NURSING IN THE UK No. 18| I Gotta Do More Bank Shifts

Once upon a time, I came to my senses. This is a follow-up video to my previous post about my salary while working as a Band 5 Nurse in the UK.
Last year, I wasn't really motivated to work more than the minimum. But because of several changes to our current living circumstances, I realized I DO need to work more. And I think it has paid off. Watch the entire thing and find out why.
NOTE: The June private list was done past the cut-off date for pay (which was then on the 23rd) so I got paid on July. This is why my extra income was £400+.

does working in the OR allows you to receive a higher pay than those who work in the wards or other areas of the hospital?

One could only wish 😂. I think the advantage here is we get paid double when doing private lists. For the wards, the pay is the same.

The minimum working hours for all full time nurses is 37.5 per week. I don't know how much ward nurses do, but as you can see in this video, I had been doing more than the minimum. I'm sure some ward nurses are doing the same. :)

That depends on the trust. In my current trust, they only hire nurses with theatre background. Once hired, they work as supernumerary til they complete all scrub competencies. This may take 6 months to 1 year.

hi,, hows the workload in recovery compare to theatre nurse?

  • @JetfromRecovery

Did you mean scrub? They're both 1:1 (nurse:patient) ratio but sometimes in recovery, it can become 1:2 especially due to bed shortages and understaffing. For anaesthetics, it's always 1:1 although sometimes, they help us in recovery. :)

You can do banks in areas where you have competencies. So as long as you have recovery competencies, you can do some shifts.

In my trust, patients stay in recovery for only 30 minutes unless there's an unresolved issue or bed shortage in the wards. On average, I would have 4 to 5 patients in a long shift.
