Nuclear armed states are growing more dependent on nukes, says think tank | DW News

As Russia ramps up nuclear threats amid the war in Ukraine, there's been a surge in spending among nuclear-armed states on weapons of mass destruction. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has released a report, warning nuclear weapons haven't played such a prominent role in global relations, since the Cold War.

We have to be honest on arms control. It was my American government beginning with George W. Bush that began to take the US out of the arms controls treaties in the 2000s. And it continued through Obama, Trump and Biden to the point where Russia finally gave up on adgering to the last treaty.

Arms control with Russia doesn't matter anymore because Russia doesn't abide by its treaties or agreements. The last of the agreements will expire and an all-out arms race will break out with Russia. Red China has already got quite a headstart. Russia had already removed all tactical devices and delivery systems. Ukraine didn't have the codes for what remained. Also, most delivery systems were ICBMs, which would have had to be completely altered to reduce their ranges. The US also gave Ukraine an extra $2.5 billion, something not provided to other countries like Kazakhstan. Ukraine couldn't have borne the high costs associated with maintenance. Ten years after its independence, the Ukrainian economy had shrunk and was smaller than it had been when it was part of the Soviet Union. It's hard to believe the risks Europeans are taking for a country like Ukraine.

China's blue water navy isn't even close to the US. Half of those raw numbers are primarily coastal vessels that will be useless for anything other than harassment in the South China Sea. China has very little that can threaten the US; or respond to the inevitable naval blockade if they do enter into a war. It's not inaccurate to call the US the largest military in the world. Tactical nukes are eventually going to be used - likely by Russia. However, keep in mind a tactical nuke is fairly limited in its capability and many have less destructive power than many big conventional bombs - like the USA big bertha - outside of making the area it hits radioactive for years to come - that is the big issue. Not to mention that a red line for the world would have been crossed and will begin a scramble for everyone to get nukes if only for a 'defensive' purpose. But once that happens, future wars will see tactical nukes used. That means the West needs to find a deterrent to the use of tactical nukes - by deterrent I don't mean more nukes, but nuke killers... seek and destroy weapons and/or 'nuclear dome protection' of some type. Better to face reality while also trying to prevent any nuclear proliferation than not be prepared if we fail. It's like climate change... everyone screaming we are changing the climate... good chance we are adding or exacerbating to climate change, which is always changing regardless of human input for various reasons outside our control. Best to adapt to the changes as well and not look trying to turn back the clock - which we just can't do., even if we scream all day and night about the problem.
