NYC Central Park Loop • Bike & Hike • Manhattan, NY • 5/27/23

This Memorial Day weekend was perfect weather to bike around the Central Park loop and check out the sites. This world famous park has so much cool stuff in it, you can spend days exploring. I started at the Columbus Circle entrance on E 59th Street and rode the full 6 mile loop up to 110th Street Cathedral Parkway and back down. Stopped off to see various things like the Alice in Wonderland statues, The Mall & Literary Walk, Naumburg Bandshell, Bethesda Terrace & Fountain, The Reservoir, Guggenheim Museum, North Woods, Tavern on the Green, Sheep Meadow and much more. If you look closely you’ll see the back of The Met on the east side of the lower park early on in the video. Also, be on the look out for a guy I call “The Flag Dude” that I’ve randomly bumped into many times over the years on the Upper West Side. He bikes around all the time with American flags flying in the breeze. Very appropriate for this weekend. Glad I caught him in this video rolling around. 🇺🇸
The park was designed and created by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, starting in 1858, to address the recreational needs of the rapidly growing city. Its original purpose was to offer city dwellers an experience of the countryside and an escape from the stresses of urban life by interacting with nature. Over 150 years later and the park still serves that essential purpose. The 843 acres contain over 18,000 trees, which help clean the air and provide a habitat for wildlife, including over 200 species of birds that pass through on the Atlantic Flyway.
It’s a must see attraction when visiting NYC. Whether you walk, run, bike, skate, ride in a horse carriage, row a boat or just sit and relax, it’s an amazing place to spend your time. Something people of all ages can enjoy. I think the annual estimated 42 million visitors will agree!
