    Can we just stop to appreciate that EJ Cardona, the main tenor, holds not only the final, resonant note for a FULL 25 SECONDS, but does so with a note shift upwards halfway through, right off of normal singing, and LOUDLY. Mad props to him and his lungs.

    @@TheFanaticster I wholeheartedly disagree. Good music, is good music. They are very talented but they lack a low end. It is all middle and high and not enough low to balance out the aesthetic experience(that breathless sensation when you are affected by music). It's also slow and too ponderous in this particular recording. Just about every group on the planet has done a Christmas album and have seen millions of views. Look up the Pentatonix or Home Free or Valor. All have upbeat versions with a basso profundo to balance out all the high voices.

  • @charlesperigord1599

    @charlesperigord1599

    @@jubenvi2 - I think Voctave prefers a more traditional choral sound mix, in which bass voices rarely predominate. This is a madrigal-sized group (8-17 members), not a quintet like Pentatonix or Home Free. You can hear their basses more distinctly in the Disney medley they recorded with Kirstie Maldonado of Pentatonix and her husband. I see little virtue in having them do a bouncy, up-tempo "O Come All Ye Faithful." Pentatonix already did that, with a version that incorporates elements of the "Missa Luba".

    I have been a professional musician all of my adult life after attending Berklee College of Music. These singers are the creme de la creme anywhere. Kudos to the rich jazz harmonies. They execute same with perfect intonation. Singers Unlimited, Hi Lo's, Four Freshmen...the legacy is well documented. On a lighter note, does anyone agree that these 11 wonderful talents sound larger and more harmonically rich than the Mormon Tabernacle Choir with their large forces?

    Staggered breathing is where two or more performers are singing or playing the same note and take turns breathing through a long note or passage. Circular breathing is where horn players, Sax, Trumpet, etc, fill their mouth with air, keep the outgoing air pressure constant with their cheeks while breathing in through their nose to fill their lungs and start the whole process over again. What EJ demonstrated was fantastic note placement, breath control through the entire note, and have enough left over to jump up to the higher note at the end, and still have a little left after the ending so that the note didn't die off. This takes constant and consistent pressure with the diaphragm to push the air over the vocal cords. Not many people have the lung capacity or the control to pull this off the way he did. With his control he could have easily held the note even longer. Kudos to EJ and the entire group.

    How has this existed for five years and I'm only just discovering it in Dec 2023?! My entire Christmas playlist is a cappella (admittedly mainly Pentatonix), but I've had Voctave's Mary Did You Know in there, too. You'd think this one would have crossed my notice before now. I do not always enjoy Voctave--so much upper soprano and piercing notes that seem to be placed there just because they can, but some of their work blows me away, as does this amazing performance. Watching the soloist's facial features as he sings is fascinating, as you see how much physical work is involved in shaping and holding sounds. And that last note--25 seconds held including the shift up--man oh man oh man! I love this intensely!
