Always been disappointed that Nintendo just does not do anything with the OST's. Nothing on spotify, nothing downloadable legally. There's a reason why Bootleg Ocarina of Time OST and other official Zelda OST's bootleg vinyl releases sell for so damn much and are extremely desired. Even the "inspired by" releases sell out immediately from Rozen & Theophany. The sheer demand and love for the series is insane and always makes me pretty sad when Nintendo doesn't let Koji Kondo's work shine.

It's such a shame that the official CD releases were exclusive to Japan and in limited supply. I can go on iTunes and buy the soundtrack of Escaflowne, an anime from the '90s, but I can't buy the soundtrack of BOTW.

It's something that pisses me off to. It's kinda weird too. Nintendo produces such great products but doesn't really use them properly. It's no wonder that Nintendo has a giant justified intellectual piracy problem.

Only people who played it as a kid on the N64 think that way. I first played it on the 3DS and it is by far my least favorite 3D Zelda. I don't even like this game, to be honest. Back in the day it was awesome but it aged soooo bad...

Since I've played it on my 3ds ive had a 1-2 year ritual where i go back to the game from the start and play it again. Now is around that time, and I never actually beat the first dungeon in Master Mode yet. Here I go.

I got ocarina of time when I was 10, right after moving across country. I had no friends, didn't know anyone. I got oot for Christmas and just absolutely fell into it. I can't hear any of the songs without getting a whole flood of emotion

I was 18, when I had a job, meaning I could buy my own N64, everyone else got Playstations, ocarina of time was in my in my first selection bought, along with Goldeneye and Mario 64.. I spend so long, weeks, exploring every pixel and mystery of Hyrule, forever burning the soundtrack into my soul.. there is no game s.t that's ever done the same.. Mario, almost.. but never so strongly.. the majick is real.. 🥰

Crazy how Koji Kondo sounds so much like a British girl

Ocarina's title theme is one of the most beautiful Zelda songs out there, but I've never played the original Zelda, and when you played the flute song I literally got chills.

I grew up with Twilight Princess, so it's title screen is the most emotionally resonant to me. I always liked how it had the gentle choir to match Wolf Link's howl before a snipbit of Midna's theme plays for the final notes. If you don't go to the save file screen after that, you get a traditional advertisement that plays a special theme to a montage of the entire adventure waiting for you. I think my favorite song in this game is Sacred Grove for how immersive it is. The player may be lost, but it's comforting to hear Saria's theme as you play a game of tag with Skull Kid. By the end of that segment, I didn't want to leave. My only gripe with Sacred Grove is how it sounds a little too similar to Chrono Trigger's "Secret of the Forest" by Yasunori Mitsuda which was composed first. I think the idea that the music has been playing long before you came along and will continue to play after you leave is really cool, I won't forget it so thanks for making this video.

It does? Funny. The nopon village from xenoblade chronicles 1 has an identical melody you could do with the skull kids in oot; only the last note shifts too much for it to be possible in oot to replicate, but the first 7? They are exactly the same. I'm not sure how many variations of notes there are for the mini game, but I _distinctly_ remember that one because it felt like a proper song compared to everything else.

The only thing better than a video essay is a video essay about Zelda music. These games soundtracks mean so damn much to me I think about them every day. They were all I had downloaded on my mp3 player as a kid and I always go back to them to relive going camping and playing in the woods as a kid.

In regards to the concept of “otherworldly”, the track “Inside the Deku Tree” is one of my favorites and has that strong sense of wonder that pushes you to explore the unknown place. I love that they reused it for other mysterious areas in the game too

This theme is also sampled from an Album called „otherwordly“. What we hearing is magic and the approach of it is Really interesting. There is a KZreadr a he Analyses the meaning behind curtain Zelda themes! Really nice Channel. I recommend it.

The title screen music is what everyone remembers when they think of the great music in OoT, and rightly so. But Shiek's Theme will always be my favourite. The song that really takes me back to being a kid, learning about myself and the world through zelda.

Thank you! Sheik's Theme is so overlooked by the fans. The way the song flows is something I've never heard in any other piece of music. Some honorable mentions are the Requiem of Spirit, Potion Shop Theme, even the Spirit Temple Theme. All very "otherwordly" songs that bring you almost to a trance.

Sheik's theme gives me such a warm feeling, it's exactly like seeing a childhood friend years later. It also gives you, the player, a much needed sense of relief once you hear the first few notes. The world and story keep getting more dire and dangerous as the game goes on, yet you know there's someone there supporting you, a friend there to help you out in your journey

Great video. While I think Skyward Sword has some of the most beautiful and complex music. BOTW has the most striking use of motifs I've seen from the series. In particular the field theme has notes barely playing at the same time, as one fades out the next one plays, but they just miss each other. In every field theme the 4-1 interval is the heroes motif, its triumphant and means Link is here to save the day, in BOTW that 4-1 is barely registered, because its been so long since the Calamity. When you ride your horse, the LOZ theme starts to play, because the horse is such a catalysing presence, it emboldens you and starts to ignite the flame of Links fate. I could go on and on about that games music. Its genuinely leaps and bounds above most if not all videogame OSTs

I find it fitting that the song that shows memories before being born, also brings back memories of my childhood.

The legend of Zelda’s orchestrated soundtracks for their 25th and 30th anniversaries truly brings me to tears. The soundtrack of tloz is nothing like any other games I’m into tbh

Spicy take but I don't think Koji Kondo had much to do with twilight princess. If you liked it, it probably has more to do with liking someone else's work. It didn't hit the same for me at all as the work he did. I'm sure his exact contribution is documented somewhere but my guess is after MM's stressful development, he began delegating more and more. Which is what leads to skyward sword where he bows out entirely. I doubt it's the on/off switch this youtuber paints it as simply because he's credited. It's usually not how things work.

It is impossible to mute this video. Even with my sound turned off, I can still hear the music that defined my childhood.

the opening theme of OOT brings me to tears sometimes simply from nostalgia, remembering waking up on a snowday, mom making me an egg sandwich for breakfast, and calling my friend patrick on the house phone so we could play through levels together.

I'm really stressed out from work right now and this video was just a beautiful salve. Thanks for making it!

Videogamedunky's video on ocarina of time made me realize what a perfect piece of music the "inside the deku tree" theme is. It creates an atmosphere and tells a story about what an ancient and sacred place you have just entered. Perfection.

The soundtrack i love the most is the Twilight Princess one, I feel like they put their body and soul into making that soundtrack because boy sure it fits too well in that game (Also, the way they used leitmofis males me cry, but not in a bad way ofc)

The title screen of Twilight Princess always gives me goosebumps. There's a certain sadness to it that slowly builds into a defiant triumph. Really sets the tone for the game, which will always be my favorite in the series

This script was pretty good. You get better with each one. Especially notable was your speech about the dungeon themes being agnostic to Link's existence about seven minutes in. "As opposed to instruments played to imitate its stature." Great line.

Despite having had access to a lot of other titles beforehand, wind waker was my console go to and had me obsessed with the music. The title theme is initially cheerful but after completing the game you realise the title theme tells the entire games story with makar and medli chiming in later on in the track etc. It's so good!

The camera angle in ocarina of time’s intro was ahead of the curb video games weren’t that cinematic at that point the way the camera fallows link on his horse and pans into the landscape is just so gripped into our minds or at least nine just that intro and the tune is so iconic

The way you articulate your ruminations is so rich with information - always reinforcing the core idea with examples and relatable explanations. And the ruminations themselves encapsulate something I've never really understood but always felt. Wonderful piece.

Fun fact: the same flute sound appears in Mario 3 warp flute, as a nod of the original Zelda.

Funnily enough I had that little tidbit in my first pass of the script, SMB3 warp whistle was used by permission of the music team bc they were such fans of that sound / Koji Kondo's work in general but unfortunately it ruined the flow of the ending I was building too, glad someone mentioned it though!

Theory: So in the title screen of OoT, a melody from the original Zelda plays, wich is supposed to bring back memories from before you were born. Since OoT comes before the original Zelda, its almost as if the Link from the original Zelda is playing it to see the events of Ocarina of Time, wich is why it plays at the beginning of the game. I know this probably wasnt the intention, but thats how I like to see it :)

you mentioned something that i had never considered before, and that's the diegetic nature of the music within the dungeons. there really is something characteristic about Zelda music that feels in-game, at least inside some of those 3d titles. there's a way that it feels like those songs are bouncing off of the walls, flowing through stone corridors. very cool observation.

My favourite track from OoT is the forest temple theme. I have not heard anything like it since, and the covers I've looked up never get it quite right (for me that is). But the returning themes and motifs in the music for all Zelda games is something that is so special. Even for Zelda games I don't have a connection with, hearing those familiar melodies always makes my heart swell. Thanks for this video. Great work.

Skyward sword and Twilight princess are my favourite games, but Skyward Sword just a little more. The music doesn't hit anywhere NEAR as hard but the gameplay is truly something else to me. The hub world where you can go shop, interact with npcs, do little side stories, it's just all so real.

I played a lot around in OoT and MM as a kid on N64, not knowing what I was supposed to do, but i still had fun. Those soundtracks always stuck with me growing up. The Oot theme never fails to gut punch me every time I hear it. Twilight Princess is the first zelda game played through and beat and brought me back to the series. Its soundtrack is my second favorite in the series. It was so magical hearing it the first time.

Kondo's a cheater. Cuts straight through me every time I hear that opener.

I have been growing up as you with the Zelda series and it made me become a game developer on my own. Of course, I have attempted to fuse some of my favourite series into one as I made The Lore of Canis. It is a bit like Tunic, except you are playing as a wolf like character. The soundscapes are creepy and kind of unique, inspired by the music of the original soul reaver game. Thanks for sharing and keep staying curious!

This is such a lovely and thorough analysis. I've already played a Zelda game before (Phantom Hourglass) but was never too keen on diving into the series. I found Fi's Farewell one day in a nintendo playlist and that song was what hooked me into looking up Skyward Sword and piqued my interest in learning about the Zelda universe. Even though I've listened to the track so many times before, I still teared up when it played as Fi said her farewells. Zelda music is truly a major reason why I am deeply in love with the franchise. I had never considered what you said about Breath of the Wild being broken and lonely, or how the harp represented Zelda's voice in Skyward Sword. The soundtrack is nice and all, but besides the opening scene where Link sets his first foots into Hyrule far to minimalistic to stay in your head. I can understand why it's that minimalistic and I can understand why people appreciate that approach, but for me personally, it just didn't "click" at all. Maybe I was just disappointed with the game in general though as it's certainly one of the weaker Zelda games.

I lost my copy and never wanted to buy a new one for a couple years (hard to spend 60 dollars on a game I’ve already finished that’s 3 years old) but when I found it and got back into it I was absolutely enthralled in the theme. It worked so well

i am seriously so glad this video was made. i couldnt agree more to everything you said, and the loz series truly wouldnt be what it is with that sensational and nostalgic music.

My piece on BotW's empty music is that while it's symbolic of the broken nature Hyrule is in during the game, the music itself is so disconnected from the location outside of towns having their own theme, that seeing old locations (Lon Lon Ranch for example), you can't help but feel like something's missing, and it's not just the broken remnants of the location, but it's theme. Maybe that was intentional, but it would have been cool if recognizable locations had their own somber and broken theme based off of their original theme(s). It's more peevish than anything, but it's that kind of thing where Nintendo could have done more, and I'd even say Koji Kondo would have done more.

iirc, The Temple Of Time's theme in BOTW is a slow, broken version of the Song Of Time. Speed it up a lot and it almost sounds like the original theme.

I just stopped doing pixel art for my very first game that is inspired by Zelda to give you a like - honestly you made me just cry a bit and remembering why I love this game series so much, especially OoT, because I grew up with it and annoyed my Mum by asking her for text reading when I didn't even know the whole alphabet yet... With Zelda the nostalgia just hits different. You did a great job describing this feeling.

ocarina load screen was by far the most impactful piece of music along with OOT's lost woods and song of storms. they'll always hit the way they did the first time I listened.

The music in the Spirit Temple is definitely my favorite, with the Temple of Time being a close second! 🤘

This is an excellent video. Thank you for sharing the flute from the original NES LoZ. I remember when I made that correlation for the first time and thought, "So cool that they used an old idea for a new iconic entrance theme...yet, it's in the future of the timeline and the magical notes from the past are still used in the future." The Zelda universe (multiverse really) is indeed a diegetic masterpiece. I was lucky enough to go to the "Symphony of the Goddesses" tour in 2017. Koji Kondo is truly blessed by God with a unique gift of music to share with the rest of us. Some of the most beautiful and most remarkable pieces are from the Zelda series.

OOT is what got me into gaming. I was around 2-2.5 years old. Would watch my older brother play through the game countless times with the player's guide book out. I even had a good enough concept at one point, that I could beat the final Ganandorf fight on my own. Couldn't really play the rest of the game though haha. As you said Heavy, OOT along with its OSTs with always be special for me.

"A big boss theme is jarring because it represents something that's not supposed to be there." Shows Mr. Vulnerableforasec Glowyeye McWeaktoarrows. I like how in the Ocarina intro theme, the warp whistle tune from the original Zelda (also used in Super Mario Bros. 3) recurs as a leitmotif. Maybe this was done to give a sense of "being transported" into Hyrule?

Great video about how the themes and vibe of Zelda has focussed its soundscape, creating depth for the series. Love the games, especially for their music. I suggest listening to Mort Garson's album "Plantasia" to hear the predecessor and inspiration for a lot of Zelda's music.

The title screen music in Ocarina of Time (my first zelda game AND video game EVER btw) is one of the best music in any video game, in my opinion. listening to it gives me chills its so good!

It's said that, even for people who've lost their memories, music is able to persist beyond things like faces, objects, and everything else. Music stays in our heads longer and clearer than anything else, so even if one day we become too old to remember who we are, we'll still be able to recognize the songs that mean something to us. I hope someday, if it comes to that, then I'll at least be able to remember the zelda songs that meant so much to me in my childhood/early adulthood.

ironically enough, time doesn't exist anymore when i play Ocarina of Time. It still feel as good as when i was a young boy.

About the intro i 100% feel the same way about OoT's Title Screen Theme. As a kid i spent so much time in OoT that i basically lived in that Hyrule.
