NV4500 knocking sound in all gears except 4th. Test drive and remove trans. 1996 dodge cummins 4x4

My 1996 dodge developed a knock noise from the transmission and it is knocking on all gears except 4th gear. When in 4th it's quiet and no noticeable issues. In all other gear there is a tapping/knocking sound. Fluid was full - actually slightly over filled as is recommended for these transmissions due to bearing failure concerns. Oil has a lot of metallic flake but other than the knock, everything sounded fine and was shifting normal. Only issue I was having was the noise. Started a trip and about 75 miles into the trip. Trans started knocking. Drove another 75 miles and noise kept getting louder the whole way. I decided to pull it to investigate.

Josue Delgado Serch NV4500 on dallas Craig’s list. Easy to find his adds. Here is a copy and paste from his add. I can tell you, he does good work. Mine already has over 10k on it and 1 year never had a single issue after getting a reman from him. Best price anywhere. I looked long and hard before going to him. He is hard to get a hold of at times because he has his hands in a transmission all the time so he will only respond when he has time and he is a busy dude. I ended up waiting out front while he finished putting top cover on. He does not speak great English and communication will make you think he is sketchy but he is legit. And a freaking master transmission mechanic. I admit, I had my concerns but after getting trans in and pulling load after load, he has earned my respect. I will go back to him next time for sure. This is a copy and paste below of his add.....your welcome. O by the way, he gives you a receipt and warranty paperwork. Cody Scott Yes, I figured it out and it sucked. Turns out after 262,000 miles the pilot bearing finally gave up and that allowed excessive movement of the input shaft causing the input shaft gear to break teeth. I'm not sure why but I also had damaged teeth on both the 5th gears. I ended up getting a $1,000 reman with warranty from a local shop in Dallas. Never thought about pulling trans to check the pilot but that's a great idea after truck reaches 200k. I think I could have prevented this by pulling trans and servicing the oil and installing new pilot. Iv been hauling with it pretty hard for 60k miles. It's had a hard life these last 5 years.
