yes. I use a colossus roller from purdy to really get in there. You need to water down the elastomeric paint a bit though so that the roller can actually pick it up and move it nicely.

Sounds like yes.... normally anyway. Especially when it's got deep crevices. I have a fireplace that was painted but the they didn't back roll. Tons of unpainted pits and crevices. Stucco could do the same I suppose... especially new stucco=pourus.

Thank you for this video!! it was helpful. I didn't know about adhesion and lengthening the life of the paint by back rolling. I sprayed a 100ish year old house with paint that was cracked even after scraping and powerwashing, and now I realize the finish would be enhanced and the adhesion and the paint life lengthened if I back rolled, or back brushed it. Thank you!!!

Spray paint videos on youtube are riddled with spiteful comments about not backrolling/brushing. In my time as a DIYer I have found that there are many professionals that give advice based on tribal knowledge vs merit or cause and effect. Much of that knowledge ends up being overkill or just plain wrong. Many of them have done it a certain way all their lives and get downright hostile if you tell them there is another way. Understandable, but I'm a weekend warrior on stuff like this and if I can save 40% of the time and still get 90% of the quality, I'm going to do it. Again, really appreciate the detailed explanation of when and when not to backroll. A lot of good information conveyed in a very short time. Perfect video.

Thanks again for another of your great video’s. Tomorrow spraying my first interior room that I did board and batten and going to be all same color so spraying makes sense. I usually roll as sprayer clean up usually in the end doesn’t make spraying faster (for me) so after watching a ton of your videos prior to painting kitchen cabinets in my last house using Renner after watching your video on manufacturing visit they turned out amazing. So tomorrow hoping my room is half as good as that. Using my Graco X5 with 20” extension and graco LP 515 tip. This video was very informative. Thanks again.

My issue with not back rolling an interior wall is that somewhere down the road you or the owner are going to have do do touch ups. It’s not reasonable to expect that they are going to bust out the sprayer to do minor touch ups indoors. By just spraying initially, it’s highly likely that the touch up on the wall with a roller is going to stand out like a sore thumb.

Question on backrolling primer for new Drywall: I had spray primed and backrolled my basement with a high end primer , then sprayed 2 coats paint on top. My wife didn't like the finish with the roller so she asked me not roll upstairs. I proceeded to blow off the dust and apply 2 coats of primer (not as thick since I was not backrolling) sanding each time in between in 3 rooms upstairs and then spray paint the finish. She and I both like the finish better, but I have concerns with the adhesion. She wants me to spray the rest of the house without backrolling. My question would be, is there any way of doing this where adhesion is not a problem for primer? Will I be peeling the paint off the walls in those three rooms?

I painted my exterior of my house with a roller and brush. It was a lot harder than painting interior. I spent less than 500$ I used behr marquee paint. My question after watching your videos for much needed motivation is how do you cut in the exterior stucco? I have basic dash or popcorn finish and I had to go back and forth to get the paint unto the pits. The roller had no problems. Thanks for the vids.

It's absolutely OK! I recently painted a whole home interior with the same color on ceiling, walls and trim. Ceiling was flat paint, walls were satin and the trim (and doors) were semigloss. All the same off-white. Looked fantastic! Since the light never hits walls and ceiling the same it looked like a different color.

I figured back rolling was so that the paint flash was even (the same), and the wall could be touched up without spraying. In my experience (with cheap paint at apartments) sprayed walls are a different color versus rolled walls, even though the paint is the exact same, from there same bucket. If we don't back roll, when the flooring guys mess up the walls, and we have to touch-up, the paint won't match unless we spray. Is this a product of the cheap paint we are using? Or something else?

I have a porous surface garage interior that has the old black wallboard sheeting on the outside, dotted with hundreds of repaired plastered break outs from the later-installed vinyl siding nails, bare plywood along the bottom 2 feet, and bare wood studs. Do I spray first and then back roll, or back roll and then spray, or maybe I shouldn't be spraying at all? Until now, I was thinking airless spraying, since you don't thin the paint, would cover and penetrate better but I don't know anything about airless spraying other than your videos.

I can't seem to spray ceilings, having so much troubles, i get it dialed in and test sprays look good but the finished product is wavy and flashy. The wet paint looks like its even and i overlap with 50 percent but I can't make it happen. Tried 521 tip. 623 tip 517 tip. I had a helper and we back rolled and that brang on new problems. Used a 13mm roller the first go and it made some nasty texture. Sanded tried with a 10mm and it made a choppy roller like it was bouncing along on the paint only it wasn't. Can't seem to figure it out unfortunately. Using a graco 395. Wondering if the pump is maybe going. Seems to spray choppy versus a consistent spray

I used to back roll all my houses that were previously painted hardiplank too. I came to the same conclusion and not only was I working faster but the finish is that much nicer. But doing so technically voids the warranty that Sherwin Williams has on their paint, whatever that is actually worth

No that's why I bought a sprayer to begin with so I don't have to back roll

What happens if youve sprayed brand new plaster with1 or 2 primer coats but forgot to backroll, would it be worth putting a 2nd or 3rd undercoat on and then backroll it or just put a topcoat on and backroll that? Or would it be useless to do any backrolling because you forgotnto backroll the first undercoat?? Please help

I would backroll a primer spray first coat of paint then backroĺl final coat of paint and you'll be alright

Which roller system would you recommend for exterior semi-smooth stucco painting, the inner feed or the spray and back roll system?

How does he finish a drywall wall with no mud on the open field for a smooth finish?

About how long do I have to back roll the paint I just sprayed on? The questions comes more from the fact that I would be painting alone, so should I do a wall then roll it or go a short distance roll or what?

Normally if working alone, spray a wall, then back roll that wall. It depends on the substrate, raw, or new drywall, will be more porous and soak up the paint faster, and dry faster. So I would spray a wall, then back roll.

So on new smooth plaster you'd backroll your mistcoat to get penetration on sealing coat but not the topcoats?
