NYC's HIDDEN FAIRYLAND: Forest Hills, Queens
Ойын-сауық
In the bustling streets of Queens, New York is a hidden place unlike anywhere else in the city. This tunnel here is a portal to an architectural fairyland where the bustle of New York is traded for winding tree lined streets, whimsical Tudor castles, and carefully landscaped parks. It’s called Forest Hills, and it was envisioned over a century ago as a suburban escape from the city, designed after the garden cities of England. And though decades upon decades of change and growth have drastically changed its surroundings, it has maintained its unique character, becoming one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the entire borough. Let’s explore why this place exists, what makes it so special, and how it’s been able to maintain its character as the city grew around it.

@@chiriforever6535 Not quite true, as you can be arrested if you smoke weed on federal property within NYS/NYC, such as the portions of Gateway National Park in Staten Island. I don't smoke weed (have always disliked it), so I have no knowledge of whether this jurisdictional issue has led to actual arrests in New York, but I recall some folks being prosecuted for smoking weed on federal land in New Jersey in the not too distant past. Plus you can't smoke weed *anywhere* in New York (such as in subway cars, stations, most restaurants, etc.), but only where you can smoke cigarettes, but folks generally know this.

I live in Nassau County and once took the LIRR to Forest Hills specifically to take a walk through the area. It was an afternoon in early autumn and the golden light only enhanced the beauty of these streets. It was a magical world. You have to see it yourself to believe it!

I found this gem on Instagram and the last time I visited NYC, we made a point of going here to explore. It took us less than 15 min from Penn Station on th LIRR. Such a stunning neighborhood!

Hey Scott. Forest Hills was within NYC as of 1898 when all of Queens County was incorporated into what was then called Greater NY because the city boundaries were extended far beyond Manhattan/old NYC to include the other 4 boroughs. I grew up n FH. Austin street was very cool, bohemian, and a trendy hangout, like a street somewhere in London back in the 60’s-70’s. The US Open Tennis Tournament was held there at the stadium along with great concerts. They had really cool boutiques: Ronnie’s, Genesis, Revelation, The Village Set (which later moved to Rego Park) and others.

Boy did you bring back memories. I lived in FH for a several years. Austin Street was where I ended up a lot of the time, and The Village Set was a great place to shop. I remember when the Beatles came to the FH stadium-the screams were deafening, even in FH Gardens. But, the most beautiful moments were during Christmas when the streets took on a magical, back-in-time, enchanted feeling. I later moved CA, but am now back on the east coast (or as we sometimes say: the right coast-meaning correct). 😆

@@MikeCee7 As far as completely virgin, unspoiled blank canvas land you may be correct. Yet there are many failing or already abandoned sprawling industrial, commercial and other properties which if combined could have an equally as good amount of acreage and effect if cooperatively worked toward by many sectors. It would have to be integrated just like this community was from it's inception. There are pockets like this in most all boroughs and counties if you look closely yet probably the zoning/local red tape and bureaucracy is what prohibits cost effectiveness or doesn't encourage it. I'm theoretically against taking more natural land when we're already wasting what we have with poor planning and lack of recycling/up cycling efforts or systems at odds with each other.

Unfortunately, the HOA is no longer allowing them to have outdoor seating in the Summer and they have not been able to get a permit to install a new flue so their legendary burgers have been off the menu for months and that has hurt their business. It’s one of the great “dive bars” in New York City.
