The Whole and Healthy Family: Helping Your Kids Thrive in Mind, Body, and Spirit | Jodi Mockabee

While there are many things that make us different as mothers, there is one thing we all have in common: we want to see our children thrive. Homeschooling mother of five, Jodi Mockabee, joins me today for a conversation about her new book, The Whole and Healthy Family, where she walks through how we can support our kids’ well-being in mind, body, and spirit. We covered so much ground in this conversation-from parenting babies all the way up to older teens-that moms in all stages will benefit from listening in. I feel like Jodi and I could have continued talking forever, and I hope you feel like you are sitting down with us having a chat about all the things that make motherhood so beautiful and challenging and worth it.
In this episode, we cover:
- What it means to support your child in mind, body, and spirit
- How to approach extracurricular activities in a way that doesn’t overtake your schedule
- Noticing and adapting to each child’s individual personality, strengths, and weaknesses
- A discussion on picking your battles in parenting based on what matters most to you
- How parenting can change from the oldest children in a family to the youngest
- Beginning the transition of teens spending more time outside the home
- Creating time to spend with each individual child in a large family
- The surprising ways that simplifying your home can bring peace to your family
- Recognizing and addressing the mental clutter that comes from technology

So many NUGGETS in this one and I love the transparency of integrating your faith in this one, and the desire to raise godly children who have strong faith! That is the center for sure, and so many families prioritize the sports and activities and the real foundation gets put on the back burner, the other things are good, but like you both mentioned, sometimes you have to let some of the 'good things', even church functions and gatherings, go, in order to give God and family the focus! Well done young ladies of God! I'm very thankful for you both! Praying you continue the fight to share such things and give others hope and encouragement.

I neeeded to hear her say that about the family & church. Because I’ve been wrestling this trying to do what is most loving and best and man it’s not easy. You get a lot of judgement if you want to go assemble at church but you’re in a season with your littles that you are teaching boundaries & how to sit still and how to obey (my kids are 1,2,and just turned 4). The 4 year old is finally getting it! But man it’s just hard and I don’t feel like this perspective is very widely accepted or understood but I 100% agree because I’m in the thick of it. I can’t wait til we can become more involved in our local assembly but man id love some encouragement while we’re trying yet unable many times. I find that encouragement is highly lacking

Congratulations on your podcast growth! The topics I’ve loved the most are where you just talk about your home life! A podcast on how your childhood shaped your family to be close knit? So many families don’t get along with their siblings or are jealous of them. You guys are a great example of how a family should treat each other.

Congratulations, you work so hard. I love your podcast. Remember, your babies might not remember everything you have down for them, but it shapes their personal confidence in themselves and their personalities. Also, these memories are yours and your husband's...I remember and miss all my babies when they were small, it was my favorite time.

I constantly struggle with the same issue. I was brought up with "go, go, go" and I raise my kids on "go, go, go" and it's so challenging. I can't "ungo" 😭😭😭 myself. I feel like I feed from other moms, my kids wishes and thought that they must do something and it has turned into pure drive around every night eat on the road chaos. Is it really worth it? I don't think.

I really enjoyed listening to you ladies. I'm in the stage of trying to teach my kids to do all the homestead and household duties, but the oldest is already 18 and working full-time! Then he has friends and youth group so he has really gotten away from chores at home. We don't do dates either, but we do short town trips together or do chores one-on-one.

I really appreciated and benefited from this conversation. I too looked at Waldorf Education when my children were younger, but I learned that Rudolph Steiner claimed to be a clairvoyant. I hope my information is wrong, but as a Christian, that really bothered me. I find that Charlotte Mason gives just as much helpful information.

Hi, Lisa. An idea for the podcast. Not necessarily home making related, but Christian children education. Christian scientists guests explain about Earth formation (vs other theories) dinosaurs, its age, etc. It would be so helpful to have Christian understanding of science. Thanks, Emma

Great podcast- thanks for the insight! I will disagree with one thing though- homeschool and sports are not as uncommon as you may think. I was homeschooled because I was a high level tennis player who traveled to many tournaments (and couldn’t be in regular school) and I know a ton of my competitors also were-! Just food for thought when you say homeschoolers typically aren’t into organized sports :) I homeschool my kids and we very much prioritize time in our day for the sports they love. ❤

A lot of us are conditioned into being human doings, not human beings, so we don't allow time and space for us to just "be". I started home-teaching my kids because I wanted to be able to induce their biochemical feedback with more self-love, meditation time, breathwork, etc., because it wasn't anything they'd learn in school. We call it "home-learning in homeostasis". They're learning through experience, not reading someone else's experience, and they're able to regulate their body for good feedback, not chemicals of stress. They don't participate in sports because the "teamwork" aspect during competition produces more cortisol and adrenaline than their body needs and it's more than they'd produce in a natural environment, unless they were being chased by a predator, which has never happened. Nature is collaborative, not competitive, but we're conditioned into competitive environments and beliefs, unnecessarily. Then we're never taught how to switch off the sympathetic nervous system and engage the parasympathetic nervous system. That means most of us are living in the chemicals of stress, unable to see our environment for what it is, without the emotional attachments because the emotions are feeding the biochemical feedback. It's a loop.

Greetings! I am a musician and have been in recording studios that have used plenty of synthetic sound proofing materials on their walls vs. natural fibers. Vibration/sound frequency via plastics vs. more natural materials in theory makes sense, but I think the better question would be, what is the texture & density of the object or objects. The other question that I would ask about the natural fibers vs. plastics use is, what is the philosophy and spiritual view being presented.
