NX611 AVRO LANCASTER "JUST JANE" TAXY RIDE • LINCOLNHSIRE AVIATION HERITAGE CENTRE EAST KIRKBY

Ойын-сауық

After streaming at RAF Coningsby, talking about the history of Bomber Command along with RAF Coningsby’s history and the importance why we should never forget (and to pass it on to generations) those who fought during WW2, we packed carefully and travelled over to East Kirkby, the home of Just Jane. With just 30 minutes to go for Just Jane to commence her taxy run, Nikos rushed over carrying his camera, battery pack, some light equipment and of course myself. We hurried over to the rest of the TCS crew and it went all silent. “The raffle is about to begin” we heard and it all went quiet. “Salmon 339” called out the lady of the raffle! With absolute delight in her face, Margo shouted with joy “yay it’s me”. I was so happy for her and she went over to organisers. Seconds later I heard Alex say “I know what she’s gonna do” and then a TCS fan said to me “you deserve it, after everything you do for us and the RAF”. I still didn’t quite understand. The message then became clear, Margo pointed at me to come over and said “Nikos and Ted will take my place”… We could not believe I was getting on board the very aircraft we were just talking about, the men that flew it and the sacrifices they made.
Just Jane is Mk. VII Lancaster Bomber, built in April 1948 at Longbridge, which for those that don’t know was a car factory. Put together at Longbridge and took her apart and put on a trailer known as a “Queen Mary” and transported her to RAF Elmdon. Many of us have either from or landed at RAF Elmdon because it is in fact Birmingham International Airport. RAF Elmdon was where Just Jane first flew. She was intended to be part of the Tiger Force and fly in the far east in April 1945. So due to the climate of the far east, she is equipped with larger radiators and other modifications to cope with a warmer climate.
The fate of Just Jane did not intend for her to go to the far east at all but South Wales and stayed in storage until 1952. She was sold to Aero Naval, French Naval Aviation Service for £50,000 under the Western Union Agreement and went off to Morocco. She carried out Coastal and Border Surveillance in Morocco. In 1960 she set off to New Caledonia in the Pacific to carry out the same surveillance work.
By 1964, she was one of the last three surviving operational Lancasters. The Historic Aircraft Preservation Society, put in a request to the French Government to have the Lancaster when it finished its service. Not expecting confirmation that they could acquire Just Jane, but the were not expecting to pick it in Sydney, Australia. So they did just that, in 1965 they did their checks and took 9 days flying to get it back to the UK. Just Jane was put into a plan to fly her at airshows.
Just Jane’s next home was Blackpool she was laid to rest at a museum in Blackpool but sadly it went bust and put into auction. At the auction, the Panton brothers were present at the auction. Bidding didn’t go well as she didn’t meet her reserve. Lord Lilford purchased the Lancaster after the auction and allowed the RAF to borrow her as a gate guardian at RAF Scampton. The agreement was for 10 years but after this period was over, Fred and Harold Panton, had a discussion with Lord Lilford which then led to the agreed purchase for Just Jane. This is how she came to East Kirkby.
The Panton brothers wanted a Lancaster Bomber as a memorial to their older brother, Christopher who was a flight engineer for 433 Squadron in Halifax’s. During the war, on the night of the 30th-31st March 1944 he flew in one of the worst raid of WW2. He flew into Nuremberg, and they lost 94 aircraft were lost that night. Christopher Panton was in one of those Halifax’s lost and was sadly killed. So his brother wanted something to remember him by with a Lancaster BOMBER as a memorial along with other crew members who were lost.

Oii Oii Ladies, gents and teddy bears. Thank you so much for tuning in to this wonderful experience. Nikos and I could not help but think about the brave men who flew on bombing raids with literally no view…even if they had a view, it would have been dark. The rumbles, the noise, enemy flak, your rear gunner firing as you become aware of fighter aircraft…But we came to think that perhaps the mission kept them focused to think of the possibility of not returning home. It is very easy to be scared or try to imagine and think about what these brave men must have felt and yet, this was just a taxy ride in a non combat environment. I guess ultimately unless you’ve been in combat and focused on your mission and what you have seen could explain why 99% don’t ever talk about it. Many airmen or veterans of any trade that I’ve met, never really went into detail or spoke about it. LEST WE FORGET. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Wow Margo, that was so kind of you, and a very symbolic gesture if I may add. Following Nevilles videos, and now seeing Nikos & Ted in Just Jane, I can't help but think of all the Bomber Boys that made the ultimate sacrifice. Over 57,000 will be "forever young" צעירים לנצח as we say in Israel. We should honour & cherish their memory, never forget the terrible price to the veterans and their families. I feel that restoring these original war birds to the highest standards is very fitting to their memory.

A perfect example of "less is more". Funny how in the midst of battle, we get the most advances in medicine and engineering. As an Ex-structural maintainer/airframe fitter, I can confirm the Lancaster's airframe looks very well designed & optimized for the design loads. Looks minimalistic and fit for purpose. A work of art.

What an incredibly unique and special experience you had last weekend. We’re all so pleased you got to see inside Just Jane and have the taxi ride. It was a unique perspective to ride in the rear section. Margo is an absolute gem for gifting her raffle prize to you and Ted. Seeing this historical plane is a treat each and every year and I have contributed for the last 10 years towards the restoration fund. Fantastic footage and thanks for sharing the inside as I’ve always wondered what it’s like to be in a Lancaster. I bet you’re still on cloud nine after the weekend. The TCS family are all SO proud of you

I don’t think you pair realise how much you deserved that. First of all. Margo you are a special human being. The most generous and kind person I’ve ever come across. Thank you for giving Ted and Nikos that opportunity. You’ve all worked incredibly hard to grow this channel to what it’s become today. And you always make sure the information and the footage you bring us is perfect, respectful, honouring and just incredibly special. Claire Bear your camera work was awesome. Especially with such a short briefing! Being able to watch someone you admire do something you’ve always wanted to do, I’ve realised is more special than doing it yourself. Especially when that person and Bear do so much for the RAF, heads up charity and so much more. You should all be very proud of your achievements. I’m proud to be just a small part of it. And it’s was super special to share this day with you all

Probably the best value experience day available. From the welcome, ground briefing, aircraft tour, excellent lunch, listening to those engines start, and the taxi ride was superb. I was extremely lucky and was in the cockpit for my actual run. Feels odd to say that it was one of the most enjoyable days I have ever had. You have to respect the thousands that gave their lives in this aircraft and also the team at Just Jane who keep their memory going.

Hundreds of fresh solid rivets, new skin in modern AL2024 Alclad (the alloy wasn't yet invented back in the '40s), the smell of fresh zinc cromate. That Lancaster is looking as good, if not better, than the day she left the factory. Thank you so much to Neville for many years of documenting the rebuild process (above and beyond a D-check). Your footage has historical significance for future referance to methods and techniques in the 1940s for Lancaster and other period war birds. Fantastic work by all the techs, airframe, engines, electrics And of corse a big thank you to Nikos, Claire & our Squadron leader Ted🤟 48 thumping merlin cylinders, ooh yahh. Thanks also to Margo for buying lucky Salmon 339 (had to be Salmon, of course). What a generous soul to gift the winning ticket to Nikos and Ted. The last time you were all at East KIrkby I thought, wouldn't it be great if Nikos was able to take a taxi ride in Just Jane. Well it just goes to prove that dreams do come true, even if that dream is for someone else. Onwards and upwards, Ted.
