    I agree the presets a lot of them are more "metalic" which is just the style of the presets. You can make it sound as warm as you want but you have to adjust it.

    Yeah I found that, dude. I was new to synths so I had to spend some time with the manual but it paid off. In fact, it was part of the fun!

    To get rid of the metalic sound try using the drift function on the oscillators, set the phase to free. Then even though the pulse width isn't effective with a saw wave or other conventional waves if you change it when you turn up the 2nd oscillator you will hear a difference maybe doing this and trying out different settings, it will start to sound warmer. Hope this helps.

    Ⓜ️My Friend i totally agree with you, I had the same experience with my Mininova. At one point i tried the VTL001 sound bank made by the synthcloud guys. It is precisely workout 128 pieces amazing patch bank! Definitely worth it, you will be surprised how your Mininova can sounds! I had same a case with my Novation X-station too. Factory patches was boring and flat, not shown that instrument real power. Upgraded with the Jamiroquai patch bank that synth turned to a real beast too!

    This is a synthesizer, remember that. Presets will be factory tuned & it's totally up to you to sculpt them in ways that you like. Can't expect all of the real work to be done by someone else..

    @@ASAPJermz Well said. Like mostly people, I'm not much of a sound designer. And I didnt read the manuals at I wanted to tinker around with sounds until I come up with a masterpiece. That's the lazy way of figuring things out.... And usually ends in poor results. If the presets aren't awesome straight out the box, most folks get discouraged and start bashing the synth. I to have the mininova and at one point I wanted to resale it. But I've taken time and learned some thangs. Now I'm happy that I bought it.

    Creat your own sound, and you'll hear warm sounds, there are. Presets only are metalizer because this is a analog modelise synth. Or take FM synth one, there this is hot warm

    Max Tilman I noticed he mentioned he doesn’t like the presets & decided to use other people’s presets. There’s no mention of building his own patches. Most of these presets are geared toward the FM sound & dubstep. I say take the time to build your own patch lol. He may need to do what I did, buy an analog poly synth with knob per function, learn how to use each parameter, study synthesis, watch the old 80’s 3 part series of the 5 most common waveforms & 7 main components of a synthesizer ( KZread: Intro to Synthesis). Make notes as you go & when you’re finished read the notes over & over. Hardwire synthesis to your brain & no longer will you ever use a preset patch. Someone who knows what they’re doing can & will make a crappy synth sound good.

    Just got mine. I agree completely. It sounds like cheap speakers. Somehow it is constantly tinny. Even if it has a bunch of features the sound is lackng. I bought it for my 6 year old son for his bday so I think it will be excellent as a first synth.

    @@nochan99 have you made your own patches or anything? idk if a synth like this is uhhhhh Great for a 6 year old(I'd think maybe a volca? or two, for less than the cost of a MiniNova? since theyre very easy to have some fun with) rather than a full digital synth like this. If you don't really have any experience with synths, buying this and not trying to learn how it works will ensure that you have a bad time with it.

    I completely agree with your point. It sounds like the sound is going through a plate reverb or something, all the time. Or like the DSP of a metal tube or container. And it's very annoying. I've also got the Microkorg S and XL+ and the Alesis Micron, and like you said, they sound much warmer in every patch.

    it can sound literally however you want lmfao. Use the big instruction book that came with it, for real. I doubted it at first, but it took a bunch of time, read through the book, and messed around with the connected software, and its really surprisingly easy to make a beautiful (or ugly, harsh, warm, cold, whatever you want) patch to exactly as you conceptualize it. I think its a pretty remarkably powerful standalone synth engine for its form factor, but sitting down, doing your work, and making an effort to understand how the system works truly lets you make some wonderful things.

    you could send it through some kind of pedals or a multi-effects unit and alter the EQU and filter it in some way ... perhaps have a general way to tone down the metallic sound (you probably already considered that but that would be what I'd try)

But I also saw a video where it was passing through big sky styrmon reverb & it was sounding awesome & warm. Do you think processing it through outboard FX can mellow down that metallic character you are taking abut?

  • @System-1541

    @System-1541

    6 жыл бұрын

    It can. If the patch is set to a lowpass filter you can back off the hashness and then run it through effects to get nice sound. Personally I like to edit sounds so I typically make my own mellow patches rather than running it through external effects (it has awesome ones on-board). There are more harsh sounds then mellow so if you want something to use the presets from maybe consider a microkorg, jd-xi or something similar;)

  • @Bareego

    @Bareego

    @@System-1541 I'm running my Ultranova (has same sound engine I think) through a Strymon Bluesky and it helps with getting a more spacious sound. I did find that many of the preset sounds do sound metallic, but if you spend some time to learn how to change some of the parameters, work with the EQ filter and such it can sound quite warm to me, but it does take some work. So if you're a person who rather just uses the presets without much change I'd rather get a different synth. The Arps are great though.

    i'd say the effects are what makes it sound metallic cos the raw oscillator sounds and the filter dont sound metallic to my ears. bear in mind though that if you have 3 oscillators going at once you need to have the volume of them set at 40 or lower because its easy to end up with clipping which can end up sounding metallic. if you have 2 oscillators going then you wanna set them at 60 or lower. the sound is still digital and precise but 2 ways you can make it sound warm: 1. subtle and fast sample and hold to each oscillators pitch with a seperate lfo for each osc. 2. for a warmer 24db filter run 2 12db filters in series with a small amount of valve drive on each, and offset the cutoff of the 2 filters by a small amount.

    I use a stereo 10 band graphic equalizer on my to punch up the sound. I over-drive the equalizer to get that warm distortion too by boosting any frequency that needs the warmth and reducing the other. The only reasons I will not buy MiniNova is because of menu programming and lack of panning oscillators.

    I have one and initially loved it but the one thing that really got to me is that AWFUL spongey keyboard. I got it partly for what it can do as a self contained synth ...with a vocoder and mic! But I also wanted to use it as my main controller ...but that spongeyness is just intolerable.

    i had the same impression! It always had this touch of metallic-sound to me... I think a big part of it is because of the reverb-effect sounding really cheap and metallic - but nevertheless i still had this taste that most patches have the same metallicness to it. My conclusion was, that it was never designed for those kind of sounds. The Pads, Leads/Syncs, Stacks, Arpeggiators sound fantastic. Everything that needs this digital 80s-Vibe or some clean Dancy-Sounds. But it cant sound warm or "fat". Thats the other issue i had. I can tweak how much i want - i never got a good fat Bass-Sound out of it. It mostly gets kind of washed out in the lower octaves. I thinks it's just not designed for that sound so they dont interfere with the BassStation 2. Btw the BassStation 2 sounds incredible! Its exactly this warm-analouge-subtractive sound that i missed on the MiniNova.
