Nyctotherus, A Ciliated Protozoa Parasite in Reptiles

The organism you see is Nyctotherus, a large ciliated protozoa.
You can see the trophozoite swimming around on this direct fecal smear under a microscope.
Cysts are passed in the feces and are they transmit to the next host by fecal-oral contamination.
In some species, especially herbivorous ones such as tortoises, these can be considered normal microflora and pose no threat to your reptile. However if a reptile is showing signs of disease such as anorexia, weight loss, or diarrhea, treatment may be recommended by your vet.
