The "Physician's assistants" makes me cringe as we are now owned by physicians and our name does not have an apostrophe. I've worked with both NPs and PAs when I was a pediatric MA before PA school.

with PA school being more competitive nowadays, I think it will take longer to gather PCE rather than for nursing.

Firstly to become a Physician Assistant (PA), you must obtain a bachelors degree from an undergraduate education. This is non-specific but largely people tend to choose degrees in the sciences as the prerequisites for PA school are heavily science based (Bio 1,2 Chem 1, 2 Organic 1, Biochemistry 1, Genetics, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology 1, 2). Next all PA schools require direct patient care hours to apply. The AVERAGE ACCEPTED APPLICANT has ~2000 hrs. Examples of obtaining direct patient care hours is through Nursing, Athletic Training, Physical therapy, medical scribe, etc. Once accepted to PA school there is two years minimum. PA's are taught under the medical model which is the same model of medicine as Physician's. This is different then the nursing model which only nurses follow, such as NP's. The curriculum for PA school is a similar curriculum to accelerate doctors during World War 2. PA's first year is called the didactic phase. This is heavy book learning of medicine. The second year is called the clinical year. This is where PA's get 2,000 hrs in multiple specialties (Primary care, Orthopedics, OB/GYN, General Surgery, etc). To draw a comparison Doctors have two didactic years and 2 clinical years. Follow similar frame work for learning medicine but PA's have a generalist approach and MD's have a more thorough approach. After completing all of the requirements during PA school, PA students must pass the PANCE exam to become certified. The PANCE exam is a nationally certified exam. PA must retake the exam every 10 years to re-certify to practice as a PA. PA's are required to get 100 hours of CME units, which is similar to physicians. PA's and NP's have similar lengths in terms of schooling and I can delve more in depth of the differences if you like.

@@jannat544 PA school will afford you with the training required to work in dermatology. Dermatology jobs are highly competitive and largely you will need to do a clinical in the second year to land a job. However to answer your question directly, the requirement to work in dermatology as a physician assistant is graduating PA school and passing your boards.

What's the difference between a Nurse Practitioner and MD if NPs can do everything a physician can do? And if so then why does medical school take >=8 years post-bac vs 2 years for NP? MD sounds like a waste of time. And why would a hospital pay an MD 3x what it pays NPs if they do the same thing?

NP's follow the patient centered as opposed to MD's and PA's that follow the disease centered approach to medicine. The patient centered approach is looking at issues that arise from a persons lifestyle, such as social and environment factors that arise and ultimately effect a person's overall health. The medical approach is the disease/pathology approach that looks at the disease and it's overall effect on the human body and how it might be treated through the scientific approach, not the sociological approach such as nursing model. Ultimately it is worth the time and the money to become an MD or PA as the education is what is most important when treating a patient. Confidence in what you do and having a firm brick and mortar approach to learning is most important as it's all fun and games till you are actually responsible for the care of a seriously ill patient.

@@pestleandmortarmedical5400 i really don't think it is accurate anymore to say physicians don't look at the social and economic factors. Sure 20 years ago there was a medical model but that had greatly changed. Physicians are taught very differently now and dont just focus on the medicine. I think it is an injustice to say so.

@@yourwitchbesti interesting...not saying you're wrong, but I also live in GA and know of quite a few NP's that call themself doctor if they've earned a doctorate levels degree. Same with PA's with a DMSc degree. They always follow up with their title of course. Also, our MD's/DO's have gotten really good at introducing themselves as "physicians" for the sake of educating the population on the differences between degree and job. I feel like we as healthcare professionals put so much effort into owning a degree and not directly addressing the problem of WHY it's confusing to patients. We can teach the to manage their chronic illnesses, but we can't mention that all doctors are not PHYSICIANS. Sorry, this post wasn't supposed to go past the first sentence...😖
