This and all Tone Priest videos are for edu-tainment purposes only. Vacuum tube amplifiers can have lethal voltages in excess of 700 volts. Capacitors can retain a deadly charge even when an amplifier is turned off and unplugged. Videos are not instructional nor do they advocate anyone doing any kind of repairs on their gear. Nobody should do electrical work on anything for any reason ever. Keep your hands and belongings inside the car at all times.

    I watched Tony McKenzie's deep dive on this amp, and by all appearances, she's a little gem! If you live in the UK (where's its significantly cheaper) and like the way the amp looks and sounds, it seems to be a no-brainer. The manufacturers aren't stupid - they know when they're making junk and when they're making a quality amp. They should have had the confidence to let a couple of amp mechanics show off what's under the hood. I don't understand why Marshall wouldn't have given the amp to a couple of popular techs out there. Maybe they figure people aren't interested in making informed buying decisions? Sales 101: Features - Advantages - Benefits. This amp has a lot of F.A.B. and Marshall should taken advantage of that. Thank you to everyone who watched and commented. Even the peopled who 👎 - we need a world where people can disagree and constructively criticize and still all be friends.

    For the last 20 years plus, I've chosen to own and play only hand-wired amps with turret board construction with pots, jacks, switches and tube sockets all chassis mounted. Not only are they often constructed with higher quality components and TCL during the build, but they are also much easier for me to service or repair at home.

    Reading a lot of baseless unfounded whining on this thread, along with Tone Priest's views shared in video. First of all, as a former boutique amp builder, I challenge TP to build and mass market a handwired head with equivalent features and circuit in the US with top grade components for $1700. You'll be out of biz and in debt after the first year. Onesies twosomes here and there for your friends and a few others? Absolutely. Have at it. To the others going on about the "cheap components and PCB"...I've had my two SV20H's out on the road full-time for over two years getting banged around on trucks and loading ramps and haven't had a single issue develop so far. Opened up one of my heads to do a bright cap mod and the traces and solder holes seem solid. Way better than the earlier 70's Marshall PCB's. The items that shouldn't be on the main PCB, like tube sockets, aren't. Knobs and jacks are on their own separate PCB's, just like Ampeg's from the 70's. Hell, even 70's Orange and Ampeg amps had tube sockets on the PCB. Would I like to see a handwired SV20 issued? Yeah for the fun of it. But expect it to run around $3k (in the US at least) easily. But until then, these amps sound great and are proving to be reliable. So there ya go. Continue your whining.

  • @TonePriest

    @TonePriest

    You make some very good points. I don't think hand wired necessarily equals high quality. That all depends on the person making the amp. I have no problems with PCB amps or manufacturers making cost effective decisions. My whining is about the fact that we aren't given the opportunity to see under the hood to make in informed buying decision. This amp may be a great deal or it may be a money pit. Time will tell.

    It's almost certainly going to be junk on the inside because that's their business model. They do not want to sell you an amp that will last 10 years. they do not want to sell you an amp that will be cost-effective to repair. The reason is if they did give you that quality, they would not get any repeat business. So they will try to get away with the cheapest quality components and construction while still sucking you in with the great sound. That way when your amp dies on you, you'll likely come back anyway because you want that classic sound. The current release is more or less the same as the SV20 and it will come with those very same cheap input and output jacks, lower grade PCB and a host of other carefully curated components from an unknown source in China. And they try to fool people by advertising them as hand built in the UK, giving the false impression that the quality will be up there with expensive hand-wired amps, when the reality is they are being assembled in the UK with those cheap and nasty imported parts.

  • @TonePriest

    @TonePriest

    Likely but maybe not. Every once in a while a company will surprise you. For example, I always thought Blackstar amps were junk but their high end stuff is very nice. Back in the 80's the American car manufacturers use the model you describe and the Japanese took the opposite approach. Honda and Toyota are doing very well for themselves. There's a lesson to be learned there for sure.

    Suhr, Friedman or a good local amp builder who knows what he's doing can easily old school build that JTM circuit with the fx loop, using high quality components and better than the 20w - 5w switch, install Power Scaling. Then you'll have a life long serviceable keeper quality tube amp. Unfortunately, the truth is the large amp companies stopped building quality gear a long long time ago.

    I wouldn't say a Hot Rod is trash. It just has a couple of engineering flaws that can be sorted out by a good tech. But... that's an additional couple hundred bucks. If one put that couple hundy towards a better amp in the first place that would save some heartache. But there the rub - how do we all know what is 'good'?
