    The captain commented on the color of the meat based on diet. I knew about the krill but didnt know anchovie turned it pumpkin color. Learned something, thx. Also picked up my 2 pk of 4 in sardine finish cut plugs. I think I now have like 9 colors. Addiction...

    Man nice salmon. I fly fish for Atlantic salmon here in NewBrunswick. I got some videos of us in the remotes of NewBrunswich fishing them. Here is the latest video of us scouting for some salmon. The biggest we caught was around 25 to 30 pounds but these ones on this channel are monsters.

    At 8:17 the captain talks about the effect of the feed on the color of the flesh of the salmon. Early in the season the fish are offshore feeding on krill and other things. When they arrive at the Marin coast the feed on mostly anchovies and squid. How long does it take for a salmon to lose the deeper red color that many claim is associated with the krill?

    Drags too tight, they always come off when you try to lift them and they roll like that. I like to have a lighter drag and get them tired out and not tear a huge hole for the hook to come out of. Nice fish!

    By the time you buy all the artificial baits, scents assimilators etc, your cost is more than simply using the real thing is it not? Another question, do you leave your down riggers still in the water once you have a fish on? Would that be an issue for tangling with your fish on line? I also noticed your down-rigger cable and ball are not swiveled back into gunnel, by keeping them in you active position, would they not also create an issue for the anglers line and/or the net person when trying to land the fish?

    Their boats probably big enough that they have enough room to fight the fish and keep it away from the cable. But generally yeah, youre supposed to retrieve the ball and swing the boom parallel with the boat.

    I think these are worth it esp if you buy the unrigged 2 pk. Natural bait IS good but as others said, they get old lotsa prep (brining and scenting are fun but more time and money). These avoid scratchbait (more time in water) its a 1 time purchase, & a little anchovie paste from your local grocery store (a couple dollars and in a tube like toothpaste very ez and clean) add a little herring gel and go. Im using more artificials. Still not sold on hoochies though I have them all, have done really well with red krock spoons up high (like 25 pulls) esp. 1st thing in the morning. Later is deeper

    Why do you run weights instead of a diver of some sort like diver or dipsey? I'm asking out of curious if there are befits of it. On east coast we mainly just use dipsy divers and downriggers.

    Because charter boats and even 6 packs found it easier to have a sinker release than having downrigger for 6, 8 or 20 anglers each. No way it will work. Sinker release with cannon ball is the way to go easier and less tangle for everyone.

    Biggest reason you never reel all the way to the flasher. I would have ignored this captain and just walked back or lifted the rod a lot higher. The flasher keeps pressure and control on the fish and when you reel up to much that fish now has the advantage over you.

    in cali begining of the season salmons from the front to the end tip of the tail should be a total of 24" and around july the keeper sized would be 20". but i feel that salmon lesser than 24" the meat isnt so tasty yet coz it hasnt build up its fish fat yet and also lots of bones to pick.

    @@jonathanle7161 I agree they get better and be I will let the small ones go too (as long as it's hooked so it doesn't kill the fish) but the little ones are great on the BBQ, put the whole fish on. I don't think it's technically legal in California though, at least in my managment zone it's "first 2 legal fish landed" so the reduced size limit to 20" has been a little bit strange.

    Went out on a party boat a week prior to this video and boated 42 Kings for 21 fisherman in 3 hours dragging frozen anchovies. I’m surprised at their poor results on a guided high quality six pack. This year has been touted as the best in the last six years. I’m currently in Portland. Going fishing on the Columbia on Saturday. The fish reports are dismal. Mismanagement of our fisheries will likely kill them. Sad.

    When I deckhanded we ALWAYS walked ALL fisherman through netting. Too many get lost at the boat. As they come in closestay on top of the netter & in 1 smooth motion as terminal tackle reaches rod tip stop winding and lift into net. This is where everyone always hesitates and your netter needs to be aggressive. I know YOU KNOW but ppl forget when their hearts are pumpin.

    Please don't take this as a negative comment - l just don't see why those guys are using setups that are losing so much lead - we Washingtonians us the same setups on the Columbia rivers plus other of our water systems when trolling both freshwater and saltwater without any problems especially if we place our lead weight ball on a slider. In closing, still awesome show regardless of my not understandings.

  • @stevevargas8650

    @stevevargas8650

    Calvin your absolutely right! We started using sliders 5 years ago, exactly what you would use for sturgeon. You still have the full fight of the fish because of the slider and what's great is for inexperienced anglers this setup is forgiving. When salmon turns racing back towards the boat cannon ball free falls keeping hook buried and secured. We switched from weight releases and have had much better luck not to mention I also had a problem with polluting the Ocean. I mean just think about it... Party boats average 20 to 30 limits a trip. That's 40 to 60 lead cannon balls on average not counting your under sized salmon that may trip release, now multiply that by however many salmon trips per season over the years and you have millions of pounds of lead sitting on the bottom of ocean. Sorry I'll stick to my downriggers and or slider rig combo. Last year we landed over 60 salmon right where this video was shot. And using the slider rig i believe we maybe lost 2 or 3. In my opinion the slider is a better setup especially keeping barbless hooks set.
