This song got inspired of the film Black Swan. And the quote "A dancer dies twice... once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful."

  • @Lungette1
    @Lungette12 ай бұрын

The song is a reference to the quote by Martha Graham “A dancer dies twice. First when they stop dancing and this death is the more painful of the two”. Hence the line “Maybe this is how I die my first death” maybe he will stop rapping/singing/dancing and suffer the same pain. If the music doesn’t move him anymore. Beautiful song. The shadows are a heavy theme for this album. ON also has a lot of mention of shadows and these songs are from the same album. The album looks at the Persona, Ego and Shadow which were studied by Carl Jung. 😄

Good interpretation of the song. Yep they were experiencing burn out/losing passion. They may not talk about their personal lives or what goes on behind the scenes often, but if you want to know what they are feeling then they will usually write a song instead. Their songs 99% of the time will tell you their story. These are probably the most creative artist and song writers I have ever seen. And the one you said "hes cool isn't he" why yes he is lol. @@soniap1217 The song is saying what if they lost their passion BUT we know from their own mouths that they did experience burnout and considered quitting. Don't let the time frame of the song releasing confuse you on when EXACTLY they wrote this song. MOTS Persona and MOTS7 were supposed to be released differently based on the hints they gave us using Jung's theories, so we don't have a timeline specifically of when Black Swan was written. So it definitely could have been in 2018-19 when they were having their burnout and reconciled to continue. So she isn't wrong and neither are you.

I think a quick "sample" of their diversity is to watch their 2021 Festa where it is a simple set where they sing/rap parts of songs from several different albums spanning their time from 2013 until that present time - that sampling really shows how diverse their body of art is and is just an incredibly easy listen.

through their discography BTS has showed us that recognizing our own shadows is part of learning to love ourselves. In "ON" there's a line "gotta go insane to stay sane" in my opinion this means that most people don't want to explore their shadows (weakness, demons, flaws, trauma, etc) aka their "insane" side but BTS recognize that the only way to achieve self-love (sane/healthy mind) it is empirical to face/accept/analyze those shadows and learn and grow from it.

ON and Black Swan are off the same album, Map of the Soul: 7, which is part of the Map of the Soul album series based on Jungian psychology. There are many songs in the series addressing themes of identity, persona, ego, shadows and fears, vulnerabilities, their thoughts and feelings about themselves and their relationships with their art and with people they care about, including ARMY. This song is indeed about their fear of falling out of love with their art, because they were suffering incredible burnout at this point after working at a breakneck pace for 10 years without a break (counting trainee time.) They have always been very raw, courageous and honest in their art. I have seen dancers and musicians cry reacting to this MV because it is such a universal fear and so rarely addressed so openly in music. Things to note in this MV ~ The shadows represent their fears, looming large and out of their control initially, and slowly being reintegrated into themselves as they go from white outfits with a touch of black under a harsh spotlight, to all black silhouettes at the end, as they become the black swans, the shadows, themselves. Notice Jin's reflections in the mirrors also do not move with him when he turns. Like the shadows with the others, they are similarly not under his control. Also he is considered the "face" of BTS, the "visual" as he is considered to have the perfect looks by a Korean Idol standard, whereas the others very much do not meet that standard (Yes really. They were called "The Ugly Idol Group" when they first started.) So him studying his face in the mirrors is also not without meaning. This is more commentary on fears and public image not being entirely under their control. A black swan as a metaphor is a sudden and unexpected life changing event with dire consequences. Black Swan the film is about a dancer driven mad by the pressures of her career. Both meanings apply here. Notice how they begin looking small and vulnerable on stage, dancing barefoot with a large balance of black space above them as if at the bottom of a black ocean. This is echoed in later lyrics about being stuck on the ocean floor, so in the dark and under pressure. The corsets on two of the members also reflect this theme of constriction. The setting of an ornate and beautiful but shadowed and empty theater is not without meaning also. The lyrics reference a quote by dancer Martha Graham about how, when a dancer (artist) can no longer pursue their art, it is like a death. "A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." Notice how the production on the music has the vocals sounding compressed and almost like they are underwater, and there is a driving beat throughout, like a heartbeat booming in their ears in fear, which they also reference in the the lyrics. Notice how the choreography is moves showing desperation, despair, choking, feet dragging, as well as swan moves. Their choreography is always storytelling performance art. BTS are a total performance art collective package. Seven genius and world-class artists, singers, songwriters, producers, composers, dancers, and musicians. Their music reflects their themes in all ways possible, musical production details, lyrics, choreography, wardrobe, and MV visual storytelling. Their songs are most often very layered with a surface universal meaning, a deeper personal meaning to their own lives and experiences, and sometimes another layer of storytelling related to the Bangtan Universe (BU) which is a supernatural mystery storyline that runs through their work with clues revealed in lyrics, MVs, short films album notes, webtoons, books, a mobile game and more multi-media. All their albums are concept albums with tracks in a storytelling order, and many are linked in sets or series of albums. BTS has 20 albums as a group, 12 albums as solo artists, and many other singles, collabs, OSTs, and covers, for a discography many hundreds of songs deep.

Martha Graham: "A dancer dies twice - once when he stops dancing, and his first death is the most painful." The meaning is that if they lose their passion for music it will be like a painful death. Big Hit has always given them the freedom to make their music, but in general the music industry can become oppressive and suffocate the artist. The video for “Black Swan”, a single from the album “Map of the Soul: 7”, by BTS, was released in March 2020 and was very successful. The most interesting thing is that all seven members worked on the song, giving their artistic and personal touches. Producer Pdogg spoke about this in a recent interview with Fast Company. He has been a partner of the group since the beginning of his career. I created the beat and the members, the songwriters and the other in-house producers worked from that beat and created the melody. We put these things together as they went along. The characteristic of BTS is that their own stories are contained in the music”, he highlighted.

BTS does unit songs also. You will hear the terms "Vocal Line" or "Rap Line". One song that goes along with this theme and time is by the Rap Line. It is a hard rap song with an emotional meaning. It is called Outro Tear (as in crying). It was written by SUGA when the group was contemplating breaking up. When the rest of the group heard the song, they said they all cried and decided to work things out and stay together. If you watch it just keep in mind that they use both forms of the word, Tear (as in crying) and Tear (as in ripping apart). There is no MV for it but there are several live performances just make sure you choose one that has the English Subtitles.

The Persona is the public face, the Shadow is the darker part that we don't normally want the world to see, and the Ego is the part that protects ourselves from the shadow. BTS takes us through their journey of self discovery in these two albums. The Jungian Society is a big fan of BTS. One of their members even dedicated a book to BTS!

It is a set of three books….MAP OF THE SOUL PERSONA. (our many faces, ) MAP OF THE SOUL SHADOW (our hidden faces ) and MAP OF THE SOUL EGO ..(l am. ) It is written by Murray Stein, he explains BTS’s lyrics and meaning in relation to Jungian Psychology, throughout the books and had dedicated all three to BTS and ARMY fans. We ARMY are always learning all types of things and ways of thinking due to all BTS members (mainly RM and Suga) we have become happier and healthier in our lives , and relationships with others. Through the BTS journey we have learnt to never give up and never give in. RM has a song Persona, Suga has a song Shadow and J Hope has a song Ego, but all of their music is influenced by the message they are sending out. That love is the most important thing and that starts with loving yourself first. It sounds too simplistic and almost corny but it is the very thing everyone needs in their life.

I always felt this was the beginning of the end for them as a group. They'd been working and living and performing and writing music together for a decade, and it wasn't that they lost their passion for music, I think they were going in different directions musically. Yearning to write and perform their own music and eventually not be part of a group anymore. That's how I see this song.

Great reaction! I love this song so much! This album was like a look into their inner selves and their stories, so a lot of them were personal, and not all in a sad way. Another artistic and deep one is Fake Love. Also, I HIGHLY recommend you react to A Guide to BTS Members: The Bangtan 7 by Taylor Mari! It's a long video, but we ARMY love longer videos so you don't have to worry about that, and it's a really good introduction to the guys, what they're like, what they went through, and what they stand for as a band. Borahae! 💜

Your interpretation is right. Black swan is from the album map of the soul 7 which is based on Jungian psychology. They use 3 concepts to explore their identities, the persona, shadow and ego. The persona being the social mask, the shadow is the hidden fears or repressed parts of yourself and the EGO is the idea of the self. This is how the album is kind of structured: Persona (song by rm) 😢 boy with luv Shadow (song by Suga) black swan ON, the one you reacted to, EGO (song by jhope) So in a song about the shadow, of course they are going to talk about their collective burnout they experienced during that time. As a musician your biggest fear that will haunt you will be what if i lost my passion for this... BTS always write about themselves or stuff they hear about. If you really want to understand bts on another level you gotta check out at least one of these albums.. Map of the soul 7 2020 Love yourself answer 2018 Wings 2016 BE 2020

BTS has dabbled in different genres, they are very versatile, although their debut was as a hip hop idol group; what I love about it is that even within the same genre they will not sound the same as the other, you always find interesting changes, fusions with more genres, etc., that make it attractive. In addition to the fact that their songs usually have messages such as loving oneself, they talk about mental health, they are based on their own thoughts or experiences, on ideas they have, on philosophy, psychology, on what they see in their environment, there is even social criticism (from their first song), etc. That's part of the appeal of the group, the other part is themselves with their very different personalities but at the same time they complement each other and have formed a great family (they consider themselves that way), they are guys who even with the success and fame achieved they remain simple and down to earth. In addition, years ago they decided that they should not hide things from ARMY, so they have let the part of the problems show, tiredness even exhaustion, their feelings, etc. That's why in the fandom you find from small children to people over 80 years old; by the way of very different musical tastes (there are metalheads). Mic Drop is a song written for their haters (they have several). O.N. is part of the same album as Black swan, which is Map of the Soul: 7 which is based on Carl Jung's psychological theory. Black Swan is based on a comment by the dancer Martha Graham: “A dancer dies twice, once when he stops dancing, and this first death is the most painful”; they have also commented that they were very exhausted physically and mentally, they were worried that it would lead them to stop feeling passion for music (which is something that the 7 have in excess). Even when they released that album they contemplated completing the already announced tour and taking a break, so they would take the opportunity to do their military service which in Korea is from a year and a half to 2 years, but the pandemic started and everything changed. During that period they generated a lot of content for ARMY, and they kept us happy. Currently they are all in the military service, in June the first one will come out and months later another one, and already in June 2025 the other 5. That does not mean that we have constantly had new content because they left a lot of things prepared, in addition they all made their official debut as soloists before enlisting so in addition to the music of BTS there are soloists where everyone has shown their individual sound and taste.

This song was a pre album release for the album called "7" in 2020. The album release song was "ON". This song was about the shadow, what it would feel like to lose the love for music. This song was written on the heals of them deciding to go into the military, the song "ON' as well. This was to be their swan song (no pun intended), they were going to release this album in early 2020 then spend the rest of 2020 doing a World Tour that the Korean and American market already had sold out. They would go to the 2020/21 award shows. Then they would start going into the military spring of 2021. That was their timeline, so that is why you hear much angst and strength in both this song and "ON". They felt conflicted but stalwart about what they were going to do. Then covid hit. Their World Tour was cancelled, their military enlistments were put on hold, even though the songs got an official live play it was online and all of BTS felt that the energy for these songs hit different because there was not an audience to listen to these songs. I would agree.

I discovered BTS by accident and curiosity got me to listen to more, Captions on, from there I was lost. They are fantastic musicians, they can sing, rap & dance, they often write their own lyrics and are often involved in the production. Their lyrics, often focus on personal and social commentary, touch on the themes of mental health, troubles of school-age youth and coming of age, loss, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism. Their work also often references literature and psychological concepts and includes an alternative universe storyline. "BTS," actually stands for the words, "Bangtan Sonyeondan," which translates to mean "Bulletproof Boy Scouts." 'Bangtan’ means to be resistant to bullets, so it means to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets, to preserve the values and ideal of today’s adolescents," They started out as a HipHop group in 2013, (they have 3 rappers, 2 of which were from the Korean underground rap scene & 4 Vocalists) but actually cover so many genres of music in addition to HipHop, invluding Pop, EDM, Rap, RnB, Rock, Urban, Trap, Ballads... they say not everyone will like all BTS songs, but there is a BTS song for everyone. For anyone willing to find out more I recommend taking a look at what they have to offer and suggest the following: Butter (All English) Dope Fire Danger DNA Idol Blood Sweat and Tears Fake Love Not Today Save Me Truth Untold Spring Day (which has spent 5 consecutive years in Goan's Digital Chart's) Your Eyes Tell The Cyphers if you like rap Outra Tear Born Singer Mikrokosmos Then solo works: Jungkook - Euphoria, My Time, Seven V - Singularity, Stigma (live version), Sweet Night (the first and only song in history to top 119 countries on the worldwide iTunes chart), Love Me Again, Rainy Days Suga's alter ego Agust D - Daewitcha, Agust D, The Last, Shadow, Haegeum, Amygdala RM - Persona, Joke J-Hope - Boy Meets Evil, More, Arson Jin - Epiphany, Abyss Jimin - Serendipity, Filter, Crazy

Black Swan and On is part of the Map of the Soul: 7 album which is inspired by Carl Jung psychological theory of the Persona, Shadow and Ego. This is one of the songs that talk about the shadow aspect of it. Their fear of losing their passion for music. Included also here in this album are the songs by the rapline, Intro: Persona by RM, Interlude: Shadow by SUGA and Outro: Ego by J-hope, hope you check them out as well. btw, i love your attention to details, very seldom i see reactors noticing the reflection of Jin in the mirrors didn’t move when he turned, the reflections are all looking at him. and also you being able to pick out the lyrics while also being focused on the vid and music. most struggle with it.. maybe because you react to anime that you are so accustomed to it.. love it! hope you react to more BTS.

4:42 this song is on the album "map of the soul:7" released in 2020, this album wasn't supposed to exist. In 2019 they released their album "map of the soul: persona" they had initially planned to make this a trilogy by following it up with "map of the soul: shadow" and then "map of the soul: ego" but they didn't get enough time to release two more albums so they combined all three albums and made it a compilation album "map of the soul:7". Black swan and On are the main singles of this album, throughout the album you'll find references to persona, shadow and ego

As BTS fan from day one, I believe their rise to fame is all about their talent and lyrical genius. Unlike many of today's K-Pop groups, BTS didn't rely on looks to draw in fans; they focused on the art. That's why I'm convinced we'll never see another K-Pop group like them unless a new one comes along with a unique vibe. Honestly, I think K-Pop will fade after the third-gen groups, especially BTS. It's sad, but K-Pop just isn't as special as it used to be. Now, you get groups with weak vocals and childish lyrics, like Shushu Mimi, Fifi Fufu nono ... .Great music thrives on powerful words and melodies, not just flashy looks and outfits.

I’m a little late catching this, but just wanted to comment that part of what makes BTS is they have thèmes throughout albums and a lot of songs connect and interconnect. This song actually falls in the middle of an album, “Map of the Soul:7” where they follow the concept of Carl Jung’s theory of the mind’s Persona, Shadow, and Ego. This song is part of the shadow. While this song is brutally honest and can seem quite depressing, it’s only a part of the story. It’s one of BTS greatest album’s honestly! They talk about the good, the bad, and then the core of who they are. “On” is actually the finale to the album. A triumphant anthem to bring they pain on because they have faith in themselves and will always choose to stay fighting

Pleaseeeee keep reacting to BTS. I am genuinelly impressed with your breakdowns. Very little reactors pay attention to the lyrics and manage to break them down the way you do. And there is a reason for BTS to have such a massive following. They are unique and if I may add they surpassed kpop as genre a long time ago. I need you to know that they are heavily involved into the songwriting and producing of their songs. Also they are just good people which is something you rarely get in the music industry. They are currently serving in the military btw. They also have solo projects and its just so much content. They have been a group for 10 years so - a lot to check out. Their songs are special and they cover a lot of different topics - self love, social topics, struggles etc. Also their live performances are out of this world. They sing live and prove time and time again how talented they are!

I genuinely think you should watch these next, since you pointed out the theme of this video so accurately. Intro: Persona, a solo by the leader and rapper RM. Interlude: Shadow, solo by rapper Suga; and then Outro: Ego, solo by dance leader and rapper j-hope. the lyrics are incredibly introspective and full of depth about the duality of their personas and lives as idols. They’re songs that really make you think and feel. As for full group songs; I really recommend Idol, Fire, Run BTS, Fake Love, Not Today. Pretty much every title track they’ve released. They also do subunit songs, like all the singers will do a song. Or just the rappers. Or a mix of some of both. Their lyrics can range from simple to so complex that you need to watch an explanation video 😂. I truly hope you continue on with this journey, as it is probably one of my true delights to watch someone discover BTS and realize that they are so much more than what people expect. If you have the time as well, and if you’re interested in knowing more about how the group formed, their backstory and their growth to what they are today, I really recommend A Guide to BTS: The Bangtan 7, by Taylor Mari. It’s a long video and I’d really love to see you react to it. You might have to pause to read, it’s not audibly narrated, but it tells you mostly everything you need to know about each member. Their ages, full names, personalities, positions in the group -such as leader, rappers, vocalists, producers, etc. They produce and write their own songs. We don’t mind long reaction videos. It’s truly enjoyable to watch you take in the information. Thank you so much for giving our guys a chance. They’ve worked so hard for the past 10 years and deserve all the recognition possible. 💜💜💜💜 and I can tell you that you’ll always be surprised by how different their songs sound. They’re amazingly versatile and can pull off a very wide range of genres. They are a group that has meticulously honed their skills and have unbreakable passion for their craft. It genuinely shows. It’s why so many have become fans. This kind of sincerity, actual palpable sincerity, is hard to find. We really resonate with them as people. We can’t wait for them all to be discharged from their military service, decompress, and then come back stronger than ever. 💜💜💜💜💜💜
