@@jacksonduggan Not true. People cared (and still do care) when the wildfires first broke out, but started paying even more attention when the smoke started to make its way out of Canada. It initially drifted, but reached maximum capacity once it hit NYC. It was literally the worst in the world on June 7th (and that's not even figuratively speaking) with an AQI of nearly 500 which was also the city's worst since 1966. It's incredibly rare for the Eastern and Midwest US to get that bad. Can't say the same for places like Australia, the Western US/Canada and India where it's a common occurrence. That's why it was getting the most attention.

Thanks for your solidarity Casey. A lot of New Yorkers don't realize but what they're facing now with their air quality is the reality for many Canadians during the warmer months of the year. Last month my father and brother were evacuated from their home in Western Canada due to uncontrolled wildfires, luckily they had somewhere to stay. Some families aren't so lucky, furthermore Canada is so vast and we have such a small population that when these fires start we lack the man power to keep them in control, we often have to get firefighters from other countries flown in to help. Keep us in your prayers ya'll.

This is a very serious problem in Canada and why we moved out of the west coast. Every year this happens and the last summer we were in Vancouver it got this bad for almost a month. Unfortunately budgets have not been put into prevention of fires and now it's just reaction to fires which is obviously too late by then. It's only going to get worse and we need to pressure governments to do more and budget more towards future forest fire management. Really sorry for those people having to go through this. This reminds me of the Australian bush fires in 2020, a lot of the smoke travelled over the Tasman sea to the upper areas of the North Island in New Zealand, the sky was orange and you could almost taste the ash. I remember one day looking out my window and the sky was blue with not much clouds, then an hour or so later I looked out again and it was all yellow. It's fascinating how bush fires can cause so much impact to the air we breathe, even if the bush fires are thousands of kilometers away.

Last month my father and brother were evacuated from their home in Western Canada due to uncontrolled wildfires, luckily they had somewhere to stay. Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, New Mexico, Colorado. All I can say is, Welcome to the club, Casey! Haha. Stay safe out there.
Sorry from Canada. :( We've been dealing with this every summer for the last six years and it's no fun. I wrote my master's thesis when the air quality in my city actually was the worst in the country and it was awful. No reprieve because you couldn't go outside, couldn't open windows. I taped furnace filters to the back of box fans and they would turn black in a couple days. I hope it passes quickly for you. All sports and outdoor activity was cancelled and strongly advised against personal exercise. It’s a real problem up here with wildfires 😣

Experienced this quite a few times in the four corners. Especially in Albuquerque, NM. Pretty wild to see for the first time. Especially in NYC
I remember 2021 in the Willamette valley in Oregon it was so bad with wildfire smoke you couldn't see more than 10 feet at times. Another thing I remember was the sun, because it was such dense smoke it was only light out for a few hours a day when it was directly above and the outline of the sun was a rich red. Also overtime people became more and more exhausted from a many factors from less oxygen and not being able to get oxygen into the body because carbon monoxide. One last thing was I remember that super vibrant orange that's in the video. Good luck New York your going to need it.
Wow Casey thank you for the nice message at the end. I’m a wildland firefighter and have been working directly on the fires in Alberta. My colleges are at the Quebec fires right now. The haze the smokes create is certainly very scary, a mask definitely does help. Stay safe -Alex

This is a very serious problem in Canada and why we moved out of the west coast. Every year this happens and the last summer we were in Vancouver it got this bad for almost a month. Unfortunately budgets have not been put into prevention of fires and now it's just reaction to fires which is obviously too late by then. @@elijahkurk1982 currently live in rural Kentucky (was born here, it’s not something I’m happy about) and the police get called to the gas station near my house almost every day
I live in Northern Alberta. It’s been like this on and off for many of us. Many others, including my mother in law, have even lost their homes. The small community that I live in with my family went without power for a week, at one point. This is not easy for a lot of us. Sorry that you guys have to deal with it, too.
This happens every year here in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Wildfires blot out the sun like this. Had some hazy smoke today.
Casey it's a small comunity. I watch you from Romania, for a long time, and i apreciate all your work. Congratualions for everything and i hope i meet tou someday
A few years ago a giant slaughterhouse in my home town burned down. It was advised to close all windows and stay indoors. It looked like a scene from a hell on earth movie scenario. The Clouds were pure black as far as the horizon. In the middle of the day it looked like weird eclipse lighting.

I was in the Fort McMurray, AB, Canada wildfire of 2016 and it was way worse than this. I remember waking up to an evacuation emergency with my clothes and inside of my house smelling like campfire smoke. The city had a hue like Mars. We evacuated south of Fort Mac to Edmonton and stayed there for about a month. It was crazy and this year brings back so much memories of that particular season in my life.

Fellow Albertan here. I remember the Fort Mac fires quite well and most summers we get quite the orange hue here in Olds. Sometimes I forget the rest of the world doesn't get smoke every year.

But was that also 1200 km away?

@@nowthatsinteresting313 you could have fires burning 20km away but if the wind is blowing the smoke away from you, you'll never get it. Even though I'm nowhere near Fort Mac, the wind blew it all down towards us. Also I'm about 600km from Fort Mac
This happeneds every year here in Medford Oregon, sending love and prayers to all the firefighters that are battling these wild fires
Love the new Mexico filter update for NYC
Thanks for covering the conditions here in NYC Casey! Its gets super orange then kind of clear but if you look at how your window filters the light it’s still casting orange shadows which is crazy.
As a northern Californian it's hilarious watching people react to this like it's the first time it's ever happened. We had a completely orange sky for almost a month straight back in 2020

Yep. I'm in Washington state and this is a common deal every summer for the last 10 years. We've had the AQI into the 400s several times.

No one said it never happened before, it’s just about the fact that this is a new thing for this region.

I got an ad for health insurance before the video played 😂
Those drone shots were marvelous, it was crazy from the Jersey side of things but man wish I was able to see it from the city.
