NORTHERN IRELAND: MARTIN McGUINNESS HIT ON HEAD DURING DISTURBANCES

(8 Jul 1997) English/Nat
There was more violence on the streets of Northern Ireland Monday night as the protestant marching season went on.
The Sinn Fein chief negotiator, Martin McGuinness, was hit on the head during disturbances in the town of Bellaghy as loyalist bands prepared to march through the streets.
McGuinness didn't appear seriously hurt.
More than 100 people civilians and soldiers have been injured since Sunday.
Six of them are seriously ill.
Sinn Fein's chief negotiator Martin McGuinness appealed for calm as police and troops pulled back after Monday's parade in Bellaghy had passed off peacefully.
He said this kind of troubles only benefit the British government and the RUC.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Listen, listen. I want you all to listen very carefully. This is exactly what these people are looking for. I am appealing to every single one of you to listen to what I have to say. Do not allow yourself to be provoqued by the RUC, by the British army. The world is seeing what is happening in Bellaghy. The world has seen what happened on the Garvaghy road. And we have to keep the focus of attention on what the British government, the RUC, and the Orange order have done. If this here tonight ends in a riot, they will have won, that's a reality, lets not give them that."
SUPER CAPTION: Martin McGuinness, Sinn Fein chief negotiator
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I just basically asked people to be calm, peaceful and dignified. And if I can do that after being hit on the head by a RUC baton, then I think people should listen very carefully to that message. I'm prepared to be calm, I'm prepared to be peaceful and I'm prepared to be dignified and want to do the same."
SUPER CAPTION: Martin McGuinness, Sinn Fein chief negotiator

Around AD 400 the Dál Riata peoples from the East coast of Ireland migrated over to the West coast of Scotland and settled around Argyle. These migrants from were especially noteworthy because they were known to the Romans as "Scotti" and would eventually give their Gaelic language and their name to all of what is now known as Scotland. Eventually the Pic's who were the indigenous tribe living in the East of Scotland amalgamated with the Scotti under Cináed (Kenneth) mac Ailp'n in A.D. 844. Seems the Irish have much more of a connection to Scotland than the Union Jack waving Rangers fans think.

Who was to defend Catholics against the combined ranks of the Royal Ulster Constabulary, the Ulster Volunteer Force and the British Army when they were beating, torturing and even killing unemployed or low-paid Irish Catholics in the North of Ireland, including women and children? Look at Lenny Murphy and the Shankill Butchers. They regularly picked up innocent Catholics and carved them up in the back of taxis while they were still alive, using butchers' knives. For years nothing was done about them. The Irish Army and the Irish police in the Irish Republic did nothing to protect Irish Catholics from suffering brutality and daily discrimation in Ulster. The Catholics had no other option but to form a guerilla Army to prevent the Loyalists, the police and the British Army carry out a genocide against them while the Irish Government did nothing. The IRA did many despicable and horrific things, but that's what happens when an ethnic minority faces the threat of extinction.

Shame Martin you and Jerry did not work your political influence for peace earlier ie in 1972 instead you built up the Republican and paramilitary support in the early days creating a monster. Bloody awful situation on both sides, hate feeds hate, a lot of people died, heaps of double agents and back room deals on both sides. Your a real politician, just like Ian Paisley and Margaret Thatcher. Took 38 years to improve the situation, Ireland was an example on how not to handle civil unrest for a long time, at least you helped significantly in the peace process, I give you a big thumbs up for that. You welcome to have a beer at my pub. As a teenager in the 1970’s felt so sorry for the Irish people watching TV bombings and riots, what was it all for, such nice people.

  • @Heresy1987

Aaron, no the PIRA are not the main army in Ireland. That would be what everyone would call the Irish Army. The PIRA which you refer to in regards to their methods of clandestine attacks in the British army and localised security force apparatus ie the RUC and UDR are an underground guerrilla army. Some call the PIRA terrorists, while other more enlightened and open minded types call them freedom fighters. Personally, in my view, some of the more reckless and loose cannon operations that the PIRA engaged in (the ones where civilians were injured or killed in attacks) were a propaganda own-goal and godsend to the British AND Irish authorities. They did nothing but sully the cause for Irish freedom, reunification and make sectarianism worse. In military terms, the PIRA could never fight its war on the British state in conventional terms. They didnt have the numbers, the logistics or the training to do so. While they were one of the best equipped clandestine groups in the world with great homemade technology added into the mix, they couldnt ever hope to match a much better trained, quartered and equipped army in the British. To do so wouldve been suicide and kamikaze-esque so they used the tactics of hit and run and convert landmines etc.

Whatever people thought of Martin I think he really tried to align with a political settlement regarding the troubles. He gained considerable opposition from the hardliners of his own side but pushed on to establish a working relationship with Ian Paisley that within itself was a incredible outcome.I have no authority regarding the troubles was not there cannot possibly have any understanding of how it feels to loose a loved one to political violence I wish no one offence.I just believe there are consequences for what we do in life and no man is immortal whatever our Religous or political tribal affiliation if we can gain equality and justice without arms it is commendable..I was deeply moved by a documentary I saw regarding victims of paramilitary violence knee capping ect from both sides on the same ward. They shared biscuits ect little acts of human kindness there was dignity in their suffering it is tragic to see a human being shot through the arms the legs reduced to being a cripple it is someone’s brother son father uncle. It takes courage to seek a peaceful settlement/resolution to such deep rooted division both sides are commended for the peace agreement for seeking to find a way forward away from hatred and violence.

NO. McGuiness' behavior in his later life was a pure act of "desperation", because men who have committed terrible acts soon change their tone when they know they are reaching their end. They become desperate for redemption, it must have kept him up alot at night all the people he killed. It is a tough one because maybe he had truly changed his ways and was sorry for what he had done, but it just seems this only happened AFTER he had got N Ireland where he wanted it and had taken out specific individuals as part of his cause. I would have to look him in the eye to know if this man was truly sorry for what he had done to the innocent and ofcourse that will never happen now, so yes I will judge.

They had to keep the soldiers on the streets for longer due to why they came back into Ireland the orange order brought them in and kept them in for a 30 year war due to the orange order so it’s a privilege to see the end of the orange state now the catholic’s have a voice in there own country and native tongue though still in the mist of struggle we’re blessed to see the generations that brought an end to this peace is the only winners in any conflict facts🇮🇪32
