Спорт
In the first full check of the line for the 2022 marten and fisher season, I check traps while a snow storm makes its way into the mountains of northern Maine.

Well that was cool. I like the fact that you show some of the empty sets. Makes it feel more like what trapping can be like. Plus I like the insight into Martin trapping and habitat. The catches are great too but I like the rest equally. I’d watch either way. Good luck out there. 👍😎

Thank you man!
Nice going, we haven’t had any snow where I’m at in Mass.
I love those martin boxes! Nice design!
Even with the cold you don’t seem to have any problems on the trap freezing to the animal. Everyone you seem to have caught this trip comes right off without any hair loss. I was wondering earlier in the video I was thinking to myself why doesn’t he. carry a Trap with him just in case. Stay safe and God bless. ✌️🇨🇦

Good observation! The most recent check I had to leave a lot of traps on the animals as it was colder.
Good run Keep at it don't get burried in all that snow

Thanks Charles. I heard that too. My question is....how far up??? Guess we'll have to wait and find out. Fingers not crossed haha.
Put a shelled hardboiled egg in those boxes and the martin won't pass em up even on a full belly. Off to the stash it'll go!! :>)

Haha yes they are!
The snow can teach you a lot ........... and make you pull your hair out too ! Can you use the small boxes in the trees like I see them use in Canada ? Really good vid !!!!

For sure it can. No, our boxes have to have at least 18" distance from the opening to the trap so they have to be big.
👍
Looks like a good place to rub the paint off the truck
Why do you not set a trap on both sides of the road at each stop where the habitat is suitable on both sides? Or maybe diagonally to increase the spread. On right side go forward a bit. On the right side walk back a bit. Double the sets with the same amount of driving and stopping.

Could be done, but then I'd cover only half as much ground with same number of traps. If a marten is near one of my stops I'm pretty confident I can catch it with one trap, and the other trap can go into another Martin's home range.
Do you lose many to predators with boxes on the ground? Great video.

Occasionally some years. None this year.
So what’s the holy grail in animals down there? Up here it’s coyote and otter. I’ve only caught one of each but I only scale this by the reaction of the old timers when I told them about the catches.

Hmmm...good question. In my part of the state it would probably be bobcat, as they are very rare here. But they're common just a couple hours south of me. Mink is a pretty rare catch for me.
Put traps on an angled log off ground
Catch the beaver so you can drive on the road.
“Ahh This Martin is stiff must have caught him a few days ago” checking them traps every 24hr good job 👍🏻

These are on a 5 day check, which is the legal requirement for bodygrip traps here.
Why do you put the call lure up high on the tree?
@trappingtoday
Жыл бұрын
High so the scent can disperse from the set further, and so the animal can differentiate the smell of the bait from the lure when at the set.

Another wow!
Have you noticed any correlation between distance the trap is set from the road and catches?
@trappingtoday
Жыл бұрын
Good question highly variable. I can't say I've nailed down a clear pattern but i would guess generally closer to the road is better. That said, when they are actively hunting the animals usually veer off the road at each of my sets.
I had to come back and watch again. Good Video!! But one thing really bugged me! To the guy that said to pick your traps off the ground so they wont get snow on them. What a foolish thought! Has got to be either meaning something else or is someone from one of those big cities that knows nothing about nothing of life! Wow!!
