    Pre-covid, there used to be a one-a-day service from Nottingham to Leeds in the evening which would call at Derby, further south than Nottingham station. It also went on the Nottingham to Derby line to do so, passing the East Midlands Parkway spur, meaning Northern used to go slightly further south technically.

    Awesome video Nick and honestly Natt did a epic job at Chathill Station! Even know Nottingham is the Southern point on the Northern Network, used to be Derby there were some very late services which called at Derby but now withdrawn. Also the southern operated Northern Station is Sandbach as I did that journey once travelling from Sandbach to Chathill in a day for only £5!

    The most northerly station on the TFW network is Prestatyn. The most southern is Cardiff Wales Airport, involving two changes at Chester and Cardiff, on TFW trains only. There are even a few direct trains from Prestatyn to Cardiff, making the journey even simpler.

    Some trips that could be interesting would be: - GWR North (Worcester Shrub Hill) to South (Penzance) - TFW North (Manchester Pic.) to South (Rhoose Cardiff International Airport) - TFW East West doesn't have much of a point since there are direct trains between Stockport to Milford Haven - ScotRail East (Aberdeen) to West (Arisaig) or North (Thurso) to South (Carlisle)

  • @MercenaryPen

    @MercenaryPen

    with GWR its a question of whether North-South or East-West makes the more interesting trip... either way Penzance is included (probably as the starting point) but you get the choice between Worcester Shrub Hill and Gatwick Airport (via the North Downs line)

    I love the lines you chose today, it make me think of when people say "It grim up North" and you just look at our nature and want to cry at its beauty. I almost cried ones on a foggy day between Leeds and York, the view was just so beautiful. The southern point of the Northern network being in the Midlands both makes sense and frustrates me. I'd love to see an east-west version, idk what the real places are but Blackpool to Scarborough would be a trip and a half. Great excuse to talk about closed railways/stations. (Whitby-Scaraborough and Blackpool Central own my heart lol)

    The GWR network would be a pretty good one to do this with considering it’s size, and I suppose there’s the choice to do North-South or East-West Most northerly on GWR would be Worcester Foregate Street with the most southerly & westerly being Penzance, Whereas the most easterly would be Redhill (I believe it just beats Paddington by a mile or two, worth a check though). Potentially possible to do all 3 in one go?

    Hey, shame you didn’t get the best weather to fully enjoy the Settle to Carlisle line and you looked to be sitting on the wrong side of the carriage to fully enjoy seeing the curve of the Ribblehead Viaduct. The catering trolley is run by the Settle to Carlisle Railway Trust, don’t think for one minute it’s a Northern offer 😂 It’s also very interesting to get off at Hellifield, besides a wonderful cafe on the platform, West Coast have sidings there to swap loco’s usually diesel to steam to continue to Carlisle.

    Nice one Nick! Here's a suggestion: ScotRail: The furthest south station (Carlisle) to the second furthest south station (Stanraer). I expect you'll want to wait for the weather to clear up first though. Alternately, try covering as many stations that TfW calls at as possible while not riding on TfW (must get to the station via Avanti, GWR, etc).
