NV4500 knocking sound in all gears except 4th. Part two. Truck is fixed. 1996 dodge cummins

After tear down, I found major gear damage and decided to replace the trans with a reman. I installed the reman and test drove. No more noise.
1996 dodge diesel test drive after trans install. I also built my own version of a tranny adapter to help lift my transmission more safely on install.

I HAD AN NV2500 WITH A KNOCKING NOISE. THE LOWER FRONT COUNTER SHAFT BEARING HAD BEEN RUN WITHOUT OIL AND IT GROUND OUT THE BEARING RACE UNTIL THE PLAY ALLOWED THE SHAFT TO JUMP APART FROM THE INPUT SHAFT. BUSTED GEARS EVERYWHERE AND IT ALL STARTED AS A," COULD YOU JUST PUT THE TRANS BACK IN THE TRUCK?"

Frederick Trudel sounds like it could have possibly been caused by running low on oil. I hate when I run something low on oil or just plain out of oil and it cost me a bunch of money to fix. Iv done it enough times now that I’m paranoid about low oil. I overfill my manual transmissions and differentials just to make sure my bearings get plenty. I also park on clean pavement and check regularly for new leaks when I move my equipment.

Matthew Ros - funny you should ask. I talked to the guy who built it and he said just regular gear oil. I read the various forums for days and most folks swear by sincro stuff that’s super expensive. I just decided to dig through my cabinets and put in all the quarts of gear oil I had accumulated over the years. No two qts were the same so Iv got about 5 or 6 different oils in it and haven’t had a bit of trouble with it. Best it’s ever shifted. I don’t care about what everyone says. I was told for yeas not to run black diesel and never had an issue. I like be proving the nay sayers wrong.

Tow in Overdrive alot I'm guessing? IMHO Worst thing they ever did to the Cummins powered trucks was put 4:10's in them - I regeared mine to 3.55's so I could easily tow 50-60 mph in 4th (the strongest gear in a 4500 since it's straight through) on a hard/heavy pull and it's been happy ever since. I also have the large pilot spherical roller bearing pilot in mine due to reading about pilot bearing issues similar to what you had.

Gonecheenin I sure understand, I use to build the automatics at a dodge dealership and seen a lot of issues from OD towing. Especially when they run in and out of lock up. However I don’t believe it was an issue caused by towing in overdrive. I think it all started from a bad input shaft bearing and truck spent the last 60 plus thousand miles of it total 260k with the original trans, clutch and pilot bearing. So I figure it did pretty good. It’s had a hard last 60k. I’ll be happy if it give me another 60k.
