My favorite brooks and dun song of all time. I believe i had an old lady I used to visit all the time when I was a kid. That song reminds me of her so much. The sweetest old lady ever.

She put him out, snuffed his spirit. Hard to conceive of the pain of coming back from possibly years of fighting during WWII supported by the memory of the woman you love and want to spend you life with to find that. However the reality is so common for soldiers that we used to sing about "Jody", a fictional character back in the civilian world who was taking our girlfriends and wives while we were serving (sometimes resulting in a "Dear John" letter), to keep cadence as we marched. The songs, which had differing and often comical themes, were often called "jodies". One of my favorite jodies addressed how crazy we'd have to be to "re-up" (reinlist). We routinely sang it as we marched, although jodies are most common during initial training, not so much when serving in your regular unit. Important to note, most soldiers who suffer such an experience don't drink themselves to death, nor do they suffer from PTSD, they work through it and eventually happily get on with life. Incidentally, Alison Krauss may have the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.

My dad never truly came back from war. He was gone most of my life and when he was back he wasnt here. He left us when he couldnt handle life anymore. The hardest part was making sure my younger siblings didnt carry any guilt or responsibility. And making sure my mum knew she did everything she could and she was enough. Nobody could have been enough to change where his mind was. I still love him miss him and am mad at him EVERY SINGLE DAY

I didn't come back the same either. So sorry for your loss. I'm a two time widower but the things we saw really effected us. I'm still an alcoholic but it takes a lot to deal with what no one should have to see

Paisley has another great music video which is both comical and heartfelt "Waiting On A Woman". Fans of the late beloved actor Andy Griffith will also enjoy the video. BTW, while not evident in this video Brad Paisley is a guitar master as you will see if you watch more of his videos. Keith Urban is another guitar master in the country genre who has many great music videos. On the military theme check out his "For You"...terrific production. When you watch Urban's creations you'll see the amazing variety of styles within the country genre.

He was Also the Director and the Girl at the End that watches their spirits walk away is Rick's Daughter....... Allison is a Legend..... my great grandpa fought in ww2 and my uncle fought in vietnam, i have no idea how hard it is personally but i know its hard. thank you for your service sir i hope your life is good now!

The little girl is there because people say children can see more easily into the spirit realm. It was the child who saw their souls hand-in-hand.

The little girl at the funeral (it is said children can see spirits) saw them get back together after they both died

As I understand it, the little girl at the end is Ricky Schroeder's daughter and the names on the graves are his parents along with their birth/death dates.

This is probably one of the saddest most beautiful songs I've ever heard there another song that is equally if not more powerful and emotional it's a song called The lighthouse song by a band named nickel Creek I think both of these songs are real tearjerkers but they're very powerful and beautiful songs

This is the first time I've seen the video but have listened to the song many times and it get's me very time. The sad thing about the video is just how true it was. So many men would come home from war to find their wife or sweetheart with another man, it happened to my step-granddad in the WWII, he went home home one day to find the door locked so he knocked. His wife opened their bedroom window and told him to clear off as she had another man now. So sad and after everything he'd been through. But her lose was our gain 😁

What gets me is that this song was about how a soldier went to war, clung onto the promise of wife and family, survives only to come home to her nailing another dude. She broke his heart and literally tore his entire reason to make it home driving him over the edge. So why does anyone feel any sort of sympathy towards her? Sorry but I and too many other guys have gone through similar situations and in my mind nothing is lower than someone like her...

That all played out over several years of his drinking, and her drinking after he passed. The husband was played by Rick Schroeder, and the two kids in the video was Rick's actual son and daughter and played their kids in the video. In the end, he reaches out with forgiveness and they come back together in the afterlife; hence the daughter smiling as they embrace, that mom and dad are back together.

That is the part that feels wrong in this video. She told him to come back and they will start their family. He comes back to her with a man in their bed. They didn't have a family.

They never insinuated in the video they had a family. They never got back together after he found her with the other man!! Neither one of them could get over each other and both of them drank theirselves to death. They used the little girl at the burial to be able to see the couple re-unite in the afterlife. Usually kids and animals are rumored to see things adults can’t see. They aren’t saying the little girl is their kid 🤦🏻‍♂️!!

They say little kids and animals can see ghosts. The little girl isn’t their daughter. That would mess the whole video up. That doesn’t make sense. This sort of stuff did happen, and I wouldn't even say it was all that uncommon. My dad served as a Navy pilot in WW2 and was married just before he deployed. His honeymoon was them driving from the Ozarks out to San Diego for him to ship out. She wrote loving letters all through his time abroad. He saved them and I found them in the attic after he passed, and there were no signs of any trouble. Then when he returned he was first sent to a base in New Jersey and shortly after she walked into the mess hall, found him, said she wanted a divorce and immediately left. He was so stunned that she was gone before he realized how far she was from her home in the Missouri Ozarks. There were various rumors including a number about infidelity, but I won't claim to know the whole story. I do know he helped her occasionally, in spite of his pain, to get back on her feet again after they split. And they maintained some level of contact because I found a letter from around 1990. I know it wasn't a secret from my mother and she also married before her first husband deployed. That husband was KIA and my parents met at a university after the war. Before my father passed in 2012 I showed him this video. He was silent until the end, then just nodded. It hit too close to home.

Let me say. If a solider came home and found that situation. Don’t believe it would end like that. Not even close.

I know the feeling in this song. I came home from deployment, standing there in my dress whites with a dozen long stem roses. She never showed. She left me for someone else saying we grew into 2 different people and not as a couple. This was back in 2011 and I still haven't recovered. It's a hard reality these days. the marriage rate in the military is very low.

I saw Brad Paisley at jazz fest so it wasn't one of his concerts. He finished all the songs there though. This was a while back when he was still recording his fifth gear album. Me personally I have never seen anybody that can play the guitar the way he can. His hands move so fast you literally can't see them.

This song hits me pretty hard. I served in the Army for 8 years. When I came off deployment, I didn't know what was wrong yet but found out later I was suffering from PTSD, depression, and high anxiety. When I first came home, all I could do to halfway stop the nightmares and night terrors was drink and drink alot. So that's what I did. To the point I was coughing up blood and didn't care about anything or anyone. You see clips where people come home and there are parties at their battalion HQ and families are there? Yeah, I came home to an empty airport at 2am with half the lights turned off. But coming home from deployment, realizing you really don't have what you thought you did then drinking yourself to death! I was about as close as a person could get!

It's taken a while but I feel like I am at least heading in the right direction! You have to figure my unit was one of the earlier waves going over. I came home in early 2003. They really had nothing in place. I have personally seen half a dozen suicides due to letters saying the significant other had moved on and wasn't waiting any longer. I didn't get that letter over there. I came home and found out she was with my best friend at my brothers house. Everyone knew, my family, her family, all of my friends et. and nobody said anything. That started my diet of Jack Daniels breakfast lunch and dinner. Eventually adding other narcotics to try and self medicate while sitting alone in a house full of firearms. I was definitely not in a good place. Most of my days I would sit at my kitchen table with my JD and whatever else I had usually in powder form and a pistol and waited. @@SilverFlame819
