It's a song about repentance and forgiveness. She regretted that all the rest of her days. He loved her despite that, and she loved him. It's a tragic love story.

It's also a beautiful moral lesson. It only takes one choice to have disastrous results. She was being selfish and living in the moment.. it was wrong, but that choice is made by people everyday. Any choice you make, perhaps you should think what could come of it.

Ehhh...she made the bed. Lie in it. She should regret it. She didn't love him enough to not cheat on him while he was protecting his and her country so yeah. This isn't an accident. It was a choice she consciously made. She deserves every bit of anguish she got.

@@Mudcat3434 This was WW2 1939 to 1945, have you any idea what it was like then, no mobile phones then no nothing, the only way you knew if dead or alive is whether they came home, years not months, no leave, no correspondence only letters if they arrived, telegrams for dead or missing and they were hit and miss. No coming home for burial, you stayed where you fell, now poppy fields, multi thousands died, 2 or 3 YEARS away. I'm not condoning it but this can be understood more than now, where there's no excuse. Hell on earth nobody knew anything, I'm forgetting the concentration camps where really you had no chance, starved to death. You read and watch videos about it maybe you'll have a better understanding and not be so blinkered. No joining for a job, you were called up and refusing to go was prison where it was hell for a different reason, bullied, attacked, spat on, I know my father was a pacifist and had to prove he wasn't a coward, if you couldn't prove it you went forcibly. You haven't a clue...

Alison is an amazing singer. She has won many awards. I'll suggest two of her songs: "When You Say Nothing At All" a cover of a Keith Whitley song. A very sweet love song. "Jacob's Dream" based on a true story but it is a very sad song. Since you've mentioned liking videos with a story, let me suggest two more female artists: "Fancy"--Reba McEntire "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" -- Patty Loveless Whatever you decide to react to next, I'll love seeing what you react to next.

Keith Whitley did not sing this song. It was written in 2000 by Bill Anderson and Jon Randall. Keith Whitley died in 1989. Brad and Allison originally recorded this song in 2003. Bill Anderson spoke about it on The Old Opry at Carnegie Hall concert. He shopped it around and nobody wanted to record it. He said one day Brad called him up and told him he wanted to record it and would ask Allison to be his duet partner.

The video on your show started late in the original video. I hope you saw it all from the beginning. Aside from the silk of Brads voice and the beautiful voice of Alison, Ricky Schroeder’s (Silver Spoons) portrayal of the soldier, was perhaps his best acting. In defense of the woman, he went off to war, his days filled with following orders, fighting, and trying to survive to come home. Sadly, hers were filled with heartache, loneliness, and emptiness. If you notice, in the first bar scene, she is imagining dancing with him. Later, she is desperately searching for him, but could never quite connect with him. Watch her flinch under accusing eyes, as the guns salute at his funeral. War isn’t easy, for those that go and fight in fear, and those that wait in fear. The little girl at the end was not a daughter of theirs, but a child blessed with being able to see the two ghosts finally find, and forgive each other.

I was raised ny people who survived World War II. I heard stories about men who were drafted in early 1942 who returned in late 1945 to wives with one year old children. I also learned about the abject terror that Marines felt during the Pacific campaign. The fear of falling asleep, only to be slaughtered by the silent Japanese slithering into his fighting hole to slit his throat or bayonet him. and then, he comes home to this level of betrayal. The viseo had many objectionable aspects, but the ones that were most noticeable to me were his family allowing her to attend his funeral and allowing her to be interred anywhere close to him.

I absolutely love Alison Krauss. She has a very unique voice. I know it every time I hear it now. I know this is probably the first song you've heard her on. Check out some more of her songs. She is also a very talented fiddle player. This song with her and Brad is basically a classic even though it probably doesn't fit the required time period for it to be a classic yet. The story of this song is very tragic. I served in the US Army for over 20 years and I was one of the lucky ones to have never experienced anything like this. My wife and I have been together for 40 years now. I do know of and witnessed the effects of something like this happening to soldiers that have been away from their loved ones. It can get pretty ugly sometimes. Again, I thank the Lord that I have a devoted, loving wife that put up with all the hell that being deployed to a war zone can cause. She's truly MY ROCK! I loved your reactions to this video. 👍👍

The difficulty of the family that sticks with the service personnel through it all, TDY (temporary duty), deployments, moving again and again, that is less known than that the person serving goes through. It is sooo much more than them going on a long trip, the family must take care of the home, school, work, job, vehicle, problems, celebrations, holidays, all without their loved one who is also missing out!

I believe that in the beginning of the song, everyone else doesn't or hasn't yet found that rock in their lives as he did with her. When that rock is broken, the damage of the war takes its toll the courage he had to keep moving forward to get back to the love of his life. The war floods back into his memories and the betrayal of this woman to and its to the point that he drinks and in turn takes his own life.

Thing to remember is that we all make mistakes. And our mistakes sometimes hurt the ones around us. She hurt him, no doubt. But if he didn't truly love her, it wouldn't have been enough pain to drive him to drink himself to death. And in turn, the fact that she never got over him is a testament to the idea that she truly regretted and repented from what she had done to him. Which means that, even though she faltered, she still, deep down, loved him too. But she f**ked up. And we all, in our own ways, f**k up sometimes. That doesn't make what she did OK, but as one grows as a human, one learns that these things happen in weak moments, and one learns to forgive. He, in the video, learned that after his own death, and in his spirit, still being in love with her, he forgave her, and she, while on earth, never forgave herself for what she did to him. But in death, forgiveness comes more easily. In that way, it is still a beautiful story. We realize when all is said and done, that we have all done things that hurt others. And we regret these things. But once we regret them, we can turn from them and try to do better. It's unfortunate that it sometimes takes coming to and end before we do that. But if you talk to a lot of older people, you'll find them far more forgiving of past offenses (in most cases) than younger people. And there's a reason for this. Time, and our own failings, help us to realize that all humans are fallible. And we come to realize, as time goes on, how many things we ourselves have done that hurt those around us -- not necessarily cheating, but a myriad of things. Listen to Johnny Cash's rendition of Trent Reznor's "Hurt" (ideally with the video) for a true illustration of this. Watch the video; listen to the conviction in his delivery. As we age, we come to realize our own failings, and once we realize those, we find it much easier to forgive others. Beautiful video, beautiful story. "The rumors flew, but nobody knew how much she blamed herself." As much as the "burning end of a midnight cigarette" line hits home, Allison's later line also is very telling of the story.

You should familiarize yourself with Alison Krauss Union Station. They're the finest Bluegrass(NewGrass?) band around for the past 30 years. I saw them at a Missouri concert in 2004, and would go again in a heartbeat. Find Jerry Douglas playing "Tribute to Peador O'Donnell". I can't stop listening to it. It's a different tune played on a very nice sounding resonator slide guitar(dobro).
