See the Quiet Beauty of Farm Life on the Scottish Isles | Short Film Showcase

In the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, life on the Isle of Harris has been largely influenced by the practice of crofting, a small-scale agricultural tradition that has been passed down for generations. In this short film by Joya Berrow, follow the quiet life of crofter Donald John Macinnes as he tends to his sheep and cows in the staggeringly beautiful landscape.

Crofting is a unique agricultural practice passed down generations in this part of Scotland. If you were a part of this community, do you think you would be able to uphold this physically demanding tradition? Why or why not?

As much as I love this, as a local (inner Hebrides) my community has already been so affected by rampant unregulated tourism (thank you Harry potter), so there's parts of my country I'd probably cry if I saw a tour bus arrive in. Big up BBC alba on here!

I learned to love the Scottish accent but my first experience with their articulation was unexpected. A fisherman said "It's me torrn to shucka pun." After much research and queries I discovered that what the fisherman had said was, "It's my turn to shake a pan," meaning it was his turn to cook on the boat that night. Lol.

*passes a trophy* some people, especially hearing impaired or people who have difficulty understand their language in other accents might not be able to understand. I'm a kiwi who has been to Scotland and yes, some people have very thick scottish accents that are hard to understand in real life

Absolutely - subtitles/closed captions of course are there (and always should be) for the hearing impaired or anyone that needs them. My point was that it would be nice to be able to choose whether to see them or not on screen for those of us who can understand what he is saying as I feel it takes away from the beautiful cinematography and story.

You do realise that if those cows where not eaten they would never exist any way I think I would rather have a life and then be eaten than have no life at all plus they have had a better live than any wild cattle remember the have had acsses to supplementary feed and acsses to health care also cattle farmed in that way helps A keep the grass and Heather healthy which allows them to take In carbon from the air and store it in the soil which helps fighte climate change and B helps crate habitats for rare birds including the corn crake
