I was a RN, Now a Physician Assistant for 18 yrs. I can tell you the main difference in PA or NP- PA's take the Medical Boards written by doctors and recert like doctors every 6 years.. PA's can switch from different areas of medicines from Er to Primary care to OB to pediatrics to Surgery to Dermatology or any other specialty since we rotate through all/most areas.. Nurse Practitioners are under the board of Nurses and exam written by Nurses. They take the test 1 time and do not ever recert. However, They get certified in one field such as Primary care, Pediatrics Ob/gyn or Psychology. If they want to switch to another specialty from the one they are certified in they have to go back to get certified in the specialty. Also, a lot of the education is 90% online for Nurse Practitioner. PA's are on call and must be present for clinicals/ classroom and hospital with 1-2 months in each specialty, This is major difference. PA's are a Master degree. To get a doctorate, we can bridge to Medical school to become a MD. Both Np's and PA's are great providers and really needed. For the person who has a family, the NP is much more doable online than the PA education,. However, you must be a Rn first as you have stated.
