Norm Macdonald's Weekend Update - The Whole Damn Thing (Part 2)

This video seeks to understand the meaning behind the humour presented in Macdonald's jokes, and why it does or does not hold up today.
Macdonald's version of "Weekend Update" often included references to prison rape, crack whores, and the Germans' love of Baywatch star David Hasselhoff. He would occasionally deliver a piece of news, then take out his personal compact tape recorder and leave a "note to self" relevant to what he just discussed. He commonly used Frank Stallone as a non-sequitur punchline.
Macdonald repeatedly ridiculed public figures such as Marion Barry, Bill Clinton, Michael Jackson, and O. J. Simpson. Throughout Simpson's murder trial, Macdonald constantly pilloried the former football star, often heavily implying Simpson was guilty of the brutal slaying of his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman. In the broadcast following Simpson's acquittal, Macdonald opened "Weekend Update" by saying: "Well, it is finally official: murder is legal in the state of California."

Hearing Norm do update unlocks a core memory I didn't know exists. My parents use to watch SNL when I was growing up, and this takes me right back. A warm nostalgia.
Falling asleep to this tonight, RIP Norm.

This has been pulled up so many nights while I'm relaxing, it's great, but I'm saddened. I do stand-up myself, and fantasize about meeting him...can't get enough. That last Letterman appearance gets my waterworks going every time.

In Norms voice. It should be noted that Paul slept well on his Temperpedic piller, waking up alive. Paul found that being alive is the goodest thing there is. And uh it's not like being alive is so good, it's that it's soooo bad to be dead. Compared to being smothered in dirt...

Uh,what a loser that guy was.The last thing he did was lose.He was fighting a brave battle but at the end I guess he got kind of cowardly. But you gotta give it to the battle cancer..Also,and I'm sure that when you die,the cancer also dies.So that to me is not a loss but a draw."..Norm Macdonald...

Confession; I did not like Norm at first. I really liked Dennis Miller. Kevin Nealan was dry (took me a while). After a few episodes I warmed up. Now, he is up there at the top for me. Such a cruel world; Norm has left and OJ still remains, sipping drinks in the shade at the Golf Course, edit; day dreaming and gloating about how he got away with it, but deserves more Love. Norm HAD to laugh at that one:)

It's sad loved Norm
Not really the same without seeing his face, because his expressions were part of his delivery. His expression could make you laugh as much as the jokes. His comedy was about truth. He said it was not a good idea, or really truthful, to make fun of someone who you completely disagreed with politically. I think he was a libertarian or at least a conservative.. He was a big fan of George W. Bush. I think he also wrote a lot of the comedy for The Norn Show. I only wish he had shared with the world that he was dying of cancer. It was a shock to a lot of people.

You forget that people wanted to make their own choices as to how to die...with dignity. Dr. Kevorkian didn't want to die, at least not in pain. Those people who insisted on endless years of life support? If their family members who were in comas truly believed they had a chance of reviving and had expressed that opinion without bankrupting their families-go for it. But for two sides of a family (spouse vs parents), knowing how much everything costs? Very few inmates on Death Row willingly go down. In the state systems, it takes 15-20 years. What happens to those who are innocent? A very few have waived their appeal options (the Oklahoma bomber (168 victims) plus other federal Death Row inmates. It's difficult to understand suicide. I think sometimes they're selfish if they aren't sick. Had a co-worker who left a note saying it was his wife's fault. He always claimed she was mentally ill, but who sets up a scenario in their house for the wife to find? People also function like they'll live eternally. We know better. I would like for everyone to live HAPPILY. But getting out of here alive? Not a reasonable option.

Then I just reencoded them back together!
Norm could care less about a joke’s punchline or setup. He was concerned with defining the elements of the joke clearly. His smile before the joke conveyed the target of the joke is a highly sensitive subject (example: homosexuality). By the time the punchline comes, the audience has received so much validation with crazy current events, we want another story. My main problem with Norm…he was just not gay enough. Ya know? Those gays?
I think Norm surpassed George Carlin in using brute honesty in their humor. I admire that. I think Joan Rivers' honesty about M.O. cost her life. Maybe George went early, too. Tim Russert? Anybody? Norm? Anybody?
