Tylototriton kweichowensis secreting toxins? Part 2

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Many newts and salamanders secrete toxic substances from glands in their skin to deter predators. Some are merely irritating or distasteful, while others can kill an adult human. I noticed patches of blue-grey on the head of this newt and on the knobs along it's spine, and it was staring at me and rearing up on it's hind legs in what might have been a threat display when I first noticed it. This species is supposed to be quite docile, but a few days ago, I introduced a new female that was possibly gravid (carrying eggs), so the males might be getting a bit hormonal now.

This one came from Wharf Aquatics, a pet-shop type place that had had 4 of them for a year without being able to sell them.

Wow nice! I was never able to get my Kiewchows to go aquatic or even enter the water. You ever breed them?

I've only had them for about a month, and they haven't bred so far. They spend most of their time on land, but they often go for a swim, or rest on rocks with their bum hanging in the water or something.

I already have 5, but I'm on the lookout for more to add to my breeding group. There's a lot of genetic variation in T. kweichowensis, tylototriton in general is a poorly documented genus, and it's not known at this time whether the various T. kweichowensis spp. are subspecies or closely related species, so ideally I'd like to get a breeding group of each kweichow variant. Unfortunately, Reptile City won't be able to help me; I'm in Scotland, and they're based in the US.
