I surfed North Shore 50 years ago. The pipe always only had a handful of surfers then. One of my best memory is surfing at a spot on the Northshore on Thanksgiving day. I was the only one in the water...perfect 6 foot waves. I’ve been back to Hawaii a few times, and because the shore has been so built up, I couldn’t find the spot again! I think it was a point break...the wave seemed to roll in, hit the point... After awhile two service men came out, but I knew where to sit to take off, so I caught wave after wave! Where in the heck was I? One of my other memories is catching the wave of the day at Pupakea on my new board that was shaped by Bill Stonebraker. I lived and surfed in Hawaii for 10 years. You know how much I miss surfing!!! I enjoy your videos very much. I surfed, well caught a wave and went straight when I was 70 and again when I was 74. Every time I watch surfing videos I am in pain, because I miss it so much!

Outstanding North Shore tour. In the future would love it if your explained the nuances of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd reefs on Pipeline. And the wave you caught last spring at Pipe was awesome.
@lol-em6bj

basically, each reef makes different waves. the 1st reef is where the hollow normal waves that you see in videos. typically 4-12 feet, 2nd reef is a little more steep and ofc further out, producing heavy barrels and waves around 20ft. 3rd reef is maybe the hardest as the swells can be over 30ft and very far out. the waves in 3rd reef are very steep and very hard to paddle out to.

I had surgery on my C7/T1 bone spurs from surfing that trapped my nerve.i understand the pain but I'm always positive and can't wait to get barrelled again. I went through 10 years of issues. Always keep smiling and be stoked and you'll get barrelled again.
Koa, thanks for really helping me keep the stoke alive, if only by a little, at a bad time in my life. Your vlogs are extremely therapeutic.
Great use of aerial footage to show the breaks and their relation to one another. The videos you make where you're explaining different aspects of surfing are great! You explain thinks in an easy to understand terms without sounding "superior" to beginning surfers or to non surfers who are just curious about the sport. I wish KZread and your videos existed when I was learning to surf! Wishing you a full recovery of your neck injury!!!
Such a great video!!! There can't be another spot on Earth blessed with such amazing waves and beaches. Bless the North Shore! Thanks for showing us all those amazing breaks.

When I lived on Oahu, I was a lifeguard down at Mokuleia Beach Park and Haleiwa Ali'i Beach Park. At Mokuleia there used to be a little trailer that I lived in with my roommate. It was the best job in the world. This was in 1980-83. There was a break there I think was call Dave star?? But we had that wave all to our self! I met Buzzy Kurbox on a flight back from Cali and invited him out there. We had such a good time. He bought MR, Shaun Thompson, Simon Anderson just to name a few. It was just a fun no pressure no crowds break that they could surf without people all over them. I just thought I'd ad another spot to your waves on the North Shore. 🤙
@kelly7873
3 жыл бұрын
It's "Day Star". The story I heard on how it got its name is somebody spent years building a boat on the beach right in front of the break. At that time the spot was known as Iron Boats. Just before the boat was finished the name "Day Star" was painted on.

Good luck Koa, Hope your back in the water by now. I had a shoulder injury that kept me out of the water for several months once and I know what it's like to watch your friends surf a great swell from the beach, There is one thing that you will get that makes your surfing suffer that is unavoidable. The doctors call it O.L.D. But i'm 54 and still catching waves. A little longer board but still stoked. Best wishes to you and yours from Florida

Right on! Left-overs?
"Thanks for the education and it's very helpful... Very awesome!!!" Can you please teach us about the surf beaches in Hawaii that are good for beginners, Advanced beginners, intermediate Surfers and so on and and what time of the year should we visit Hawaii to surf the South Shore and North Shore when visiting for vacation? In Hawaii are there sand breaks for people that don't have experience with reef breaks? Is there a way to prepare and train for pipeline or any of the waves of the North Shore before getting there, if where we live doesn't have powerful WAVES like Hawaii, which is most of the world??? Is the best way to learn how to surf the North Shore and pipeline, is simply to save up enough money to live and surf there for 3 to 6 months or longer and come back to train and surf there whenever we have the time and money? Can someone prepare in other surf locations around the world to include our local beach breaks which are no comparison to the North Shore to attempt to be ready to Surf there even though it will still be extremelyyy challenging obviously because it's a very unique and special wave surfers spend their "whole/entire" life trying to get better at surfing??? Thanks!!! Oh yeaaahhh, amazing channel and please keep posting and uploading because I will keep watching... Happy surfing from Virginia Beach!!!+++:))) Kyle

Ok you asked for a comment. Here we go. Brilliant video. I will check out your merchandise as well. Ok I’m 61 and from Cornwall uk. I love the north shore. I love it even when it’s flat. Love the energy. What I was interested in was I thought Pupakea was down by Foodland. Or is that just pupakea beach park. I know you guys dislike the tourists etc. We do in cornwall but I always show respect and the first time I surfed the north shore albeit badly I sat in the channel. I was talking to a couple of locals then all of a sudden a wave came through and a voice shouted Go England Go. I thought as I took off please don’t fall off. Please. I didn’t. !!! Then I was invited in to the take off zone. With that attitude in my 27 days on the north shore I only got the Hawaiian death stare once. Ha. Been a few times now. Brilliant video and thank you for posting.
Please explain how your shirts are “ super eco friendly “ dying to hear your response.

They also all had traditional Hawaiian names hundreds of years before “pipeline” Hawaiians created surfing and the history of these names is actually very sad and has a lot to do with loss of culture, land and people to native Hawaiians. Aloha Kakou have a good day all love 🤙🏿🤙🏿

Just watched a documentary on YT about the history of the Pipe Masters (would recommend). Pipeline was named by a Californian?? called...??? It was something to do with road works near by ie Caution Pipe Lines. Something like that. I used to surf a spot in NZ called Dinner Plates and Im still scratching my head about that!

I had neck pain for years. ART(active release technique) was what helped me. It is a specialty chiropractic technique that is alot like acupressure. I just realized I saw you at Masonboro when you visited. I was the dude walking up the path with you and Mason and Jack that day in the video. I was like that dude looks alot like Koa. Didn't realize it was actually you at the time.

I've never surf like this in my life but man this is so fascinating to look at and learn from. It's a whole different kind of culture and way of living I would say, would love to try this one day. I know nothing about the terms for waves and the lingo but still, super interesting just to listen to a person who lives this everyday.

We went to Hawaii more than twenty years ago, I caught a couple of tourist waves on the south shore and I was so stoked on surfing. North Shore is an awesome movie, with so much soul. I watched it so many times I wore the tape out. I watched it so many times I spotted a mistake they made.
That was great to get an idea of the layout of the North Shore. Thanks. Also out of the water in the UK with a sprained ankle. Feeling your frustration dude
