@@davidfox6630 honestly it is nearly impossible to tell. One of the main things to look for is they don't keep records. and one thing that is both a good flag and a bad flag is if they have a great it is fixed as soon as they hear about it. And disclosed as soon as the period of vulnerability has expired (ie. Cert expired/replaced). Until you have something like that you have to take them at their word. Also being not based in the u.s. is also a major plus. In the US the government can request a wiretap and they can't tell you that you are being monitored. Yay insufficient accountability and oversight!

So, as an expert who works in network & security, I want to make a few points here. Even though this security key was compromised, those compromising would not have had ANY way to compromise your data. Just because a person gains the security key to your VPNs, the only VPNs you are able to connect to are those listed in the app. The remote hackers, had NO way to adding their servers to the list of authorized servers. Secondly, they had no way to spoof a connection server with DNS, as they do not have the certificates needed (nor a way to push a new server to the app) to allow this to happen. The only way they would be able to get any information is if they were able to compromise a live server, run software on that server that actively monitors the traffic going to that server, and then decrypt the SSL traffic to see any data. This is in no way a breech of your personal privacy, or data. It is just a breech of a VPN key, that is randomized, and localized for every server. Also, to clarify I am not defending NordVPN, nor am I an employee, or advocate in any way. I do not gain any monetary benefit for stating this information. I just feel the need to clarify these things from a technological perspective. Security is defense in depth, and they did not even get to the 1st layer.

@Chris , you would be surprised what VPN’s log, they are usual required by governments as to not be taken to court. And if you believe IP is the only way to identify you I hate to break it to you but that hasn’t really been a reliable source for decades, IP of the average user is not likely to be static. Your computer information, spec and usage habits are all logged and can better identify you than any IP could. No VPN can block that.

This guy is abosutly not trust worthy for any tech related stuff. This should be a wake up call for anyone who watches those channels for the knowledge rather then the crazy childish builds. LEARN ABOUT THE FUNCTION OF A VPN! Not what it promises you. People still can track you down if they would want to, the server WILL save data (authentication and maybe worse too). Their website also still says: "We, NordVPN, confirm that we take full control of our infrastructure. It has never been compromised or suffered a data breach. NordVPN is actually a really shitty company. I was using their services for some time a year ago and i was disappointed. Their servers are so bad, they can´t handle spikes in the daily hours with highest traffic, the service just kept disconnecting during that time of day (usually around 6-8 PM). Also support is non-existent, just a robot sending messages and no one really cares about any user issues. They´re on top only because they spend a LOT of money for marketing purposes.

In a broad sense you're correct, but in this specific case the truth is found between those quotes. This attack is not a broad spectrum attack, it really is a pin-point MITM attack that has such a complex setup with a terribly poor payoff that no hacker would ever go through the trouble. The biggest misunderstanding here is that the hacker did not intercept some "NordVPN Master Key" that allows them to decrypt all encrypted tunnel traffic. They didn't even steal the keys to any of NordVPNs servers. They stole an old expired TLS certificate that would allow them to make a cloned website of NordVPN[dot]com and NOT have the "This connection is unsecured" warning pop up. They would still have to somehow modify the DNS record of the individual target to repoint the NordVPN website request to their own hosted IP. Oh, and they'd also have to run a time spoof attack on the target to spoof their system time to before March 8th 2018 when the certificate expired. You might have seen my similar comments in a couple threads here, but the truth is you are buying into the forced narrative. I couldn't possibly stem the tide of thoughtless agreeance here, but I hope this will at least encourage you to not join in on the meritless bashing of a great company.

What's so ironic about it? VPN exists only to hide your identity, has nothing to do with security on their part. But ofcourse every internet service must have top security especially VPNs but still it's not ironic at all.
