There was always something about this song that bothered me until I finally figured it out. He keeps singing that it's all because of you, but the song is all about him. Best way to be passive-aggressive and kill an apology.

That's the thing about "older" music... there's a good chance you've "heard it"..... but never really "listened to it". I know there's a lot of music from this era that I outright ignored at the time, even if it was on the radio.... but I've gotten into it more recently.

This song was very popular twenty years ago, it was always being played on multiple stations throughout the day. Always thought the lead singer resembled John Cusack. Living in California myself, the question was easy. lol I can definitely see how this song would have affected people, whether it was coming out of a relationship or just mistakes we've made along the way. Y'all should check out the song Darkness by Disturbed. A friend of mine made a mix CD for me back in the early 2000s that had the track on it. I listened to it for years without knowing who tf it was. It is a great song, but sounded nothing like the Disturbed I knew in that time.
I love the early 2000's, we still had a very big diversity in music in mainstream, not like today when everything pretty much sounds the same
Muh favorite Hoobastank song is Remember Me. I also like Out of Control while Crawling in the Dark was their break out hit. Running Away is another a lot of people have probably heard. Hope you get to dive in to more of their music!

My favorite thing about this song was that it was the break up song of the time, and you would here it blasted in the school parking lot after a break up simply because it was popular and not because they actually listened to Hoobastank regularly. However the person playing it had no clue that the lyrics of the song were placing blame squarely on their shoulders.

I bet the band/song you were confusing with them was a song by the band Incubus? lol. Just wanted to guess.
Makes me sad this song got so big, because it's not even remotely close to what their sound actually is. I had their self-titled album, and listened to that thing until it stopped playing right. Crawling in the Dark, Running Away, Remember Me and Pieces were the best on the album. Also, The Reason has a sequel song called 'Same Direction' that you really need to hit up. Out of Control is a good one if you want something more up-tempo.

That singer must have overdone his vocal because I heard him do a live version of this a while later and he could barely hang on. It was like he was singing with laringitas.
What's a Hooba and why does it stank?
Personally this isn't one of fav Hoobastank songs. I prefer their upbeat stuff like Crawling In The Dark, or even The Dance That Broke My Jaw (from when they were Hoobustank).
To add to what Sam was saying I remember mixed CD's coming out in some music magazines with 20+ bands on a disc. Strange mini uprise of what I'll call a sub genre of sorts. It was like a surge of Cry Baby Whining Music!!?? LIFEHOUSE was a famous one and a ton of "Christian Whine Rock!!?? To each their own though! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
