    Honk out to my fellow Canadian! You forgot to mention that Flotrol is amazing to help wash your paint brushes. It really breaks down the dried paint on the bristles and kind of works as a Paint Brush hair conditioner. Brushes are restored to almost new! Love my Flotrol!!! Right... 2.5" Slanted paintbrush. Was just checking to make sure I was going to use the right sized brush. Thanks son!

    One extra tip is to use some paintable caulk on corner gaps and the top of the baseboard if its not been done, the finish looks more professional this way. (As a painter I still see lots of houses where this has never been done) Also my advice is that trim/base is the place to splurge on the most expensive paints - it covers better, has a nicer finish, and reduces the need for more coats while giving the best washability/durability. Unless you are a little more skilled, avoid waterborne alkyd paints.

    Awesome video! Our home has the old style stained/varnished wood. But it was built in 1983 so it’s not the richer stuff from earlier days! I’m 60 now, but back when I was 20 I worked with a professional painter. He could lay out paint without tape. Really incredible work. He called it fluid line painting. He also told us that we were to load the brush and not swipe the edge of the can! Well my hands aren’t as steady anymore, so I’ll go with the tape. Also thanks for the reminder about TSP.

    One added tip for removing the painter's tape to help prevent peeling the paint. Take a utility knife with a sharp blade and run it along the edge of the painted piece and the tape. Doesn't take much pressure, just the weight of the knife will work the majority of the time. It will help give a nice crisp edge and prevent the tape from pulling the paint off the piece you just painted. Also helps to keep the tape from tearing in the event you got too much paint on the tape.

    @@dreid4760 No, you can paint a second coat within an hour or even a few hours and the paint will be dry to the touch, but has not fully hardened. just remove the tape within a couple of hours of completing the second coat. I usually finish up, wait about 15 -20 minutes and pull the tape. Also, pull the tape off at a steep angle, so the tape rolls over itself as you pull it off, you get a better edge this way. Excellent information. I used to work for a stucco and plaster company. We had to cover everything unless it was dirt on the ground. Many times due to bosses telling us to hurry up. We had to pull tape while the material was wet. The finish is the thickness of the aggregate. When we pulled tape. We would start at one end and get a couple of inches free. Grab the inside corner and fold it back forming and angle and pull the edge at an angle. There is only one point of release right at the bend. This way the finish wont pull off. I learned it this way and it works for me. This works on texture also.

    I’m taking a break right now as I’m painting my bedroom. I’ve seen several videos on painting and the one thing I read over and over is to buy a good brush. I was guilty of purchasing cheap brushes in the past, but this time I got good ones. I can’t believe the difference! The paint went where I wanted it to go and not on the ceiling or baseboards. I’ll never buy cheap brushes again. After taking off the tape the wrong way, I now have to touch up in areas where the paint came off. Lesson learned! Thanks for the info. After getting the liquid stuff you mentioned, I’ll start my baseboards. 😊🙏🏼🌷

I've seen so many bad paint jobs where the painter (homeowner) had no concept of paint leveling. The brush marks and paint drips (didn't pull nails off the wall) are so bad that no amount of sanding will get them out. Had to skim coat over and at least the roller naps I use for painting leave a much better finish. Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

    @@TheFunnyCarpenter actually very soon somewhere on his cardboard slider, he will get a buildup of paint that will eventually find it way on the floor. So your taping is a professional approach thats foolproof. Also bringing the tape from the floor about a 16th of and inch or less up the baseboard will never be seen and create a barrier so the paint wont seep under tape and make its way to the floor. Unless you can slide the taping under the baseboard as some baseboards are slightly raised above a hardwood floor if they were done right. Doing it this way, you have to tear tape into about 18 inch pieces at a time to place under baseboards, but its worth the extra time to keep paint from getting dried onto the floor from seepage.

    This has probably been said before, but if you put masking tape down roughly before installing the skirting / base boards, it's super quick and cuts back nicely after painting. With the tape running under the skirting it saves a lot of time.

    Control works great. For one is adding a half pint to a gallon if the paint is thick and you can use your gallon without thinning with water. Flowtrol will slow dry your paint when using outside when your surface is a little to warm. Latex paint only.

  • @AcidTechnoMan5000

    Another tip. I've got burned by this many times. Depending on the tape used, run a utility knife blade where the tape meets the baseboard top if it's on the wall. Will prevent paint from peeling off. Also, the frog tape is water activated I believe even though the package doesn't specify (people argue with me about this all the time.) When the tape is first put on, get a wet rag and run along the tape, which will help the tape adhere to the surface. Also, prior to putting the tape on (I think this was in the video) ensure all surfaces are clean, I like to get rubbing alcohol on a rag, wipe down the wall and the baseboard (wall where you will be taping) let dry, then install the tape, then run a wet rag over the tape. Even if the water on the rag/tape does nothing, it makes you feel better.

    Love those Silver Tips, well worth their weight in Gold. Purdy's are nice too. My old boss was so anal about baseboards and me teaching the teachers who would come paint during the summer with all the waves and repainting that I hated to do again; going over their work over and over and over. Especially Inside Work, imagine having to sand walls because they have roller marks because they did the work for the roller and pushed the paint out the sides. Painting is a Art interior and exterior. It is very rare that I use tape and using a leveling agent is the way to go even if you have been painting for years. It looks so much cleaner.

    Floetrol and Frog tape... two really great products I've used for years. Both are worth every penny. Frog tape is better than any of the other trim tapes, including 3M's blue. For patching dings in wood I think the best product is MH Ready Patch. Hardens like wood, does not shrink or crack, and sands out really well. You'll find it mostly at smaller hardware and paint stores, and Amazon does carry it.

    I bought floetrol because of this video. I was really glad I bought it, I've painted more rooms than I can count and man, this really helped the paint go on the wall WAY smoother. Thanks for the tips! I am listing my home soon and have a few dumb things to repair before we get pics taken. I have watched all your vids on repair on your channel. I even just regrouted my kitchen! Boom; My bedroom wall has chair rail on it, and my one wall is very wavy. In some places, the chair rail meets the wall and on other spots, the chair rail is almost 3/4" away from the wall!!! Omg I don't have any fancy nailers, air compressor, and my little baby stapler is no use for this application. Any suggestions on what to do when baseboard or chair rail has a significant gap like that without straight up repairing the wall (which I am not doing!) Lol

  • @TheFunnyCarpenter

    @TheFunnyCarpenter

    3 жыл бұрын

    Is there any way you can use an instant setting glue, like a 2P10 or even a glue and then clamp the rail back into place? Or depending on the profile if there is a decent flat spot you can try use a trim head screw to suck it back into the wall. Let me know how you make out!

  • @naturallymarisa

    @naturallymarisa

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm sure this comment is coming much too late, but you don't need a brad nailer. You can just use 3d or 4d finish nails and a hammer. Use a nail pusher to push the nail even farther in then fill it over with wood putty before repainting. I've been upgrading my baseboards this way and it honestly only takes about 5 minutes longer per room versus a nail gun.
