Non Mirror Image Combination Units Technique Sheet

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Combination units are great basic shapes used in numerous quilt blocks and patterns, but most construction methods result in a pair of mirror imaged units. But what if your design uses only identical units? You'd be stuck doing twice the work to get all the units you need!
However, with my new Non Mirror Combo Units Technique Sheet, I've come up with a process to construct your combination units so they all end up identical. This video will demonstrate the process from the technique sheet that creates non mirror image combination units. And just like all my other tools and techniques, you'll make your units slightly oversized so you can trim each unit down using your Tucker Trimmer tool for high precision piecework.

I was blessed to meet you in Houston 2 yrs ago and picked up 3 rulers and went back last year and got 4 more. I love how thorough you are in the instructions (im left handed) and have used your amazing rulers and love them and came across your videos and after watching a few picked up a few more rulers and some technic sheets. Thank you for the inspiration and the videos.

When I saw the new technique sheet, I just had to see the video. Deb, I have been using this exact same technique for a few years now to make these combination units. I am so glad to see that you also you were thinking along the same lines! Lol I also LOVE the Tucker Trimmer. I always use that tool more than any ruler I have. I did try to use it to trim a basic four patch once. That is the only time I couldn't use it. Lol. Thanks for the great tutorials. I love watching them.

I have this tool - it has been well used, but this technique is new to me for non mirrored pieces. Now I understand how it works - amazing. Thank you - wish I had watched this sooner, but better late than never. :D

What is the purpose of "crossing over" to other side when stitching?

Rosie B it’s to eliminate mirror image blocks- so you have the same colors in the same place in each of the units. It’s actually the whole purpose of this video.

I am not sure it has a name. It is done with a partial seam around the center square. I have a tips and tricks called Partial Seams and it shows you how to do this. We also have a pattern that is called Spinning Pinwheels that uses this block but isn't the quilt in the background. deb-tuckers-studio-180-design.myshopify.com/products/spinning-pinwheels?_pos=1&_sid=bf27cdd3a&_ss=r

Hi Marthese, we did create a pattern that uses this block it is called Spinning Pinwheels. It has blocks that spin in both directions. You can see the pattern here: deb-tuckers-studio-180-design.myshopify.com/products/spinning-pinwheels?_pos=1&_sid=c9b107722&_ss=r

This is a variation of the Spinning Pinwheels Pattern. We used the Non Mirror Combo Units technique sheet to make all the units the same and then just set them on point with setting triangles. So there isn't a specific Pattern for this one but Spinning Pinwheels gets you close.
