Nylon VS Carbon - Which one is faster? Saucony Endorphin Speed - New Balance Fuel Cell TC

Спорт

After a lot of people saw the video from two weeks ago I decided to do another comparison between shoes. This time I wanted to compare the lighter Saucony Endorphin Speed with the heavier New Balance Fuel Cell TC. One has a nylon plate, the other one a carbon plate. What difference would this make?
Now, this is not a scientific experiment, just a fun exercise where I can try out different shoes and compare how I run in them. This doesn't mean one shoe is better than the other.
I asked you guys which shoe would be faster, and most of you guys thought the Endorphin Speed. To see if you were right, check out the video!
Anyway, these are both fantastic shoes that I have reviewed. I like them both and use them differently in my training.
Have you tried either of them? What do you think? Write it in the comments down below.

    I vote for nylon plate, I don't mind if it is a little slower, it stresses my feet much less than a carbon plate and this is important in my ultrarunning practice

    Hands-down the TC for me. Buying a 2nd pair on 50% sale today. The E. Speed didn't work for me somehow. I kept on trying to like it since everyone like singing praises on the Speed but I finally gave up after about 100miles. Gave the pair away and have no regrets. Tq for the awesome video.

    Nice and fun video! Obviously you’re also getting fitter week after week, so that could probably explain why you’re more efficient in Zone 3

    Tc is a tiny bit wider in the forefoot, but the upper is more harsh so it’s the only one I have gotten a blister in. Thanks 😊

    Nice comparison. I would say though that power is input and speed is output. If you have a higher input (power) and a proportionally higher output (speed) that means both are similar and not better or worse. In your case the higher heart rate helps supporting that, meaning, on Zone 3 both are actually similar, you did run more on TC (higher distance/speed) but you were putting a higher effort (power /bpm). A better shoe would require less power for the same speed or effort, resulting on a higher efficiency. Power meters are great tools for comparisons like this. Merry Christmas 🎄

    Hey, i thought about this as well. But Polar measures power by hand movement, so I would explain it like this. If I can run with higher movement and pace, but still have the same heart rate then it's a good thing for the shoe. The heart rate is a tiny bit higher in the TC, and thus I also say that you can argue that these are so similar that its to tell which one is faster. These two shoes are so close, but if I did it on a treadmill with a fixed pace it would be easier to see. I would also try using lactate levels and run several times in different shoes in order to get results over a bigger time period. But hey, we'll see if I get enough likes to do that.

    @@LarsIvarHenriksen I know Polar measures on the wirst but it extrapolates to what is happening while you run, also considering elevation gain and other energy requirement factors, and not only the movements of your arms per se. I’ve seen many people comparing it to Stryd, and although the numbers shown are different (long story), the curves (normally) match. While I agree that comparing lactate levels will give you a reliable verdict, all I’m trying to say is that power is a technology that enable us to reach pretty similar conclusions without the hassles of a lactate or VO2 test. Just keep running on both and look (and trust) the different power data. Im sure you will have a very reliable result afterwards, but remember that power should not be compared parallel to speed, rather agains (input vs output). I hope this helps, we definitely need more channels using power meters when doing comparisons. Keep the great work👊🏼🏃🏽

    Haven't tried the Endorphin Pro, but I get lots more speed from the TC, than my nylon plate shoe I have from NB.

    Nice video !!! I have speed, 4% and next and the most fun to run are speed. They have nothing to envy to the nike although perhaps for long distances the nike are better but shorter until halfmarathon the speed is very fast !!!!

    I conducted a similar experiment a few months ago - five miles at marathon pace in the each shoe - and found the results inconclusive. I think that both shoes achieve their goals by different means. I enjoy both a great deal but prefer the lighter, more stable ride of the Saucony.

    What research has suggested that carbon plates make you faster at distances less than marathons?

  • @phylosophdotcom

    @phylosophdotcom

    we haven't got much research done apart from the one claiming the plate contributing to no more than 1%. Everything else is the PEBA foam doing the magic. They usually add the plate to make the shoe more rigid when using soft foams.

  • @AncoraImparoPiper

    @AncoraImparoPiper

    @@phylosophdotcom That is indeed my understanding: the magic is in the foam. The aim of the carbon plate is to add some stability to the foam.

    I think this also is a very subjective thing and will vary a lot between people. I for instance will run deadly slow in a shoe without any stiffness, like a Saucony Freedom. That plate changes everything for me, but I don’t know how much.

    @@LarsIvarHenriksen Have you tried the Metaracer and NB Rebel? Both low stack, one has carbon plate the other doesn't. I feel super fast in both and adore them. By contrast, I've yet to feel at home in the Endorphin Pro. Sure it is purely subjective but if it helps me run happier its worth it.

    @@AncoraImparoPiper at the store we see people who can’t run in soft shoes because they get knee pain, and people who can’t run in firmer shoes because they get knee pain. Everybody is different and runs differently. I am getting the Meta racer in a months time, so I am very much looking forward to it :) was wondering if I should do the new rebel vs the fuel cell rc when they arrive. They will be very similar apart from the plate.
