People who have been in mountains and wilderness know what a companion means in your trip to those rugged trains...

Watching this is my "vacation" as now I'm 73. No money, an old vehicle, and my wonderful tent is gone. So many memories of past trips to wilderness areas with my kids and my grand-daughter. "If wishes were horses...."

In 2011, at age 59, I did a solo float trip down the Alatna river from the headwaters to the Koyukuk river. Total 184 miles and i never saw another human. It took me 10 days. It is the highlight of my outdoor career. Now I'm 70 and considering another trip, thanks to your video.

What an epic journey! Simply proves that nothing can stop you from doing the things you love. There's a sense of calmness yet adventurous feel throughout the video. And what a great friendship these two have, for being able trust each other for so long. Absolutely moved. Thanks National Geographic for sharing us this wonderful story.

We too are moved by this traveling duo's friendship, Azliana! Jim and Tip may not have always agreed on which path to take, but they've developed a unique trust as travel companions of 40 years.

These guys are old but you would NEVER know it. They have such youthful spirits. Oh to age gracefully.

I went on a NOLS trip canoeing on the noatak and hiking in brooks range and watching this brought me back to tears. They captured the pure beauty and more. Thank you for bringing awareness to my favorite place on earth!!

May you have many more trips with many more fun and happy memories

The sense of adventure and exploration, beautiful place as well. Can relate to what these guys talk about a lot. Life goals right here ☺

The adventure is always out there, you can reach it whenever you are able to go out; however, what we have seen here is found and having someone to walk through these part of life, which I think it is what they cherish the most. I would love someone to share my life just like them, how lucky they are!

This video is heartwarming, inspiring, beautifully captured and nourishment for the wild soul. I had a lump in my throat 20 minutes after watching it. Spending time in wild places with dear friends is one of the greatest experiences this side of heaven. NatGeo, I was also very impressed by the videographer who I forgot was there most of the time. Five stars from every bend of the river.

Such a wonderful story...would have been nice for Nat Geo. to do a docu. series...this reminds one how short life really is and to NEVER take any opportunity for granted...Godspeed Gentlemen, I look forward to hearing more about your trip!

They are amongst few of those who LIVED till their 80's. And not just making it or surviving it to their 80's..

I would love to have a friend to be with me my whole life like that.

Wow! Stumbled onto this video, what a pleasurable surprise

My daughter and I flew out of Bettles to a small lake at the headwaters of the North Fork of the Noatak....hiked for about 10 days through and below Gates (Frigid Crag and Boreal Peak) and then picked up a canoe that had been left for us and finished the rest of the trip back to Bettles. Trip of a lifetime. Also have been to Auyuittiq National Park on Baffin Island, hiking the Weasel River to its summit and return.

Very inspiring tale of canoeing and friendship, bringing these two friends back together again and sharing their love of adventure. "Just to live" and these two men have done it well.

Nice to complement your life in the practice of your hobby after retirement

nice. im 26 and going to start spending some time out in the river. i have always enjoyed being out in nature but have rarely had the opportunity.

Jim and Tip's 40 years of experience have definitely seasoned them for this Arctic adventure!

Jim and Tip's enduring friendship and appreciation for nature are truly inspiring! We're certain they have more stories to tell from the over 30 trips they've taken together.

How awesome is that yes river's are beautiful I should know we live near one my granddaughter's name and you get to see natures beautiful sights :) !

Continuing to make life an adventure at that age and to be wise about that process is an act to inspire. Awesome video.
