I won the Danish championships by copying almost all my moves from Norberts routine. I even used the same music (jean michelle jarre) he was such an inspiration!!

One of the best performance I ever saw live, skating music made by the French Jean Michel Jarre.

Ich kenne ihn noch aus seinen aktiven Zeiten und der war einfach Klasse. Er lief zu flotter Musik, und begeisterte seine Fans immer aufs Neue. Norbert war damals der Beste und ich ein riesiger Fan von ihm. Schön hier mal wieder einen Lauf von ihm zu sehen. In den vergangenen Jahren ist es ja leider sehr still um ihn geworden. Im Dschungelcämp konnt er mit den anderen Charateren leider nicht mithalten, soll froh sein, dass er wieder draußen ist.

Norbert war sehr gut. 🇩🇪⛸️⛸️🌹🌹🌹Auch im März 2021 sehenswert.

love the skating...he always pushed the envelope and stayed true to his style of skating...one of the most stylistic skaters of the 20th century...

I know him, since he is skating. He was the grand Chameur on the ICE.

I can tell from this video the Germs in Dortmund for this competition loved Norbert, and part of it was his unapologetic conviction in skating with his unique avant-garde style and choreography. Audiences like seeing skaters who are different once in a while. I remember watching young Norbert on the ice in Oberstdorf (his training rink) in about 1976 and he hadn't taken his style quite this far yet, but he wasn't inhibited. He wasn't a boring robot skater then either. When he went pro, he was a good show skater and audiences liked him a lot. One other skater who had style somewhat similar to Norbert's was Brian Orser. Norbert and all male skaters of this time benefited from the style liberation which occurred immediately after the 1976 Olympics, thanks to Curry and Cranston. Guys no longer had to skate around like scarecrows, with their palms always facing down or their arms rarely going above shoulder level. And if certain conservative coaches or judges didn't like it, well, they were left in the dust. As another person in the comments mentions, Norbert doesn't do a triple Axel here, as the announcer says. They weren't all that common then. Brian Orser landed the first triple axel in the Olympics a year later, 1984. And Verne Taylor (Canada) landed the first triple axel in competition at the 1978 World Championships.

The quality of this recording - 37 years later - is just fabulous. Thank you so much for posting. I’m on tenterhooks when he jumps as he veers off the vertical axis quite significantly sometimes but somehow holds it together for the landings 😳

Ottawa and the World Championships - 1984: After skating the second of his compulsory figures and seeing the marks, Schramm went over to the referee, shook the referee's hand and walked off the ice. He did not skate the third and final figure and withdrew from the Men's event. This was the end of his "amateur" career...and unfortunately, we in attendance did not have the opportunity to see either his short or long at Worlds that year....

@npe1 　Yes, that was a 2A, but Schramm had planned a 3A there that season. I never saw him land one, but everyone was talking about how he would be unbeatable if he gets a 3A into his routine. I, too, prefer Cerne's skating, but the judges absolutely LOVED Schramm between 82 and 83. Schramm DID change the sport w/ his non-traditional approach, still... I was delighted, though, when Cerne unexpectedly placed 2nd at 84 Euros!!!

Does anybody know how he did in 1984 Olympics? I have never seen footage of his LP. I don't know if he skated badly or if the judges buried him for political reasons. I heard the German skating federation turned on him in 1983/1984, maybe because he switched coaches? He claims he was undermarked in figures but I wonder if the same was true in free skating that year.

der axel hier in dieser kür war doppelt! norbert hat nie nen dreifachen axel in einem wettkampf gestanden bzw. garnicht versucht.

versucht schon... aber nie einen sauber gestanden..... und dieser hier war eindeutig doppelt... da war beim Moderator der Wunsch der Vater des Gedanken... manchmal sieht man auch das, was man sehen will :-)

The commentator gets it wrong at 1:00. He says Norbert does a triple axel (dreifach) when in fact he only does a double. However, this was probably Norbert's best performance, although personally I always preferred Rudi Cerne's skating - smoother, more classical and artistic in the style of John Curry. I have to say I cringe at that final spin Norbert does - it might have been innovative but it was bloody ugly!

His facial expressions and gesture are ridiculous.

@nondescriptnyc I agree, but while the judges loved him around 82/83, he never really came close to threatening Scott Hamilton at Worlds. Yes he had some non traditional moves but non traditional can also be ugly n I have to say I thought his moves were ugly. Never really a fan as you can tell (LOL!) and I was delighted when Fadeev and Cerne beat him in 84 Euros.

ich fand norbert schramm nie besonders toll und zudem auch noch hässlich :-) und mit seinen komischen pirouetten ist er speziell zum schluss doch wohl allen auf die nerven gegangen, oder ....da lob ich mir rudi cerne und brian orser !!!

Rudi gerne war hässlich und hat nichts drauf gehabt ausser Standart Eislauf der hatte schiss was neues zu machen!! Schramm ist wegen seiner neuen Ideen immer übersehen worden! Rudi gerne sieht doch aus wie jedermann nichts besonderes!!!😂😂😂

Rudi Cerne ist ein unglaublich guter Moderator, bei Aktenzeichen und auch im Sport, ein sehr sympathischer Mann.Als Eiskunstläufer aber war Norbert Schramm ein innovativer Vorreiter...für moderneres Eiskunstlaufen.Norbert Schramm flogen wegen seiner Leistungen länderübergreifend die Sympathien zu. Hier irgendwen als hässlichen Vogel zu betiteln...einfach nur unterirdischer absolut unsachlicher Dünnpfiff.
