Between fear and deterrence: Can Europe defend itself? | To the point

Destroyed cities, power plants and critical infrastructure: many areas in Eastern Ukraine are in ruins. And an end to the Russian aggression is nowhere in sight. In the midst of the war, Ukrainian President Zelensky is lobbying for help to rebuild his country. He’s asking Germany for aid, but also for more weapons. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is promising further support but wants to avoid an escalation of the conflict. Germany and NATO, however, must be ready to resist a war if things go wrong. We ask: Between fear and deterrence: Can Europe defend itself?
Our guests:

Roman Goncharenko (DW)

As a Finnish woman I do think it us outrageous that the border countries to Russia are the one’s who seem to be the only European countries who have to act as a shield for rest of Europe. I do hope Germany and all other countries step up militarily ASAP. I do not understand countries where citizens do not require their armies to be strong enough do defend even their own soil… pS. What is wrong with conscripton ? In Finland is has only a positive effect on the whole society. It brings young men from different parts of the country, different backgrounds and different socioeconomical standing TOGETHER, at a vulnerable age, it brings structure and self confidence for those who lack it and boys grow to become men. It is truly a glue that keeps society together and keeps patriotism at a healthy level. And it is very cost effective and really the most reliable way to have a good defense force. And yes women can take part too, but i would say our “ military” last for many years and it is called pregnancies and family leave taking care of babies and toddlers, which make a huge gap in our working careers.

Same Germany and Europe different crisis. Often Europeans lecture America to remember the lessons of WW2 especially her delayed participation in the fight against authoritarianism and evil. Like Germany and most of Europe today, America was not a party to the war in Europe for years and provided millions of dollars in military support, equipment and ammunition to the United Kingdom. After America declared war on the Axis allies, committed troops and suffered hundreds of thousands of dead American Soldiers, evil was destroyed and millions of people were set free. For over 10 years, Europe watched Russia invade Georgia and Ukraine, killed Ukrainians and annexed lands while radically cutting their defense budgets, forces and manufacturing capacity. For 75 years every American president criticized Europe's over dependence on America and insufficient efforts to defend herself. Today, Germany still imports Russian LNG and oil and needs 5 years to stand up a brigade in the Baltics and requires America to transport them their. The sad reality of human history, those enjoying the best lifestyles must suffer war first hand to motivate them to do anything about evil on their doorsteps.

Europe has the potential to defend itself against Russian aggression, but it will require significant investments in military capabilities and a united political will to do so. Russia believes Europe is divided and lacks the resolve to stand up to its aggression. If Europe had been more united and resolute in mobilizing its military potential at the start of the war in Ukraine, the conflict could have been brought to a swifter conclusion. However, post-Cold War complacency has atrophied Europe's defense capabilities. Ultimately, European governments must be willing to pay the price for rearmament, and populations must be ready to defend their homelands. Making it clear to Russia that Europe has both the capability and will to resist aggression will be crucial. Without a credible deterrent, the cost of containing a resurgent and revisionist Russia will only grow.

ukraine joining nato in any near future depends solely on the fact whether the usa wants to be dragged into direct conflict in the very near future or not. So usa will not hurry at least for few decades and wait for current crop of ukrainian leaders to retire from politics. The ukrainians have shown that they have it all to drag the americans into direct war with russia so the americans will handle the ukrainians carefully and not provide ukraine membership of nato.

@@jesusaguilar4585 It depends, but the answer might still be yes. Even in the horrifying scenario of Trump wining and then blocking any USA contribution to NATO, Europe still has far more capacity of everything (industrial production, people, international relations, finance, technology, etc.) compared to Russia. Enough to overshadow Russia several times over. The major issues are unity and political will. An Europe that lacks unity can be picked apart piece by piece. An Europe that doesn't have the political will to fight back will just lose. Just like the USA militarily now acts as glue between Japan and South Korea, they did the same for NATO. And I would argue that, in the post-Soviet period, playing this role was more important to NATO than the military might itself that the USA has (a majority of NATO's military might).

From the positive point, every country is back to support Ukraine because they realize that Putin threat is real, and they must deter as much as they can before the threat come to their own land but, on the other hand, every country in Europe is preparing to defend themselves , even Germany consider themselves that they need time to strengthen defense until 2029 , let say 2031 for every Europe countries to prepare themselves The question is "What will happen when every Europe country is well defensed and ready for the war?" The main objective of supporting Ukraine is to deter Putin threat as much as possible so that Europe has time to strengthen defense. but now Europe is Ready for the war ... it will become the time they let go of Ukraine ...
