I've Always Never Believed In You
Starring Donna Lynne Champlin
Written by Rachel Bloom, Jack Dolgen, and Adam Schlesinger
Paula:
YOU STAND BEFORE ME A MAN, FULLY-GROWN
READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD, HEADING OUT ON YOUR OWN
YOU’RE NOW SO THOUGHTFUL, STRONG, AND WISE
I’M PROUD, BUT I’M ALSO SURPRISED
‘CAUSE I ALWAYS NEVER BELIEVED IN YOU
I NEVER GAVE UP GIVING UP ON YOU
DEEP INSIDE, I ALWAYS KNEW
THAT YOU’D EVENTUALLY NEVER COME THROUGH
NOT FOR A SECOND, DID I THINK
YOU WOULDN’T END UP DEAD OR IN THE CLINK
FOR POSSESSION OR ASSAULT OR WORSE, IT’S TRUE
‘CAUSE I’VE ALWAYS NEVER BELIEVED IN YOU
THE MOMENT YOU WERE BORN
THEY PLACED YOU IN MY ARMS
AND I LOOKED INTO YOUR EYES AND THOUGHT,
“WELL, THAT’S A MURDERER.”
I THOUGHT, AT BEST, YOU MIGHT BARELY MANAGE
AND IT WOULD BE MY JOB TO TRY TO MITIGATE THE DAMAGE
‘CAUSE I’VE ALWAYS NEVER BELIEVED IN YOU
I NEVER ONCE DOUBTED DOUBTING YOU
WITH EVERY OPPORTUNITY THAT YOU BLEW
ALL MY WORST FEARS JUST KEPT COMING TRUE
YOU NEVER WERE A TEACHER’S PET
BUT YOU DID KILL A TEACHER’S PET
WITH EVERY HORRIFYING THING YOU’D SAY OR DO
I CONTINUED TO NEVER BELIEVE IN YOU
SOME PEOPLE ARE DESTINED TO FLY HIGH
OTHERS JUST GET REALLY, REALLY HIGH
SOME PEOPLE REACH FOR THE STARS
SOME JUST REACH FOR THE PANEL IN THE CEILING WHERE THEY KEEP THEIR DRUGS
I HELD OUT NO HOPE FOR SO LONG
BUT NOW, I ADMIT I GOT YOU ALL WRONG
‘CAUSE NOW, I ACTUALLY BELIEVE IN YOU
NO LONGER HAVE A TOTAL LACK OF FAITH IN YOU
APPARENTLY, THERE ARE THINGS YOU CAN DO
YOU’RE FULL OF POTENTIAL AND NO ONE KNEW
ALLOW ME TO TIP MY HAT TO YOU, SIR
‘CAUSE YOU’RE NO LONGER A TOTAL LOSER
IT FEELS STRANGE TO SAY IT, BUT IT’S TRUE
I WEIRDLY, SHOCKINGLY, COMPLETELY
BELIEVE IN YOU
I BELIEVE I BELIEVE I BELIEVE IN YOU
YES, I DO
YES, I DO

Paula went from broken marriage, unattentive mom, and a general person without life and perspective to happily married, being an involved mom and living her dreamjob. Good job, Paula.

buciallstar What’s so moving too is that it wasn’t some magical or instant shift. Fixing her struggling marriage took hard work. Being involved in her kids took attentiveness and care. Becoming a lawyer took persistence and balance. It’s so great to see CXG show that happiness in life IS attainable, but it won’t just fall into your lap. You have to make your own happiness.

@@micahgoldson1253 I love that so much. This show so much because the musical numbers are comedy gold. Lol. But it’s also realistic. All the characters work hard on themselves. We got big romantic, amazing moments, but we also got to see that it wasn’t happily ever after. Relationships take work. And we got to see their highs and lows. This show makes a point of showing us what happens when you stop working to better yourself. And how you can spiral right back into the bad if you let yourself.

I honestly think that’s one of the best parts. Paula’s being open about how she felt, which he’s always kind of known, and that’s a turning point for them. To be honest about how she didn’t believe in him in the past shows how much she really does, genuinely believe in him now, and that’s why it’s so moving.

This song is primarily about Paula, but still it's such a testament about kids who never feel comfortable sharing their lives with their parents and instead keep their mask going even at home. He had his own development on his own terms, off screen without an apparent support system, and it's important that this is thrown in Paula's face. And that she accepts it instead of doubting it

I dunno, I feel like this season is kind of her kick in the ass season like Heather had last season, I feel like this show is really good at having a running joke about a character's shortcomings and then all of a sudden being like "Wait you need to address this", like Paula has just kind of been neglecting to actually parent her kids, and having Rebecca to scheme and plan with just exacerbated the problem, and it's gotten to the point now where she's actually realizing the effects this has on their relationship with them. Either way, really love this direction!

@@brynnamoran4320 this is why I super love this show. It uses all these tropes other shows use like "oops, I'm a bad parent, dang!" Or "I'm a horrible insane girlfriend! How cute and funny" and then turn it like, no that's not ok, or healthy. Here's how you can get help. It's a show on the air that is finally addressing these issues so common and borderline normal in our society and stating they are not normal, and we Can get help and make hard decisions successfully. These writers and actors are just fabulous.

This woman has an amazing voice, those trills and notes at the end, were just beautiful. When she sings those last notes “I believe I believe, yes I do, in you.” I could hear her sing that a million times. They need to do this as a straight song with really serious lyrics. Hi

Wow 🤩 We also got to see her impeccable dancing and great acting skills- it’s all in the face with her, really! 💕💜

i love this because it subverts that bs that parents have to and innately do have faith in their children. even if you love your kid they can let you down, however, it is also amazing because it shows how kids can surprise their parents and gain respect. he gained his mother's respect by proving her wrong which just feels like a really good foundation for a positive relationship.
