O Why Not Tonight?

Музыка

From the Wilson Brothers LP Words of Life: Classic invitational hymn recorded in 1973. My favorite part of the song is 1:41to 1:48 because it encompasses a very beautiful moment on the electric guitar played by youngest brother, Henry, followed closely by the high peak of the harmony of the two older brothers on "This is the time, then be wise," (especially the tenor vocal). I do not know who played bass or snare on this recording. Wish I did.

I do remember singing this song in church for the Invitation many times. My friend, Ruby, who just passed away, her mother played the organ, and my grandmother played the piano at our church. Ruby’s mom was from the south, and she always played with panache - a style all her own. Your toes were definitely tapping when she played the piano or the organ. And she played by ear, too. I loved Ruby’s mom, dearly. She was my second mom. She is the lady I have always wanted to grow up and be like - someday, maybe, I will finally grow up and actually be like her! She was a great Christian lady. One of the last times I saw her, just before she passed away a few years ago, she and I went to the grocery store together. She was having difficulty with episodes of vertigo. So she tucked her arm into mine, and as we slowly walked into the store, she said to me - “ when you were just learning to walk, I would hold your hand and help you. Now it’s your turn to hold my hand and help me.” That made me teary eyed. I couldn’t imagine life without her. She had Ruby and her younger sister when she was in her late 40s. (I am two years younger than Ruby, and 9 months older than her sister). They were surprise babies! Their mom had a severe stroke just before she passed away. She was too young. During her last hours, I was able to tell her that I would see her again in Heaven. She smiled. Ruby’s dad was a lay pastor, and he had planted many churches between Oklahoma and California. He played the guitar, banjo, and harmonica. He was quite good on the harmonica, too. I have had many wonderful Christians in my life that have shaped me from a baby to being an adult with their example, guidance, friendship and love - in El Cajon as I grew up, in Iowa as I became an adult, and now here in North Carolina. I feel so very blessed. I hope I can be an example to those around me - it’s my turn to help others grow in their walk with Christ. I find that exciting and scary all at the same time. I don’t think I am smart enough to do that. I have so much more to learn myself! And, hey, I am only 21, so how can I be old enough to be a leader? Ha! I am just kidding. I don’t think I would want to be 21 again. Well, maybe, only if I could know you, though. Would you want to be 21 again? Do you ever feel like you aren’t old enough for younger kids to look up to for answers about life? I loved hearing your Dad and uncles sing this song. The beat in it reminded me of Ruby’s mom. Even though it is a sobering thought - why not tonight? - there is so much joy when someone does answer with a positive! I enjoyed your Uncle Henry’s guitar playing. Are there any recordings of you playing with the Wilson Brothers? Thank you for sharing this video! It was a very good song with a very important question! I've heard this sung by many different people, some famous and some unknown, but none better than this! This is the epitome of Appalachian gospel music. With all today's gospel musicians trying to imitate the "country" Nashville sound this is like a sip of cool clean springwater. Encore! Encore!
