Nothing Is Ever Anyone's Fault
Starring Rachel Bloom & Scott Michael Foster
Written by Rachel Bloom, Aline Brosh McKenna, Adam Schlesinger, Jack Dolgen
NATHANIEL
Before I knew you
I did bad things and didn't know why
But now, I know you
And I've learned to look inside
I understand what makes me
Frightened and sad
So, yes, I still do bad things
But are they actually bad? No!
Because nothing is ever anyone's fault
We're all just products of childhood trauma
Nothing is ever anyone's fault
Pain causes anger and fear causes drama
We can't control
The things we do
Just like I can't control
That I'm in love with you
REBECCA
Wow, the first part was kind of amoral, but the last thing was really sweet.
NATHANIEL
Thanks.
REBECCA
What else?
NATHANIEL
I was raised to believe
That every person's in charge of their fate
But now, I clearly see
That my father's a dick and he filled me with hate
You were the first person who told me that.
REBECCA
Maybe you have a point.
I was brought up by a fat-shaming mom
Who made me take laxatives
The week before prom (Yep!)
Now, I overeat ever since that abuse-
NATHANIEL
See?
Psychology is a great excuse
REBECCA
Nothing is ever anyone's fault
NATHANIEL
Nothing is ever anyone's fault
REBECCA
John Wayne Gacy was hit by his dad
NATHANIEL
Exactly!
It wasn't technically Hitler's fault
REBECCA
Wasn't technically Hitler's fault
NATHANIEL
Hitler's brother died
NATHANIEL & REBECCA
And that made him super sad
It's hard to paint people with evil or glory
When you know that everyone's
Got a tragic backstory
Free will's an illusion
Morality is, too
So, it's not my fault that
My parents messed me up
'Cause their parents messed them up
And Adam and Eve were messed up by God
Who was messed up originally by the Big Bang
Everything is the Big Bang's fault!
REBECCA
Good point!
Energy in space was the ultimate bad father
NATHANIEL & REBECCA
Nothing is nobody's fault
REBECCA
Nothing is nobody's-
Is that a double negative?
NATHANIEL
Eh, it sounds good, why bother?
But I'm glad for the trauma
REBECCA
I'm glad for it, too
NATHANIEL & REBECCA
'Cause my past is what led me
To fall in love with you

@AnimeRayanne

I know its meant to be satirical and I don't take it seriously but I do kinda agree with a few things. Like "Its hard to paint people with evil or glory when everyone's got a tragic backstory." I think that part is true (at least for me.) I'm not going to excuse their bad actions but I can't help feeling sorry for them.
@vixxcelacea2778

I think it's pointing out the extreme you can come to when you agree with a lack of free-will. A lot of people go "oh, okay, so nothing changes, I'm not in control, all the bad things I do I'm not responsible for" It misses a crucial idea that very little changes except that you stop blaming people and you realize that there is no good or evil and our system as it stands wants to have it's cake and eat it too. If free-will doesn't exist than putting people in jail is incredibly unethical and immoral. If free-will does exist than punishment isn't harsh enough and any bad choice made must be intentional. If you think of people like a computer, then there is hardware and software. Recognizing mistakes and bad patterns is part of a long software update which can modify the hardware because it's an organic machine. Not having free-will doesn't mean you don't get new information which changes the action you would of otherwise taken. But it also explains why it takes so blasted long to make those changes, because it's not choice. It takes time and update after update and zillions of small revelations to have that information be processed correctly. And because it takes so damn long a lot of people look back and go "One day I just decided" no, you finally had something click that changed the process, and that's because of many small little updates that added up into basically a reboot. But it feels like at some point you just decided something that changed your life. This is why say a new mother can quit smoking, and another mother can excuse it and put her child at risk. We'd like to think one cares more than the other, but really, the one who quit had the proper software update and information that got processed in a way so that the brain can understand that a short term habit has long term consequences. And that's pure luck if you get the right update/information/motivation/construction that allows for that change to happen. Some people are also predisposed to be worse at understanding long term consequences. They do this study a lot with children in the form of treats, IE you will get 3 cookies instead of one if you wait. People with depressed brains and mental health disorders most often have this issue, especially if there is something wrong with dopamine. And nearly all mental health disorders of any description get depression as a piggy back co-morbid. So most of them have some kinda issue somewhere, with drugs, with weight, with relationships whatever it is that takes some executive function and an understanding of long-term investment vs short term gain. All the shitty things that happen is often societies fault for not focusing at all on mental health and not considering that given that we are our brains that it's possibly the most important thing we could focus on besides general health and survival needs. Lots of terrible people could of been stopped had we actually been able to find people with issues and get them help, or humanely isolate ones who are currently beyond the ability we have now to help others, take psychopathic persons with murderous streaks for instance. They should be kept away from other people, but they shouldn't be set up in a revenge based system that does nothing to help anyone. It's infuriating that mental health isn't considered a human right and that everyone isn't evaluated. It wouldn't work in our system because our system thinks free-will is still a thing and it's incredibly damaging to have a system of law and social currency that applies both ideas which do not mix. That and people have a tendency to apply intent to themselves and actions to others, which is saying, they have free-will and made choices that were bad, but I know me, I didn't mean to do a bad thing and I didn't have information to choose otherwise.

@@vixxcelacea2778 without free will, prison is not cruel. It would serve the purpose of protecting those who don't hurt others from those who do. Even if they don't control their actions, their actions still hurt others and it's ok to stop an entity from hurting others through containment even if they don't understand, ie. putting a dog in a crate. It's less for the dog now though and more for the people

@@trevorbrooks7816 without free will, rehabilitation for most prisoners is still the most moral option. Just because free will doesn't exist doesn't mean consciousness doesn't exist, and we shouldn't lock away people forever when many of them could get better with the right help.
Ok, there are so many arguments in this comment section about how this song is either totally sweet or completely amoral, and honestly I feel like both are missing the point. This song takes a true idea (that our present actions are shaped by what happened to us earlier in life), and blows it completely out of proportion to a ridiculously amoral place in a funny way because it is a Comedy Song. It's not meant to be taken at face value, and besides being funny serves as a set up to the choice Rebecca makes later in the episode by showing the unhealthy spiral taking the 'not guilty by reason of insanity' out would create.

It’s my same issue with people who try to criticize “Let it Go” for not being a healthy attitude. Yeah. Obviously. In the perspective of the singer, who’s being primed for character development, she thinks in the face of societal outrage for a way out of the acute mental stress, no matter how illogical that thread is. CXG is just pointing that out with satire.
@JBC352

I find I relate to both because in stress I’ve found myself thinking these kinds of illogical thoughts, after an emotional episode of Criminal Minds, or when reflecting on times I kept trying when I should’ve let it go.
@vixxcelacea2778
4 жыл бұрын
The issue is that even if it isn't anyones fault, that's not a reason to excuse the behavior. It's a reason to help someone with that trauma. I don't think free-will exists either and we are products of cause and effect, BUT, that doesn't mean you let scorpions sting you or others. What it does do is help realize that there is no good or evil and that messed up people who don't understand that they are messed up do messed up things and even those who do can do messed up things. What we should have is a system that focuses on rehabilitation, not punishment, because punishment only makes people worse. Rebecca should probably go to jail, but jail should be a focus on her having to face her mental health instability in a controlled way. Something that isn't as stupid and damaging as either typical jail nor a psych ward because neither helps. The goal would be to treat her humanely and get her as a functional caring stable individual, as should any mentally ill person be treated and have as the ultimate goal. So no, it's not anyones fault, but you don't just let bad things happen. You take charge, protect yourself and those you love along with doing the most humane thing possible to help the damaged ones causing damage. We don't have a system that does this at all. We have a system that focuses on revenge and calls it justice.
I'm just really glad Rebecca found time to read that John Wayne Gacy biography she bought online!

This is one of my favorite songs from the series. First of all, I think it’s in 6/8, which is a refreshing change. The harmonies and blend, with, of course, the requisite key change, are stunning. And the hilarious “logical” build to everything being The Big Bang’s fault is great writing. But also, Scott Michael Foster was really sick with a head cold or flu the day they filmed this. The energy just wasn’t there, so Rachel asked that they rerecord just the audio when he was better. It was much harder syncing the new singing to the already filmed visuals (the opposite of how scenes are usually shot), and it took hours. He credits Rachel, however, with getting more humor out of the piece, specifically telling how she showed him how to milk the “No!” line to be funnier. Way to go, Rachel Bloom!
tbh this entire season i was really worried where nathaniel and rebecca were going because Nathaniel was suddenly "fixed" and it seemed like the show was moving the direction of the two getting together so rebecca could be happy while trying to avoid their relationship being rebecca's magical "im fixed" moment but... this song proved that's not at all what they're doing. Nathaniel isn't better, his reasons for getting better are fucked up and he has a lot of personal growth to go through himself before either of them can have anything healthy. I'm excited to see where this is going to go next season

This was such a great way to build a turning point in Rebecca's story; she's undeniably influenced Nathaniel for the better, but what he's reflecting back at her reveals the worst parts of the story she's told about herself up until this point.

Such an underrated song
Great ending to the season. It shows real character development on Rebecca's behalf. With this song it was easy to think that Rebecca would just fall back into her old destructive habits and mindset and get off with little to no lasting consequences. This is one of the reasons why I love this show, while sometimes it is funny seeing the things Rebecca gets upto when she goes off the rails (I loved the scenes when she was stalking Josh!), you can only mine that type of comedy ore for so long and end up "jumping the white shark", and given that as viewers we are emotionally invested in Rebecca as a character it is good to see her develop, even though at times it is painful, which mirrors real life in that development as a person can be very painful at times. I hope there is a season 4 and I look forward to it!
I can't stop watching this. It's so good. One of the best pieces of musical comedy I've ever seen, easily - it blends heartfelt genuine character moment with total ludicrous amorality so well!

Nathaniel is wearing blue!! Most bad decisions in the show are colour coded with blue, and well this song xd (Rebecca almost wears blue, she was not completly on board first, so even that adds up!)
Rewatching this years later, I’m only realizing now this melody is very reminiscent of “For Good” from Wicked. Especially how Nathanial starts off the song.

Same with every other freaking character, I do imagine Rebecca choosing Nathaniel! I like how they left the ending open ended but I do feel like she wouldn’t choose Josh because of her journey
The best thing about this series is the irony and dark humor, and the most genius part is that they do it without appealing to a more cynical humor, always having a message behind.
I have this in my Amazon music favorites list. Never gets old.

I was kind of surprised Nathaniel was suggesting an insanity plea; as a lawyer both he and Rebecca should know they are (1) not usually successful, (2) not magical get-out-of-jail-free cards, and (3) if successful, might result in indefinite mandatory commitment (something I'm sure neither wants). I'm glad they skipped that cliche, because if it had actually been the story arc, not only would Rebecca have no growth, but it would have been lazy writing for a show that usually doesn't shy away from deconstructing tropes to show real-world consequences.

I was thinking of that too lol. Also that the amount of time she was held after a suicide attempt seemed really short like as soon as she was physically healed she got to go home and she wasn’t held longer. You could attribute both those things to artistic liscense but tbh it seems like there’s a general effort to portray mental health systems accurately so I’m guessing it wasn’t adequately researched (esp the insanity plea thing)

Song: "I was brought up by a fatshaming mom who made me take laxatives the week before prom..." Video immediately recommended after this: Maybe She's Not Such A Heinous Bitch After All Me: ಠ_ಠ ...Nah, she really really is.
Are y'all really finding this unironically sweet

Ruby S I mean, I know this is typical of shippers who are straight and have bad taste, but come on.
After 1:44 the table somehow magically vanishes and does not reappear.

I blame the Big Bang for this inconsistency >:(
I still do bad things, but are they actually bad? NOOOOOOO 😂
I know the message is wrong but it’s so catchy. It’s a nice sweet and amoral song lol

Love is like chemistry you need someone to help you reach your desired state of equelibrium
This is a great example of how in comedy you say basically anything IF you put it in the right context.
This song will forever make me cry because I keep thinking "and then THEY BROKE UP" *add lots of crying*
God, they’re both so damaged but idgaf, I love Nathaniel. If Greg couldn’t work out, I’m glad Nathaniel has grown to be such a lovable character.
See, psychology is a GREAT EXCUSE! 😂😂😂😂😂
THIS SONG IS HILARIOUS my favorite off of the show
THE WAY HE LOOKS AT HER THOUGH
This episode was as shocking as it was funny, Rachel you have done it again. Ps. This song is so fuck up I love it.
I can't take it anymore!! Rachel! How?? How can you create such a freakingly brilliant show like this. This season's final episode is like the roller-coaster! Paula's gross song, Daryl and white Josh, the confession of Rebecca about her feeling toward Nathaniel and her courage at the end. It's too much! Please, we need to see the fight of Rebecca in season four! (And I really hope Trent will get what he deserve after everything he's done that nobody asked for)
Team Nathaniel always!!
Half the time I think like this, and half the time I think I might have agency in an interconnected universe. It's very confusing. I do know for sure though - Rachel Bloom, I love your creations and cannot wait until Season 4!!!
SHIP IT SO HARD
