Northern banded newt with strange mouth

This little guy has put on a lot of weight over the winter. There seems to be something strange about his (correction; her) mouth though.

The drooping labial jowels are normal for females, and aid in suction when underwater.

His odd mouth did not stop him from eating.
Turns out it helps with feeding by aiding suction when underwater. Also, turns out he's a she.
