Nurturing Our Children’s Hearts Through Lifegiving Words | Sally Clarkson

In our increasingly digital age, it is more important than ever to make sure we are using our words to affirm and guide our children. In a world that tries to tell them who they are and what is important, it is our job as parents to encourage them toward virtue and faith. I am so pleased to bring you this conversation with Sally Clarkson. Through book writing, podcasting, and speaking, Sally uses her words to mentor a generation of young moms who want to give their children a life full of beauty, creativity, faith, and family. May you come away from this conversation with a renewed vigor for creating a verbal home that breathes life into the hearts of your children.
In this episode, we cover:
- What it means to have a verbal home and why it matters in this day and age
- How you can appoint times throughout your day, week, year to intentionally affirm your children
- Going beyond what we say and examining what is in our hearts
- Strategies for being truly present with your children and not getting sucked into distraction
- Protecting your family’s time in order to maximize opportunities for lifegiving conversation
- How prioritizing words can knit your family’s hearts together
- Considering boundaries around creating solely for your family’s benefit vs. creating to share with the world
- The importance of keeping work in its rightful place
- Getting on the same page as your spouse about the direction of your family

Lisa, I am SO happy to see your channel going in more of a Christian homemaking direction. It’s a blessing to see you wear your faith for all to see. It’s honoring to the Lord, and I pray He bless you in your faithfulness. I know not all of your audience is Christian, so you risk losing some. However, it’s evident that you are fearing the Lord and not man. ❤️ God bless you sister!

Four of our children are married adult Believers. We still have a sixteen year old at home. WORDS are so very important!! TIME is so very important!! Spend quality time talking, hugging, sharing smiles, giving words of praise to your children, kisses, good morning songs, night time chats, and young adult counseling to your 13 and up young adults. This takes time!! I quit all activities except church and a local homeschool group. We were home every evening for supper around the table. Sally is correct, if we don't engage our children with the Lord, and family time, they will turn to the culture for affirmation. I'm 55, and I've seen God's faithfulness through what we "gave-up" as parents. We lived on a modest low income, I didn't work, the children chose one short sport per year, and I didn't run to mom activities either and leave my family. What will it profit a man or woman, if we gain the whole world and lose our soul. ( Or our children's souls)💕

There are many of us who did all those things and our children still left the faith. Many many moms I know who homeschooled, lived simply, did all those things, but as young adults the culture captured them. We all still pray fervently for our young adults and continue to love and keep a good relationship, with faith that the Lord will bring them back. I think it’s good to encourage all you encouraged, it’s the best way to raise kids, but I think we need to be careful to not assume it’s a magic formula and our kids will be born again Christians if we follow the advice.

I LOVE Sally Carkson!!! Our homeschooling group traveled to her Whole Hearted Mothers conferences for years!! We watched her kids grow up. And we read Sally's books during our homeschool meetings. She is such a treasure. Our family used Our 24 Family Ways as our Bible study throughout the years. SO happy to see Sally on your podcast. She and her family are such a blessing to so many!

Sooo good lisa. This is exactly what I needed to hear. I am currently in the trenches with my family and a lot of the time our words are not always life giving. This gave me so much conviction as well as encouragement in how to have a life giving home and speak life into/over our children. Thank you and Sally for this chat ❤

So I do these with my son always. I am very verbally and physically affectionate. Always telling him how since childhood all I wanted was to be his mama. That he was and is a gift and I'm honored to be tasked to nurture and prepare him for the world. We always start the day with a mama bear hug and end it with a little cuddle and loving words. Kids need to feel loved unconditionally. Even when we have a rough moment, I repair and hug him and let him know that I love him no matter what and we reset. Mothering is the most wonderful honor and experience possible. It's hard and harder in today's cultural madness, but love them and raise them with your values and keep the family a priority and sacred. Can't imagine life without my child.

I am thinking the same thing. I love all of these podcasts, but this one is extra good! I have raised/am raising my kids this way and I've often felt like an odd parent because I won't give in to 'how things are done these days'-- choosing instead to follow my instincts of leading a home-centric life where we interact with and talk to our children all day long. Hearing this podcast makes me realize that others are raising their children in a similar way.

My mother was a word-speaker. Her words she has spoken over me my whole life still ring in my heart. She now has Alzheimer’s. Her smile and eyes now tell me the words she longs to say to me. Wise words spoken give life, value, belonging, and love. If there is nothing else that I do right in my mothering, I want my son to remember the words I speak to him every night as he is going to bed. I pray my words have the same heart-changing effect on him as my mother’s did on me. I have also been purposing to leave my phone in another room most of the day so our school time, reading time, cooking time, and talking time can be more focused. That is a true struggle, but I have been so convicted about that lately. Our time with our children is so fleeting! This was one of my favorite podcasts ever. Thank you both for this blessing.

It seems we need to be training the older children so they could step in and carrying on the chores. This way it gives Mama time with her babes. The alternative is the older child is spending more time and influence with the younger children.

I love that you asked such good questions and appreciated her input, Lisa. She does have a lot of wisdom. I feel like a lot of older women do, but a lot of younger women don’t seek out a real live mentor, someone who has walked the path before. Whether it is your own mother, a wise woman from church, neighbor, etc. God gave us older women to include in our lives (not just ones we see on the internet or read about in books). There are a lot of older women with a lot of great insights to share and they are waiting for you to ask them to coffee, or come and talk while you fold clothes! Or call and talk with them on the phone. Great interview!! ❤️

Hi Lisa! I like Sally. but lisa, you have influenced me a lot, raising kids, good marriage, and simple and beautiful home making. I must say Huge thank you to you, your content and your family! I disagree a bit with Sally. She said she didn’t want to get famous because of the exposure of kiddos. I totally disagree. I mean, for those people like me, who likes you and appreciate your lifestyle, it does good thing to the kids. I have two daughters, younger than ruthie and Johanna. They always play pretend and called themselves Ruthie and Johanna, who sews, decorates, and cook. They are happy to see other girls like them help around the house. It’s beautiful! Truly beautiful! I said Thanks so many times to Lisa inside my heart when I saw the beauty of home making which you’ve encouraged me. So, lisa, you have done beautiful work!

Some notes: When children replay what they hear in their heads, they might hear what we said to them… that’s why it’s important to tell them blessings…which helps form them and breathe light into them as adults…. God can use parents as these good tools. We can be intentional to do this daily. It needs to dwell in our hearts starting with what we do with our personal time. Whatever we rehearse inside of ourselves is what our children are drawing from.

I really needed to hear this podcast. I feel so convicted, but liked what you said Lisa, "Encouraging". Trying to look at that more than the shame of not being good at this. Thank you for this... 💙

When ya'll were talking about the pizza and taking a photo, my thought was while you were photographing it, it got cold...and the moment was lost. Love this episode. We are selfish in wanting you to share it all with us.
