us. Pelz says most players (including pros) read too little break. Three times, as he says, is too much for me but on fast greens, when I see a foot of break, I take Dave’s advice and play 3 feet. Thanks to Pelz, I make a lot of money when we play those fast greens. (We normally see around 9.) BTW, I don’t believe Pelz is a naturally gifted putter/short game player. I appreciate his data but his style from his engineering background is not for me. PenguinGolf

This is where I’m playing for regionals (if I am in top 5 scores out of 35, I go to states). I was able to play a practice round and the greens were not holding (unless pinched) and they were extremely fast. I hit a bunker shot and it rolled all the way to the fairway. Hole #2 bad green!
