The problem with everyone but NVidia is that you can expect a good powerful competitor to take 10 years to reach NVidia's driver quality in overhead and broad software compatibility. Look, AMD has been chipping away at it for 20 years and they're still not quite there yet. Then again maybe Vulkan will be our Lord and Saviour, DirectX platform isn't terribly hard to implement as apparently even Intel with its two left hands is kinda managing to do that, and OpenGL will be eventually just a high-quality collaboratively developed layer over Vulkan that everyone can reuse, probably from the MESA team, propped up by Intel, AMD, ARM, Qualcomm and Broadcom and whomever else. But this does sound like a dream more than a realistic assessment.

@@omfgpowned I reckon it would still be a decent gaming cpu for at least another year or two. The i5-750 lasted me 9 years (until 2019) because it OC'd over 1.2 GHz above stock. And that was in everyday use on air cooling. Although one reason I didn't upgrade sooner (and switched to AMD when I did) was because Intel has been changing sockets every generation since. If I could have dropped a newer processor into the same LGA1156 socket, Intel would have gotten more money from me. Now they got zero.

You don't "have" to go with Intel for a gaming rig, but the entire build is about being overly robust and maximizing gaming performance, and Intel still wins that race, albeit marginally, as compared to the past. I say this as someone who suffered through Bulldozer, blindly adopted and enjoyed the 1700x and recently upgraded to the 3700x, and I'm very happy with it. I love AMD, and they crush Intel on cost:performance, especially multicore, but they are still slightly behind in gaming FPS, but that's fine, because the overall value is still better, for anyone who does anything other than "just gaming."

Intel is marketing 1.74x-2.09x increase in performance per dollar for the Cascade lake X Vs Skylake X. This is how I believe they will do it: (i) increase of stock frequencies by around 10%. For example, compared to the Skylake X 7900X that has an all-core turbo boost of 4GHz, the Cascade Lake X 10900X will be have an all-core turbo of 4.4GHz. Similarly, they will increase the single-core turbo 2.0 from 4.3GHz to 4.7GHz and the single-core turbo 3.0 from 4.5GHz to 5GHz. (ii) increase in IPC by 3-5% by reducing the latency of the mesh topology (and bringing it closer to the levels of ring bus) (iii) increase in IPC by 3-5% by increasing the L3 cache while reducing the latency of accessing it. Remember that Intel already increased the L3 cache for the Skylake X Refresh chips by switching from the LLC chip to the HCC chip and by allowing access to the cache of some of the disabled cores. The 10 core 7900X had 13.75MB L3 cache while the 9900X had 19.25MB. However, there was a latency penalty for accessing that extra cache resulting to almost zero increase in performance. It is very possible that after a year Intel has found a way to access that extra cache with reduced latency thereby increasing performance. (iv) so with the above Intel could have 1.17x-1.21x performance increase. The rest of the performance per dollar (PPD) increase will come from price reductions. To achieve a PPD increase of 1.74 they will need to drop the prices by 30-33% while to achieve a PPD increase of 2.09 they will need to drop the prices by 42-44%. (v) so the 10 core part will be around $555-$575 in the best case and $663-$692 in the worst case. My personal guess would be $589. For the 18core part my guess is that it will drop at least down to $1399 but Intel might surprise us and drop it all the way down to $1199.

I jumped from a i5 8400 to an i7 8700 non K and drastically improved FPS in a lot of games. I didn't need to go out to buy an entirely new motherboard either. So if I wanted an AMD at a similar power level I'd had to shelf out more money. Quite a bit more in fact. Now the reason I didn't go with the K version was because I'm not an overclocker type. Also the Non K ran at lower temps too so I could install a Notcua L9i on it. All though temps go a bit high in certain games. Near 100 C mark. Getting a Watercooling solution instead.

I want this chip to last me as long as my 2500K I had before it did (so 2024?), but difference will be on this platform can make a big core count upgrade, sell my old CPU, stick with the same platform instead of ditching entire platform, and have minimal downtime. And because of DX12 and the way chips like you said hitting a frequency wall so adding cores, hoping game developers work with what they got and use these New APIs towards that. As for GPU, New 7nm Nvidia cards due 2020, and AMD hopefully going to drop some competition at the high end, so my GTX1080 I got in 2016 gonna last at least 4 years (from 2016) which is ideally how long I keep GPUs. I got it running at 2214MHz core stable (custom loop, EK block) and it benches between the 2060 Super and 2070 Super, and closer to the latter, so I'm happy for now. As long as it can play Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p at respectable settings I'm happy till next gen GPUs.

Hey Jay... As an individual who has been working on the 7nm conundrum with those who get it... there are a couple of problems.. 1 is that operable v-core voltage at >1.3v is still causing overheating issues which is why we have been lowering that v-core and using it as a mobile processor platform. 2. The non soldered tp"s are a product of labor issues and the toxicity levels associated with its installation... that is why the thermal compounds are being used. There are more than one problem with the etching process at 7nm... the biggest being reflectivity from heat across transistors. 10nm outperforms 7 when core voltage is lowered far enough to offset this issue. The problem is for real and being worked on. If it were as simple as sending processors out in retail packaging and the public being okay with less than 100% results then you would already have one in your hand.

If AMD can keep their higher IPC and match Intel's clock speed, then there will be one clear winner in CPUs. Right now, Intel is good for a non-streamer and AMD is a no-brainer for a streamer due to those extra threads.

I have an 1800x that I bought in 2017 just before gen 2 (well the 2000 series) came out and I freaking love it for my workstation/gaming system. I use the 8 cores and 32GB 3000MHz RAM for my AI research and school projects. We just built a 24 core epyc system for neural network training and moving VM's from one host to another and it is ridiculous for spending only $2000US. The intel equivalent was over twice as much once you included board and CPU(s) and if it came from an OEM it was 8k minimum. Not an AMD fanboy but I'm on the AMD bandwagon for the time being.

Actually quite helpful. I got an X570 board but needed to save up to get the 3900X. I started getting cold feet when it's been out of stock for so long, plus the price was creeping up, meanwhile the 9900KF was down to $410, and the KS on the way. So the "if you're building an AMD PC right now, stay the course" is reassuring.

@@cameronb2765 so you're saying you upgrade every 1-3 years? High end cpu? That's stupid. If you top high end cpu, it will be good for another 5 years. And you see, ryzen 1000 launched in 2017. And now, those motherboards doesn't support Ryzen 3000 after just 2 years. You think if person bought modt high end AM5 socket cpu, that he will upgrade 2-3 years later? No, he won't. And if he already had good intel system, and he wanted to "get off Intel, because its overpriced", that's just fanboyism. You already have good system, and you will change it, because intel is overpriced. But you already have it, so he spent even more money to get new mobo and cpu, because of fanboyism. And if you buy high end cooler for 80-110$, it will last atleast 5 years (atleast 7 years for air cooler). So you are gonna get good cooler, which will keep your cpu and help other components be cool. And not everyone is in the Australia. He could be in USA. You don't know, so you can't compare prices. If he was in USA and bought 3800x over 9900KF, then it was horrible choice. You could've spent few dollars more on 9900kf and get around 5-20 fps more. And as i said, cooler you buy will last long time. Also it will be easier to sell 9900KF, than 3800x, because everyone knows that 9900kf is better than 3800x .

I’m glad I watched this. Been planning on building a rig for a while. I’ve settled on a Luxe 2 case (if I could find any in stock.) I think I’ll get the case when I can and wait closer to Black Friday to purchase parts for it. Was planning on using a 9900k but if I can a better processor for the same price I think I might wait. Or snag a 9900k on sale when they drop the price. Btw need you to do something with that Luxe 2 case so you can tell me the ins and outs of it.

I spent 50$ for dual channel ram and I was shock that this Rysen APU has CPU that is equivalent score of i7-4970K in CPU-Z . To sum up . I spent 200$ for CPU+GPU+motherboard+ram rather that spend 200$ for a used CPU.
