I live in the mountains. I do not push people off cliffs on crowded hikes. I hike some trails over 3 times a week. Also, I do not throw fits over crowded ski hills/ parks. Same concept, only limited amount of time/ space to score good runs. Truth is: this violence is unwarranted.

As a lifelong surfer from the age of eight (next year I'll be 70), I have to say the idea of surfers being somehow enlightened falls apart as soon as it gets crowded. Whether you are a local or a visitor it makes things better when you bring your good manners and, yes respect with you. There's a world full of numbskulls like Kala. But there's also a bunch of beautiful folks out there spreading good vibes if you choose to see them.

I know right. I think just try other places plenty of other places to surf. I surf in va beach and obx. Even though the waves arent the best the vibe here makes up for it. Every1 is nice . Also these are beautiful places. So i always thought that too. I always think thats my #1 priority.

Adam b its this attitude ^^^ that causes the problem. thinking you better than others and paddling/pressing further into peak to prove your worth is causing aggression. try sharing the space, wait your turn and enjoy the ocean or enter the competitions to prove your position in the world of surfing. and take your rubbish and effluent away from the beach also.

I know a guy who lives in Bend, Oregon. He told me that Jerry Lopez, one of the greatest Hawaiian surfers ever, and a Pipeline legend, moved to Bend because he didn't want his kids growing up in Hawaii. What's that tell ya?

i feel you and yes he does condone violence. growing up in nanakuli as a white kid i got bullied a lot when I was young and in the water i got stink eye wherever I went from locals like him. BTW, if any of you surfers are tired of that crap they're giving you in HI, you could drop down to nearby Rincon, PR. The waves aren't as big there but the locals are nice, hotels and restaurants reasonable, the girls are friendly, the water is warm, and the beer is cold!

Born and raised in Hawaii, Hawaiian dad and Haole mom, grew up surfing every day back in the 70s-80s. The racism is real. I felt it as a hapa kid (mixed race), and my dark skinned dad always had to make sure other surfers knew I was his daughter. True Hawaiian culture is all about aloha but too many people take their resentment towards haoles /non-locals too far. Hawaiian culture says you cannot own the ocean...the waves belong to no one and therefore to everyone. So sad that this situation has not changed. This is not respect. Instead they create a bad impression of Native Hawaiians and they aren’t even necessarily Hawaiian...just “locals”. The North Shore was my home as a child and I hate to see it this way now.

17yr airline employee and been going for 25+ yrs and been around the world a few times, thank you for being honest and telling the truth. The Japanese get a lot of unwarranted flack and hate. The education system doesn’t really help the bigots and prejudice people because they don’t have any good logic to back it up. Warrior culture?!? Not arguing that it’s not a warrior culture I’m just asking what wars did they win?!? They have almost a 0/100 record. Literally and financially, they have not won anything. Shoddy reporting, NYT. I'm a Hawaii resident, a journalist, a surfer, and a one-time New Yorker. Kala Alexander is a thug in the worst sense of that word. Giving him an uncontested point-of-view in this piece only serves as a PR opp for a guy trying to remake his image later in life. Do some real digging. Find the 'blond' surfer who got assaulted on the beach. Kelly Slater isn't going to provide you any depth on this topic; he benefits from the careful kowtow to da hui on this one.

I'm from Ireland and went to Hawaii for holidays. A local tried to fight me for no reason in the surf on Waikiki. Not a kid but a grown man. Embarrassing.

Went to The North Shore for the first time earlier this year. The vibe was friendly and mellow. I had a great time. My advice is to be friendly, patient and respectful in and out of the water, and the locals will respond in kind. It's the same anywhere you go as a visitor in the surfing world. Just don't expect to be on a set wave at Pipe. It's the most competitive lineup in the world. Those guys have paid their dues out there over many years and earned the right to be on the best waves. The thing is there's so many other world class spots there.

Respect is a two-way street. The concept of "respect" in misused by some locals in the same manner that inner-city gang members misuse it. The truth is, many "locals" show very little respect for anyone other than their own bros. Their reference to "give respect, get respect" is hollow and is lacks any credibility based on their own behavior. Apologies to the few locals who can understand what mutual respect actually means.

I ran across a lot of these guys when I lived on the North Shore back in 2005-8. They were always very friendly to me. I've never had a problem in the water except in two places...Charleston, SC by an idiot who thought he was much better than he actually was, and Monterey, CA by a spoiled rich guy who never grew up. These people mostly just ask that you acknowledge that they live there. It's not unreasonable, and they're super cool if you're super cool. The video is just media hype. I'm sure Kala agreed to do it because he needed money or something. I ran across the guy and had a really favorable impression. He's also a much more humble guy now that he's older.

This was partly why I choose to avoid short board surfing and go down the long boarding / wave ski / bodyboarding route - the community is a lot more pleasant - especially with wave skis where every fellow wave skier seems happy to see you even if you not local - maybe cos we are hated by everyone else but oh well :)

I went to a local beach in Maui with a rented board, second time ever trying to surf, very few foreigners on the waves. I asked a local about how to proceed. Not only did she teach me about respect in the 'line up', but safety, the nature of the reef, when the best time to come to the particular beach when the tide was right and the waves were best, she also taught me how to surf. She spent about twenty minutes with me, and I caught my first wave as a result. Never knew her name. She was a local, and obviously wanted me to accept and join the culture of surfing. It was crowded and there were people who were unfortunately ignorant. I had to bail on a wave because a guy, not a local, because he seemingly apologized in some European Language to me, cut in and fell in front me. For the record, for whatever clarification, I have blond hair and blue eyes.

Being ex military haloe stationed at Pearl Harbor, I used to surf the north shore and saw some of this. I was told to "get off the wave" or whatever a few times but never anything physical. Didn't stop me from surfing though. Those waves are too amazing to pass up.

I was a navy guy in the sixties who surfed Makaha most every weekend. The local boys from the area claimed beach and waves but after a few sessions they mellowed and actually became friendly, however my car was trashed and almost every time. Sea Spree and hippie girls, surfing the small contest around the island was a joy, maybe you won a Tee shirt or a plate lunch.

It's not their land anymore. The USA took it the same way every conquering culture takes over land of another culture. There is not a plot of land in the world that hasn't been occupied by numerous different cultures over time. It's just how things go. What makes Hawaii special is that the native Hawaiians didn't assimilate into the new, larger culture. Instead of letting their kids absorb the new ways from non-natives at school and gradually transition over to a blended culture, they taught them to resent the new occupiers and not take part. As a result, resentment is rampant and they have an average life expectancy of 62 years.

I lived Ohau for about 4 yrs went to college at U of H at Manoa. I had bleach blonde hair blue eyes, was constantly harassed in and out of the water. Dane Kealoha tried kicking me out at Pipe, because I paddled for a wave I knew he was not going to make the drop, he had no chance, but took he out on me. Was constantly threatened most times they did nothing because I was usually much bigger than them, but I knew that many had their big Samoan relatives on the beach near by, so I never threw a punch first. If you are white a especially with blonde hair the locals can be the biggest racist assholes

There's a lot of reason behind our behavior towards foreigners. Some people go to, albeit, inefficient and immature ways to convey their beliefs but in any case, there is reason behind our actions. If you study the history of the takeover on the Hawaiian colonies, as well as the multitude of negative American impacts on the islands that we see, you might understand our viewpoint a little better and avoid an altercation or two as well.

If what you're trying to say is that we should be appreciative of the products and trade the United States has brought to our islands, you hold a good point although it is somewhat unrelated to what I said, I still respect that, What I was trying to say is that we hold grudges for the negative changes the us brought to our island and the tactics the us used to take over the island. Personally if I had the choice, I'd rather the us keep its resins and whatnot to themselves and leave us alone because we were able to make our own surfboards in the ancient times so I'm sure we would be fine without them now, do you get what I'm trying to say?

I’m not a local and don’t claim to know all the details of past fights, but Pipeline is a notoriously dangerous, sometimes deadly, wave. You go around pulling rookie moves or snaking someone and jeopardizing their safety, you probably deserve a few punches.

These thugs stuck on their localism need to sit in prison for a while.

All those guys should remember the moment of the first wave caught. The good vibe, and the happiness of this simple moment. Surf supposed to be about that. All respect in the world does not make me as happy as the sea does.

I do understand the problems and the anger. But you can't tell me it's about respect when you attack and beat people up.

It was a bodyboarding comp and the surfer wouldn't leave the lineup. He also disrespected the guys on the jetskis. Not condoning any violence but that dude deserved a beating

Respect. Some don't understand the words they speak.

You can see that it has little to do with respect and everything to do with selfishness and wanting to have the waves to yourself.

It use to be 15 guys out was a crowd. Now there is 200 guys in the water. Nothing like taking off on a 20 foot wave and having some 14 year old drop in on you then paddle by you and say, stay off my waves!

I'd rather surf junk waves and be in peace ...

Aggression shows a lack of self control. Neither local nor non local owns the sea.

One of these Hawaiian guys on vacation at my local beach in Florida came at us aggressively out of no where, talking about how he was from the islands and we were surfing too close to his family (which was no where near them), he wasn't even surfing and was trying to fight all of us. We should have pounded his attitude into the sand but instead we took the high road and let him know that he was the kook of the beach. Spread love man, the water is life for all of us.

Rothman is a Hawaiian name? So his family was Hawaiian for hundreds of years

Once I went there after about three times during the winter and it was 20 foot for 9 days! Finally I surf sunset Beach! It was really rapping like a Northwest! I got over the shorebreak into a nice rip that pulled me right out into the greatest wave of ever seen! And then a 30-foot set popped up! It was perfect! Offshore warm! I took off dropped in on my bonzer! Thanks Mike Eaton! Giant peak! Lots of coral reef though! The greatest way if I ever caught in my life! Mahalo!

I lived on Oahu for 5 years, surfed the entire island. The only way to really surf the more popular breaks was with local friends. Haole was never used in kind...it was always derogatory and used to demean. Certain breaks were local only unless you went with a local friend. If not, you could expect some trouble. Didn't matter how deep you were on the wave...a lot of locals would drop in on you. A couple of times at Makaha the locals wanted to go to the beach to "beef" aka fight. I had many local friends I loved to surf with. Unfortunately, there were some looking to fight! Crazy part, surfed the other islands and didn't experience anywhere near the animosity as on Oahu. I love Hawaii and the people, but there is troubling side that still exists.

the locals turned aloha to ashola! its a public beach. play nice, take turns, yell, have fun. dont turn a passion into bs.

Just sounds like people being selfish about a good wave they live around. Respect would be just being nice to everyone and helping out each other, not beating them up because you got annoyed.

I visited Honolulu back in 2011 and I remember standing In line at a Subway ready to pay for my $5 foot long however when I got to the register to pay the sandwich maker said,”oh that’s for locals only.” The $5 foot long sign right in front of my face and outside on the subway sign did not say “for locals only.” There was a lot of other instances just like this so just an fyi before you plan on booking a trip that way. You’d have more fun visiting Mexico or the Caribbean’s where they treat decent people with some “respect” and kindness rather than waisting your money in Hawaii. FYI I don’t even surf nor went to see anyone surf. But If you do go visit Hawaii visit Pearl Harbor. Mad respect.

Indonesian has over 17,000 islands. Cheaper and plenty waves. Specially outside of Bali. Hawaii is an overrated skizism of entitlement. Then people move to the mainland and say "aloha" and "mahalo". 👏

I've been physically remove from the water while trying to learn. I "Don't belong in the water, (because) we know your people can't swim. We don't have time to babysit you." Be better when you're out there.

After watching this the first thing I thought is the demand of respect in Hawaii is exactly how it is in prison. Or so it appears.

As PT sez: respect begets respect. I was living on Maui in the late-60s when a group of Aussies arrived and they were loud, arrogant and disrespectful. They That's when I first heard them referred to as the "Texans of the South Pacific" and they moved on, or were moved on, fairly quickly. What a difference they were to the Aussies I first met in SoCal in the early-60s. They were great guys ... guys like Midget Farrelly. Then surfing itself had become more aggressive by the late-60s. And by the time the Aussies were breaking down doors the whole surfing ethic had change, But I don't think behaving like thugs solves anything.

just because someone is loud does not mean they are being disrespectful. the pack is a bunch of A holes. Its a public beach. take turns, yell, have fun, and get along instead of acting like low life A holes. The pack makes a lot of surfers look like fools. so does sloppy writing

Kala says he puts a lot of emphasis into respect when in reality he is just the "likes to fight" dude.

I surfed a lot in late 70',80'90' and early 2000 and never had issues with locals when I traveled away from my home break, heard story's of Hawaii and had no desire to spend the time and money for that crap.

This is all BULL. The Hawaiians are violent, protective and hostile toward the halowes (whites or non-native Hawaiians). In the 1940's we lived in Hawaii, I can remember my older brother coming home from school, every day with either a split lip, broken nose, or black eye, with cuts and bruises!!! It was so bad because he got cornered and ganged up on every day in the the locker room! He quit school just a month before graduation and went to main land and joined the Navy!!! Myself , WHEN I got to college, was spit on, kicked off sidewalks, tripped, pushed and my books bushed out from underneath my arms! I was blond and blue eyed... shame on me!!! A Japanese boy had been observing, and offered to walk me to and from classes. After he started walking me to class, no more trouble! He was built like a sumo wrestler! I quit school in Hawaii eventually and came to the mainland to finish my collage education!!!

this "wolf pak " is out of order

First surfed the North Shore in Dec of 1964. It was well known that “visitors” were not welcome but I respected their turf and had no problems. First judge Kelly Slater at the Dec 84 USSF Championships at Makaha and then surfed with him on the North Shore before we returned to the “mainland”. Great memories and friends as SideWalk Surfers rule our Lord’s world.

I'm not a surfer, though I spent time in beautiful waters of Hawaii. I was severely disrespected by Hawaiians before I even had an opportunity to show proper respect to the natives. My experience is that the Islanders there are the most racist people as whole, that I've met in any of my travels. I have fantastic memories of the Hawaiian islands, but I will always be wary and distrustful of the Hawaiians, and folks that live there. My ancestors never ruined their way of life, nor did I - but they seem have deeply vengeful spirits and display it to folks who have never harmed them and do not intend to. My memories will always be tarnished by the petty meanness I saw every day in the people there.

CA surfers defend their spots with the same aggression. These same surfers then travel to the islands and think they can just paddle out anywhere and drop in. Lived and surfed Diego for 7 years, I know this.

+John Schleusener pretty true. Locals in La Jolla and the OB jetty can get pretty territorial. Even when you're not out there cutting them off. I've been snaked more at the jetty on a shitty day than great days at Trestles.

He moved to Hawaii, respected the local surfers and they took him in. His Hanai into some of the local north shore families, and when it came time to Mālama them, or care for those who took him in, he did so. His methods, like Kalā's, may have been unorthodox, and Da Hui, like the wolf pack may have been made up of young, kinda scrappy, local guys, but they have a point. I didn't grow up on the north shore, but I grew up a stone throw away from Makaha Surf beach, and I gotta tell you the guys out there are the same. It's their water, their families have surfed there for generations, and so they feel like it's their home. It's like if someone walks in my house with their shoes on and makes my floor dirty, I freak out, because it's my house. You go to their beach and drop in and hurt someone, or leave rubbish around, or say bad things about them or their ohana, they get nuts... They are human, and surfers tend to be more human than most. What I mean is, they are deeply invested in surf

+Johnson Beyer he's not a hypocrite. He is an example for how people from other places should behave when they come here. He is a non-local who had respect for the people and for they way things are, and as a result he eventually became a "local"

the over their ability remark always gets me.

I grew up on Oahu in the 70's. A haole, and even though I found refuge in the water as a surfer, the locals would torment me relentlessly at school. I later found out, many years later, that it is called "Plantation Mentality" Really stupid stuff. But hey, I got a lot of waves!

Enjoyed surfing in the 60s 70s....duchebags have taken over the sport esp in Cali. Back then I surfed Makaha with friendly Hawaiian guys no problem.

Its honestly hard to find a beach with no one else surfing now and I live in Australia, I'm learning to surf so i'm constantly trying to find a place with not many others, people in Aus will respect the line up for the most part, but if you crash out , your done you will get snaked all day. I would suggesting if your not a great surfer leave the famous Breaks to the locals and great surfers, otherwise my mate whos very good the way he deals with it is hes just 10x fitter than everyone and can catch any wave he wants.
