    See? It’s really all about the playing. Everything he plays sounds amazing regardless of the patch. He plays TO the sound, it inspires what he plays. Simeon could turn the power off on the MIDI controller and still sound better than half of us.

    Brilliant demo and amazing playing. I just bought NOIRE a couple days ago as NI is having an awesome sale right now. I'm a bit of a purist with my classical training and find I often get tired of bells and whistles and just return to the basic piano sound. However, this is different. It has a great pure replication of a real piano. However, authenticity of the sounds and the brilliant implementation of all the real mechanical sounds sounds and variables is amazing. I got lost in the Particle engine very quickly. So exciting to play and create with this.

  • @CraigAddy

    I'm a big fan of Nils Frahm's unique voice in the world of piano and sounds. Are you familiar with him? If not, he frequently produces recordings that amplify and emphasise the mechanical sounds of the piano. I have mixed feelings about it but it is definitely unique. Like you, when I played with the mechanical and pedal sounds in Noire, I brought the levels down from the defaults. The default levels sound very much in keeping of Frahm's own sensibilities.

We are fishing for response all the time we play any Instrument. This one was designed by our Berlin based Composer Nils Frahm. Nils Frahm, as an Artist, was able to create this Sounds with those great response. Its so great to see, how you acting and what the response did with you ... maybe at this beautiful Sunday Morning. It is such an honor to hear from you. NOIRE was one of the first pianos I extensively have reviewed on the channel and it has set me on a joyful course of exploration which I am so grateful for. NOIRE to me was sort of a genesis if you will of breaking ground for how developers approached sampling and scripting their virtual pianos and the introduction of the Particles Engine was literally a game changer in the truest sense of the word as it allowed you to take the piano into uncharted and exciting places. My best to you, I can't wait for the next virtual piano revolution. Joyfully yours!

    I think NOIRE would be fine playing classical but it might not have everything a pure classical player might be looking for (una corda, soft pedal samples, etc.). I do find that it does have a very warm and emotional quality to it, especially using the Felt variant of the library. Thanks so much for watching , and your kind words. Here is looking forward to a new year full of hope and new possibilities. All the best.

    Not sure why that is. There are so many controls for tone and EQ that can affect this. You might try loading another instrument and see if it too sounds muddy and that could point to something else possible EQ if your audio interface is connected to an outboard mixer.

    Well, I always make it a point not to use any additional processing on the library I'm reviewing as to give you the most true to an out of the box sound to judge what the instrument sounds like. A couple of factors with NOIRE is, first of all, getting the right velocity response dialed in. Velocity curves are I think one of the single most important things to get right as it affects how the sample layers and dynamics play out. So click on the FIRST ICON (looks like a piano tuner's wrench), this will take you to SETTINGS. Now under the far RIGHT look under SETTINGS and you should see VELOCITY. From there try the various drop-down choices and see how they respond to your playing. Next thing to check os on the initial MAIN interface, play with adjusting the COLOR and DYNAMIC controls, these shape tone and some additional response elements. Also depending on the controller you are using there might be some velocity curves and scaling options there so I would definitely check those out as well. Let me know how it goes.

    NOIRE was the first instrument to feature the Particles engine that was introduced as a new feature in KONTAKT 6. I would not say this is cheating, but rather a form of sound design, as it takes the initial sound of the instrument and takes it into new and beautiful places. Heavyocity released ASCEND (Grand Piano), and most recently AVANT (Rhodes), that also take advantage of a particles engine. Thanks so much for watching. Joyfully!🎹

    Thanks for watching. Yes, I am using a new open source MIDI drawbar controller from GMLabs; the D9-X. I actually received the very first assembled prototype from them which was exciting and challenged me to see the controller not just for use in tone wheel organ simulations. I have the drawbars mapped to some of the tonal co trolls of NOIRE which open up some really interesting possibilities. I also found that the drawbars felt very natural when using them in this way. • @PraiseTracks

    @PraiseTracks

    Pure and Felt are two separate instruments within NOIRE so there is not a way to easily switch between them like you can change the treatments out in Una Corda. Initially I mapped the four controls along the bottom of the main NOIRE interface. You can map other controls in the additional edit pages. You can see me do this somewhere near the beginning of the video.

    One idea that might work is to have two instances of NOIRE (1Pure, 1Felt), assign them to the same MIDI channel BUT map the Volume control in such a way that one of them would be inverted. This would allow you to sort of cross fade between the two. I might try this and if so post a short follow up vid. 🤓

  • @PraiseTracks

    Ralph, I can tell you that you have started me on a very interesting journey indeed. So this is what I just tried and it's fascinating; So I loaded up two instances of NOIRE (1 Felt and 1Pure) and it brings an entirely new dimension to this instrument. I also assigned each volume control to a separate drawbar so you can blend them together. I definitely will do a short demo of this because it opens up some really beautiful possibilities. For instance you can engage the Particles Engine on just one instance and just have the particles play in the PURE piano and play freely with FELT without the Particles Engine affecting anything there. That is why I am so glad they included two entirely different pianos and not one version with a convolution effect to get the different characters. These are two discretely sampled pianos which adds so much to their quality and value. Thanks again for your comments as our individual experiences can combine and compliment each other with the result of opening new doors of creative opportunity.

  • @PraiseTracks

    There are a few ways you can do this depending on the type of digital piano you have. Newer digital pianos will have some sort of USB to Computer connection to take care of sending the notes you play into the software. It creates a MIDI port. You might also see some unisual jacks in the rear of the keyboard having 5 pins, these are also MIDI connectors that would connect to an external audio/MIDI interface on your computer. To get the best performance you would want an external audio interface that would connect to your monitor speakers. There might be a way to connect the audio interface to your digital piano’s external input but it depends. I hope that helps get you started in the right direction. Thanks for watching.

    Oh yes, I really enjoyed using my SL-880 for many years. It does have a lot of miles on it here in my workstation area for sure. Studiologic uses a FATAR action which implements sort of a hammer action that gives you the feel of the mechanics of a piano keyboard. It is graded in weight from heavy at the bottom and progressively lighter as you go to the upper registers. You would not go wrong with one of the newer weighted Studiologic controllers as I am sure they have kept refining their action and control features. I have to say that some of the newer Roland Digital pianos have a fantastic action and feel to the point of creating sort of a faux ivory keytop that just gives you the sense of sitting behind a concert grand. It also has a physical hammer action and graded keyboard and it is wonderful to play. Thanks so much for watching and please let me know if I can ever be of assistance in the future?

    First off, thanks so much for watching and so glad you enjoyed the video. NOIRE is a gem of a piano library with so much heart. If you check out the video where I compare the Garritan CFX to NOIRE (which is also based on a CFX) you can see I was actually able to get quite the dynamic range out of it which surprised me a bit. It is all in the way you dial it in using the various controls for color, velocity response (that is a BIG one to get right) and dynamic range, there is a lot of places NOIRE can go. The feel is really achieved by knowing your individual keyboard velocity response curve and matching it up well with the corresponding setting in NOIRE. NOIRE gives you some control over this through specific presets and you should definitely check your user manual for how your keyboard velocity curve is set. Please let me know if you have any additional questions and I will do my best to assist.

    I have heard a lot of positive thoughts about Grandeur, I have not tried it myself...yet ;^) I think you will tell a difference between your digital piano and the sample libraries; the reason is that while hardware pianos are great and have a lot of dynamic use, you will be able to have a lot more in terms of quality and flexibility. The downside is being tethered to a computer or laptop and all the things that accompany that. It is about finding your"voice" for the particular project or playing situation and each piano library like its namesake piano from which is was recorded have their own unique qualities. That's why it is exciting to have all of these options to find exactly the colors that will complete your next masterpiece.

I just like playing jazz, classical, pop songs, and don't actually need options for experimental or unique sounds that Noire is good at. I heard Keyscape has neutral sounding so it was my go-to, but I also heard we can get similar sounds within Noire by tweaking a little bit. If so, I think Noire is a better choice for me, because it's cheaper but has deeper sounds. What do you think?

  • @PraiseTracks

    Unfortunately, I do not own Keyscape, it is definitely a library I would love to experience. So right off the bat NOIRE is more affordable and I think you could do much of what you are looking for with the library. The Felt option gives you another color to play with as well which is an added bonus. I would say NOIRE has a nice balance in the mic positions they chose along with the sound of the stage they recorded it in, it is not that huge reverberant sound that is impossible to separate from the piano tone. When you look at NOIRE you must take into account the reason and persons involved in its creation as that will give you more clues into the underlying personality of the library. To me it is like a musical piece of art. Check out my other NOIRE vids as well as they might help you hear more examples. Maybe one day I can give you some insight on Keyscape 🤓 Thanks so much for watching. All the best.

    Hello my friend, I am so glad you are discovering the beauty that is NOIRE. As keyboard controllers go, the SL88 Studio has the weighted plastic action like my older SL-880 used in the video. The Komplete Kontrol S88 MK2 has the slightly heavier wooden action that feels closer to a piano action. The actions are manufactured by Fatar, who is also the parent company for Studiologic. The newer Studiologic SL88 Grand that I am using now is wonderful to play. The velocity range is so dynamic and playable, and that action is also in the Komplete Kontrol S88. The Komplete controllers are slightly more expensive due to the additional options built in to have detailed control over Native Instruments titles, like Kontakt that integrate with it. You can save and go with the SL88 Grand which for me has been a great experience. I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any additional questions and I will do my best to respond. I found that nearly impossible to replicate and it's not entirely me because I worked as a pro (classical) pianist so my technique, control and rhythm is spot on. Theirs seems to add a natural and clear percussion, especially as the score has accented offbeats which reverberates perfectly on the demo. However my settings which are the same are not replicating their video. They never mentioned sustain/sostenuto either. I didn't bother trying a second instance of Noire as the first ain't cutting it. I would be glad to. First of all, I am using a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 as my audio and MIDI interface, along with Cakewalk by BandLab which has recently become available as a full featured DAW application. So everything is being hosted inside of Cakewalk (virtual instruments, microphone, etc.). All of this is being sent to the Focusrite Audio interface so that the audio can be heard by the speakers along with being able to pass the audio to my video and screen capture application which is the freely available OBS Studio. The Focusrite provides a "loopback" output that is a virtual audio router that OBS sees and uses to record and stream audio to recordings or to the outside world during livestreams. For my personal monitoring of the audio during recording, I use headphones or earbuds in order to isolate the sound. if I were to have used the actual monitor speakers, I would experience a lot of nasty feedback as the microphone would have been picking up everything coming from the speakers and running it back to the audio input, that is the reason to turn off those monitor speakers and only use headphones. At the time of this video my SL-880 Keyboard Controller was connected to the MIDI in and Out of the Scarlett 4i4 as well in order for me to be able to play NOIRE hosted inside of Cakewalk. I hope that gives you a little more info. Joyfully!🎹

The one I have made (only one) had me just doing subtitles because I didn't want to interfere with the audio at all. But that was a very different kind of video. And moreover, considering that there are a great many videos on every subject imaginable, doing one that's not utterly meta. I've been resisting doing a few on some VI's and setups because I have been so irritated by how un-real-world many are and I want to avoid doing sort of response videos to those. OK, I re-watched the interview video again and it reminded me why I really enjoy NOIRE as you hear the heart of Nils as he describes his process. I found the key to all of the mics pictured in the promos; Nils mentions that this was part of the initial testing experiments to get an idea of what the final recording situation might be. So they started with all of those crazy looking mic pairs and such and through the process of elimination settled on Neuman, coles, etc.. I also found it interesting that the Neumans were positioned at the height of Nils' ears so you do get that "player" perspective which I never really paid much attention to earlier. On some of the longer video shots, you also see a pair of smaller condensers to provide the "room' perspective but I think that the finished product is extraordinary and it is fascinating to be able to see some of what goes into producing these amazing instruments. Papa, when you start down the rabbit hole of Kontakt libraries things can be a little challenging at first. You are going to find the need for an external USB audio device, which are very reasonable. The reason for the interface is to provide the lowest latency possible so you can enjoy playing the library. On board sound cards are not typically able to handle demanding tasks that this requires. Also storage speed and system memory might be an issue as you need something that can handle playing the samples back from disk and memory efficiently. Don’t let this discourage you but rather inspire you to what the possibilities await once you pass through that door. There is a learning curve to get started but there are many here who can help. • @PraiseTracks

    @PraiseTracks

    4 жыл бұрын

    Well there is not an associated "release" setting that could extend the notes in NOIRE other than trying to emulate it with a long reverb.. So not having a sustain pedal for a piano library is like not having a bow for a violin. The sustain pedal does not have to be fancy, I actually have a couple of controllers and on one of them I just have a very simple switch pedal assigned to sustain. If your controller does not have a plug for a switch pedal you might could assign a button on the controller to MIDI CC 64 (hold/sustain), but that would mean having to take one hand off the keyboard to trigger it which is not optimal.
