Not Quite a Chateau DIY 188 -Tour of The Middle House - Unlived in for Decades - Checking for Damage

We venture into our middle house, which has been unlived in for at least 40 or 50 years. We are checking it over because we haven't been inside for over a year ourselves.
For those of you who asked/insisted....I now have buy me a coffee registered, thank you so much
www.buymeacoff...
#notquiteachateau #chateaudiy #oldfrenchproperty
We are Tony and Jane and we are living in and renovating our old Relais De Poste/Coaching Inn.
We live in the middle of France in a region called The Berry.
We have over 40 rooms to renovate so there is plenty of work to be done. We also love to trawl the local Brocantes, flea markets and antique shops for quirky furnishings and furniture.
We love to find out about local history and often visit other peoples buildings including our friends’ Chateaux.

What a shame that the building is not waterproof, how about using the cheap metal roofsheets instead of a tarp? I really hope you will stop the slow destruction of this building.

We may do that Marianne, there is a reason, which I can't reveal just yet, why we have not done more in this house, but the temporary measures we put in place have pretty much kept it from any more deterioration.

All the hearths in the building are keepers, they are simply lovely! Looks like a team of people would be good to get the initial clean up done, re-roof and get the windows done, then the fun work inside can be done. Good thing Tony knows his stuff to get the jobs done well. I can't wait to see what you do.

I love the staircase in that house, and your favorite fireplace. Some time ago, we had our antique rugs professionally washed. The lovely gentleman was kind enough to walk us through how to do it at home. He said to lay them on the lawn, top side down. Use a hose to soak the rug, use very gentle soap working it in from the back with a soft broom. Then gently rinse (don't use a lot of water pressure). Then leave it out to dry, still top down so the pattern does not fade. I've never done it myself - but it would be fun to see if those disused rugs could be brought back to life!

I just love the middle house. Yes it's in really rough shape but, if you look past the damage, it was once an absolutely charming house. That staircase is gorgeous, can you just imagine it as it was? It was a work of art and can be again with Tony's skilled attention. Restored to it's former glory, this house would be a dreamy place to spend a week on holiday. I bet it's going to be so peaceful and cozy. I just love it. 💕

Well, you've got a bit of a job there Tony!! Nothing you haven't done before though, is it? That house has got some amazing original features, like the fireplaces and panelling, and that beautiful staircase. Demolishing it just isn't an option! It'd be interesting to take photos of the window hardware, and the staircase and fireplaces, and get them appraised to get a definitive age, wouldn't it? It's going to be fun watching this transformation! Big hugs x

Hi again Karen, we will be saving what we can but some things may be beyond repair, the stairs and fireplaces will definitely be saved/repaired. The window hardware is probably around 100 years old and not original, the style of windows are very similar to most of our other windows and were probably replaced in the 1920s xx

Oh my - I’m surprised you didn’t make it watertight as soon as you moved into the property - the damage that has occurred since you took possession is huge - I’m glad you are finally giving the house some love Black mold is very toxic to your health - you should not be going anywhere near that without a respirator as the spores can attack your lungs and is a cause of lung cancer - is the house attached to where you live or one of the rental gites as that will not be safe for you or your guests to breath in 😱

Good Tuesday evening Tony and Jane, I thought I would watch your channel as it was recommended by Stuart. Please tell me: How long have you lived in France? What kind of property did you buy? Is it 3 houses crammed together? Or is this one big property. What process did you use to locate your property? I am in love with the video I watched: Tony was fixing a chandalier and welded a dog piece on backwards. I must say… that’s me except I would have welded myself somehow. Looking forward to watching more DIY projects. Can’t Wait! Cordially, Jen

Hello Jen, welcome to our little channel. We have lived in France around two and a half years now, it is three houses, two barns and a bread oven house, it used to be a Relais de Poste or coaching inn. As the other Jen mentions here, you can find out more in previous episodes, especially episode 12, hope that helps you enjoy it more

I've watched from your first episode... not subscribed that long, but I've been lurking... this is my favorite of your houses, I can't wait to see what you do with it. I thought a long time ago that you said you'd eventually move into it. Maybe I'm not remembering correctly. It's really something special. ☺

Hello, so we can get more perspective on the actual size of the middle house, can you share how many approximate square feet or metres you think the middle house is? Thank you 😊

Hi Sandi, I don't know the square meterage but there are 2 large and 2 smaller rooms on the ground floor, plus two rooms on the ground floor of the barn, there are two large and one smaller bedrooms on the first floor plus access to the first floor of the barn, then the small servants room and a huge loft space at the top

You have no plans for that house . Just do the roof first and then put new windows in. Keep the water out of the building. Does it rain a lot in your region?

Hi Jose, we have covered up the roof a couple of times temporarily and we don't want it to get worse but our hands are tied at the moment we have waited more than two years for another roof to be done on a building we use all the time, we still don't know how soon the roofers can get that done, they are all so busy and there is no budget for that house at the moment.
