Not Just A Yaris Cross (Lexus LBX 2024 Review)

Lexus has launched its new affordable entry point to the Australian lineup, the hybrid-only LBX compact SUV/crossover.
Chasing Cars’ Olek Novak takes the three-strong variant lineup for a spin at the Australian launch.
Starting from $47,550 before on roads, the LBX is split across two grades and offers a choice of FWD ($52,990) or AWD ($56,990) in the higher Sports Luxury specification.
All versions are powered by a 1.5L petrol-electric hybrid system offering a total power output of 100kW. The LBX is underpinned by the same TNGA-B platform as the Yaris Cross.
So what are the highlights and lowlights of the newest, smallest and most affordable Lexus model? Let’s find out.

I have test driven it twice (UK market). I liked it and so did the kids initially, but after trying the Volvo EX30 (Full electric) the kids both said they felt cramped in the back. My wife said it felt very small, and she is 5 foot! Its a lovely car, the kit is great but all the above is as important, space and comfort.

The carry-on about the rear legroom is a bit rich. It's primarily a SMALL local runabout, so I'd be happy to sit in the rear quarters as the seats were said to be quite supportive. The hard plastic rear door trim is a compromise that I'd accept, but the lack of rear air vents is unfathomable. 🙄

I drove one and definitely no complaints - great quality little beastie - EXCEPT it does indeed need more power/torque. A turbo on that wee 3cyl lump would do the trick nicely and/or an upping of the juice through the electrics. Oh, and don't increase the cost, Lexus, when you make these sorely needed changes. You'll then be unbeatable in this niche, no risk.

Lexus AU really underoffers their customers with the LBX, less trims, no options for interior color (even NZ market has hazenut interior), no option for monotone (blackroof is a nay for many people). AWD for what? People buys car like this not to race. Should have offered the above for a so-called luxurious small suv.

Why call this a SUV? It's a hatchback. I don't get the idea of calling everything a SUV now. According to FORD the definition of a SUV is "An SUV is a Sport Utility Vehicle. Powered for performance, an SUV should stand up to tough conditions and harsh environments, without compromising on interior comforts.". This Yaris (Strike) Lexus does not qualify being called a SUV. It does not "perform", it will most like not survive tough conditions and its small therefore compromising comfort.

  • @neothaka

It is a hatchback with an SUV'ish design. My guess it just sounds more appealing, given how popular SUVs are (despite being a rather terrible trend). It's the same reason cars would be called "Compact SUV" or "Crossover SUV". This is marketing 101, it just sounds more desirable if it has a silly name as opposed to calling it was it is, a compact, fuel-efficient city commuter.

It is a very smooth sales pitch video. Knowing this is a hard sell TNGA variant, any reviewer who was given the autonomy might try to compare / contrast any other vehicle that are less boring than a Yaris. My 3 cylinder CVT vehicle has better power / torque, .....,nevertheless, was thirty thousand cheaper, at least. Yet, back seat leg rooms are also better. Its an insult to the name SUV, knowing the amount of passenger leg room. We all witnessed Yaris in highways, so I am not going to mention this powertrain is a even tougher sell to highway users. Should I decide to get a TGNA vehicle, this video is a good explanation of what my nerest dealers will be telling me. May be, an independent reviewer can just mention this as the luxury version of your Yaris then we can save everybody 10+ minutes of back and forth video of beating around the Yaris.😂

I’m sure if you click around long enough you’ll find someone who will give you your pre-determined opinion - the fact is that aside from similar performance and economy, the LBX doesn’t feel much like a Yaris Cross at all. Ripping out the entire interior and replacing it is a pretty good way to get started.

Someone really need to start giving the information about the size of the seats. Not all seats are equal, in any terms. They all differ in size especially. I have a Lexus IS and the front seats are SHORT. It's a compact sedan, nobody expects SHORT seats. I expect this tini-tiny "SUV" to have much shorter seats than those in a larger SUV. And it's OK, but it should be a PUBLIC information. There's no way a Yaris based car can be comfortable. Maybe for the Japanese, not for an average Caucasian.

We have an NX450H+ ( 12 months old ) and we have been looking for a car to replace our Citroen for supermarket shopping. We have ordred the LBX AWD model for delivery in August (red with a black roof - we will have it wrapped and ceramic coated). The annoying thing about having a European and Asian car is the turn indicators being on opposite sides. In our late 70s, we want a car that we can just slide in and out of. We also like the idea of having exactly the same instrumentation. This car will do 7,000 km per year and our 450 will do 10,000km. Because we have a very substantial solar PV system with batteries, it makes sense for us to drive the plug-in hybrid 450 most. We did expect to buy an EV as our second car but, with the very low fuel consumption of the LBX, this purchase makes more sense. We are also mindful of the fact that we might want to quit our big home and go to an apartment where EV are difficult to say the least.
